Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no evidence-backed universal “best” red dot for every AR-15. The right choice depends on rail fit, the mount and sight height you need, reticle style, and how you weigh each manufacturer’s battery-life claims. This comparison covers four reflex red-dot models and one holographic sight using their manufacturers’ published specifications—not independent, side-by-side testing.
How to choose an optic for an AR-15
Confirm the rail and mount
Check both the rifle’s rail interface and the optic’s supplied or required mount. Aimpoint describes the Duty RDS as AR-15 Ready and lists its included mount for MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails. EOTECH lists Weaver or MIL-STD-1913 rail compatibility for the XPS2. Those specifications do not establish that every aftermarket mount or height will fit your setup.

Choose the reticle and sight type
A simple dot, a circle-dot option, and a holographic reticle are different choices. Aimpoint calls the Duty RDS a reflex optic and lists a 2 MOA dot. Holosun offers selectable dot and circle configurations on the HE530C-RD and HE515CT-RD. EOTECH describes the XPS2 as a holographic weapon sight (HWS), with reticles including a 68 MOA ring and 1 MOA dot. “Red dot” is often used broadly, but it does not mean these products use identical technology.

Compare battery figures cautiously
Battery-life figures below are manufacturer claims made under different stated settings and conditions; they are not directly comparable test results. Aimpoint gives a setting and room-temperature condition, while EOTECH specifies a nominal setting and room temperature. Holosun’s page says “up to” a stated duration. Actual use and settings matter, so treat these figures as product specifications rather than a ranking.

What each model is suited to
Aimpoint Duty RDS: a straightforward dot with an included Picatinny mount
The Duty RDS is the most direct fit among these options for someone seeking a conventional 2 MOA reflex dot and a manufacturer-listed Picatinny mount in the package. Its listed 1.5-inch optical axis and battery-life condition give useful setup details to check against your rifle and intended use. Aimpoint describes it as AR-15 Ready, but still verify the actual rail and mounting arrangement on your firearm.
Holosun HE530C-RD: enclosed optic with three reticle configurations
The HE530C-RD stands out on published features for its enclosed housing, selectable dot, circle, or combined reticle, side-loading battery tray, solar backup, and Shake Awake feature. Holosun lists IP68 protection and a 1.41-inch QD mount, which it identifies as an absolute co-witness mount for standard-height iron sights. Confirm that the supplied mount’s height and your iron-sight setup match your intended sight picture.

Holosun HE515CT-RD: titanium micro sight with selectable reticle
The HE515CT-RD is described by Holosun as a titanium micro rifle sight. The manufacturer lists a selectable dot/circle reticle, a side-loading CR2032 tray, a 1.41-inch QD mount, and IP68 protection. The cited specifications do not state a battery-life figure, so there is no supported basis here to compare its runtime with the other models.
Trijicon RMR Type 2 RM01: compact LED optic with a tall rail mount
Trijicon’s RMR Type 2 RM01 uses a 3.25 MOA LED dot and includes an RM34 tall Picatinny rail mount. Trijicon lists rifle, shotgun, and carbine among its applications. Its battery claim is expressed as typical use at 70°F, with a warning that extreme temperatures affect performance; it should not be read as a guarantee across all conditions.
Rank #3
- High-performance 2MOA red dot reticle for enhanced accuracy.
EOTECH XPS2: holographic reticle and named magnifier pairings
The XPS2 is a holographic sight, not a reflex red-dot optic. Its ring-and-dot reticle option and listed Weaver/MIL-STD-1913 compatibility may appeal to buyers who specifically want EOTECH’s HWS format. The manufacturer says it is not night-vision compatible and identifies the G33, G43, and G45 as compatible HWS magnifiers. Its stated battery runtime is tied to nominal setting 12 and room temperature.
Mount height and iron-sight co-witness
Co-witness describes how the optic’s aiming point and iron sights align in the sight picture. Mount height is therefore a functional part of fit, not just a packaging detail. Holosun specifically calls the HE530C-RD’s 1.41-inch QD mount an absolute co-witness mount for standard-height iron sights. Do not assume that another model’s included mount produces the same alignment: check its listed height and confirm compatibility with your particular rail and iron sights.

- Reticle allows for 4 different styles. Dot, Circle/Dot, Crosshair/Dot, Crosshair/Circle/Dot combinations. All in one sight!
- A 33mm lens provides quick target acquisition. Wide field of view to maintain situational awareness.
- Very sturdy and secure rail mounting system. Will not come loose, made to last.
- Parallax corrected & unlimited eye-relief, where the dot goes, so does the bullet!
- Ultralight, waterproof and shockproof - Powered one 3V lithium battery (included).
Which one should you choose?
- For a simple 2 MOA reflex dot and included Picatinny mount: consider the Aimpoint Duty RDS.
- For selectable dot, circle, or combined reticles in an enclosed optic: compare the Holosun HE530C-RD’s feature set and stated mount height.
- For a titanium micro sight with selectable reticle: the Holosun HE515CT-RD is the model in this group described that way; its cited product details do not state battery life.
- For a compact LED dot with a tall Picatinny mount included: review the Trijicon RMR Type 2 RM01 and its temperature-qualified battery claim.
- For a holographic ring-and-dot reticle or a named EOTECH magnifier pairing: the EOTECH XPS2 is the holographic option here; note its lack of night-vision compatibility.
These are specification-based distinctions, not performance rankings. The manufacturers’ claims do not establish which optic is toughest, fastest, clearest, or best-performing in a direct comparison.
