Retainer Brite is one tablet option whose manufacturer instructions specifically list aligners and night guards, but it contains persulfates that can cause allergic reactions.
How the cleaning options compare
| Option | Appliance guidance | Time and water | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brush and rinse | AAO guidance for retainers; check your appliance maker’s directions. | Rinse with cool or lukewarm water; brush gently each day with a dedicated soft toothbrush and mild soap. | No cleaner tablet is needed. Rinse away soap, then air-dry in a ventilated case. Avoid abrasive toothpaste unless the maker specifically recommends it. |
| Retainer Brite tablet soak | Manufacturer instructions list retainers, aligners, nightguards, sports mouthguards and other dental appliances. | Dissolve one tablet in enough warm, not hot, water to cover the appliance; soak for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. | Contains persulfates, a known allergen. Use only if the appliance instructions permit it; tablets are consumables. |
| Ultrasonic cleaner | The AAO mentions ultrasonic retainer cleaners as an option; the guidance does not establish compatibility for every appliance or recommend a specific model. | Follow the cleaner and appliance manufacturers’ instructions; time and water-temperature guidance depend on the device. | Check appliance compatibility before use. No model or comparative performance result is established here. |
Start with gentle daily cleaning
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) advises rinsing a retainer with lukewarm water when you remove it and brushing it daily with a dedicated toothbrush and dish soap. Its FAQ recommends cool water, gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush and mild soap, and air-drying in a ventilated case. Follow the directions for your specific aligner or night guard if they differ.

Heat and harsh cleaners can damage some appliances. Avoid hot or boiling water, bleach, harsh chemicals and abrasive toothpaste unless the appliance maker specifically directs otherwise. The AAO also describes a weekly tablet or cleaning-solution soak of 10–20 minutes, but that general retainer guidance is not proof that every product suits every night guard.

When a tablet soak makes sense
Retainer Brite
Retainer Brite is a directly relevant tablet option because its May 2021 manufacturer instructions name aligners and nightguards, as well as retainers and other oral appliances. Use one tablet in enough warm—not hot—water to cover the appliance, soak for 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Check the appliance’s own instructions first; the product’s broad list does not guarantee compatibility with every material or model.
The instructions warn that Retainer Brite contains persulfates, which can cause an allergic reaction. Do not use it if you have a known sensitivity to persulfates; stop and seek appropriate advice if you develop a reaction. The manufacturer also reports that the product kills 99% of listed common odor-causing bacteria, citing independent 2016 U.S. laboratory testing under ASTM E2315-03, with data on file. That is a manufacturer-reported test result, not a comparison with other cleaners or evidence of a clinical benefit.

Invisalign Cleaning System crystals
For Vivera retainers, Invisalign Australia says to brush gently with a regular or denture toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste, then rinse thoroughly. It also says Invisalign Cleaning System crystals may be used for aligners and retainers as a 15-minute soak. This is brand-specific guidance; it does not establish that the crystals are suitable for other brands or for night guards.

- 【Ultrasonic Cleaning】Utilizing 45,000Hz high-frequency ultrasonic technology, the retainer cleaner generates millions of micron-scale cleaning bubbles per second, penetrating deep into the tiniest gaps to remove 99.99% of stubborn stains. High-frequency vibration ensures efficient cleaning while being gentle and harmless to the dental appliances. Ideal for dental appliances (retainers, dentures, aligner, mouth guards, night guards, toothbrushes) and even jewelry & accessories.
- 【UV Deep Cleaning】 The retainer cleaner has 4 UV Lamps for 360° deep cleaning. UV Lamps can eliminate odors, and the cleaning degree is 3 times that of a toothbrush. When the lid is opened, the UV Lamps will automatically turn off to protect your family's eyes and skin from harm.
- 【4 Cleaning Modes】Depending on your dental appliances, you can choose the ultrasonic + UV Lamps fast cleaning mode or deep cleaning mode, or you can choose only ultrasonic cleaning or UV Lamps. You can also enhance the cleaning effect by using cleaning or mouthwash together.
- 【Double Hole Design & Low Noise】The top cover of the retainer cleaner has 2 holes, which can not only clean toothbrushes and makeup brushes, but also effectively dissipate heat and ventilation, and increase the life of the retainer cleaner. The operating noise of the retainer cleaner is less than 40 Hz, bringing you a quiet cleaning experience.
- 【Portable & Large Capacity】The retainer cleaner is very lightweight and portable. You can use it at home and in the office, or take it with you when traveling. The 200ML large capacity is suitable for most dental appliances, and it can even clean both upper and lower false teeth simultaneously.
Invisalign Australia’s Vivera guidance sets out these care options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are ultrasonic retainer cleaners worth considering?
An ultrasonic retainer cleaner is an optional category the AAO mentions, not a one-size-fits-all recommendation. The available guidance does not identify a best model or establish that every aligner or night guard can go in every ultrasonic device. Before buying or using one, check both the appliance maker’s instructions and the cleaner’s compatibility guidance. No head-to-head test establishes that an ultrasonic cleaner cleans better than brushing or a tablet soak.

The ADA says products in its removable dental appliance cleanser category were found safe and effective for cleaning removable dental appliances. That category statement does not mean a particular product has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance; check the product’s own status rather than inferring it from the category.

Should you wear a night guard and retainer together?
Do not layer separate appliances unless your orthodontist advises you to. The AAO says wearing both can alter your bite and is rarely recommended. Ask your orthodontist which device to wear; some patients may have a custom hard-acrylic retainer designed to protect against grinding.
