Play Resident Evil 4 next if you want to continue in story chronology. Capcom places Code: Veronica in December 1998 and Resident Evil 4 in autumn 2004, making it the clearest next stop among these games. From there, play Resident Evil 5 and then Resident Evil 6; fit Resident Evil Revelations between 4 and 5 if you want the timeline in closer order. This is a chronology-based route, not a ranking of game quality.

Choose a route based on what you want next
For the simplest next step: Resident Evil 4
Start here if your question is simply, “What Resident Evil game should I play after Code: Veronica?” The official timeline places it next among the listed choices, and Capcom’s summary gives you a clear new setup: Leon is sent to Europe to rescue the president’s daughter. You do not need to insert another game to keep the dates in order.
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.
- Reimagined Story – Resident Evil 4 dials up the original release’s key feelings of loneliness and the fear of enemies blinded by zealotry, while providing more nuanced depictions of the character motivations and relationships that defined the 2005 survival horror icon.
For closer chronological order: add Revelations
After Resident Evil 4, play Resident Evil Revelations before Resident Evil 5 if you want to follow the chronology more closely. Capcom dates Revelations to 2005, between the autumn 2004 events of Resident Evil 4 and the March 2009 events of Resident Evil 5. The timeline placement makes it a chronological side path; it does not make it a required bridge for every player.
For the numbered-game path: continue with 5, then 6
If you would rather move through the next numbered entries, play Resident Evil 5 after Resident Evil 4, then Resident Evil 6. Capcom places their stories in March 2009 and 2013, respectively. You can play Revelations between 4 and 5 without disrupting that order, or leave it out of this route.

For a later-era entry: Resident Evil 7 biohazard
Resident Evil 7 biohazard takes place in July 2017, making it the latest story date in this selection. Choose it if you want to jump to a later point in the series chronology. Its position on the timeline alone does not show how closely its characters, mechanics, or tone follow Code: Veronica.

Which Resident Evil 4 edition should you choose?
Capcom’s game lineup lists Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. The timeline establishes the story’s place in the series, but it does not distinguish editions or establish which version is right for a particular platform. Choose the edition available for the system you intend to play on, and check that listing for its platform and included content before buying. This chronology recommendation applies to the story entry; it is not a platform-compatibility recommendation.

What this order can—and cannot—tell you
This route answers the chronology question using Capcom’s official timeline. It does not answer which game is easiest, scariest, most similar in gameplay to Code: Veronica, or best reviewed. The cited Capcom material supplies dates and brief story descriptions, not comparative assessments of difficulty, mechanics, accessibility, or player satisfaction. Treat any preference-based ranking on those grounds as an individual judgment rather than a fact established by the timeline.
