For a lightweight home-network service such as DNS filtering, a Raspberry Pi Zero–class board may be enough; the main reason to switch is often a feature the Zero lacks, such as built-in Ethernet. The Orange Pi Zero LTS is one compact option with onboard 10/100 Ethernet, but its 256 MB or 512 MB of RAM makes it a better fit for modest workloads than for a crowded, storage-heavy server. Choose by network needs, memory, storage, and software support—not by board name alone.
What the Raspberry Pi Zero offers—and what a server alternative can improve
Raspberry Pi describes the Zero family as small, affordable boards with a minimal form factor, a full Linux operating system, and essential ports. The Zero boards use microSD storage, mini-HDMI, and two micro-USB ports: one for power and one for external devices. The Zero 2 W has 512 MB of memory and 2.4 GHz single-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, but no onboard Ethernet. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation is the reference for these family specifications.

That makes a Zero 2 W convenient where Wi-Fi is acceptable and the service is lightweight. An alternative may be preferable when you want a wired network connection without an adapter, more memory, or different storage I/O. Those advantages are not automatic: check the specifications for the exact board and RAM configuration.
Orange Pi Zero LTS: compact, with built-in Fast Ethernet
The Orange Pi Zero LTS product listing specifies an Allwinner H3 processor, 256 MB or 512 MB of DDR3 memory, TF-card storage up to 32 GB, USB 2.0, onboard 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, USB OTG power, and Debian among its supported operating systems. The listed board measures 48 mm × 46 mm and has a 26-pin header.

Where it fits
Its clearest advantage over a Zero 2 W for a wired home-network service is the built-in Ethernet socket. A small DNS or ad-blocking service is the kind of modest workload for which a compact board can make sense, provided the chosen software image works well on the specific model.
Limits to account for
- Network speed: the official listing specifies 10/100 Ethernet, not Gigabit Ethernet.
- Memory: the listed configurations are 256 MB or 512 MB. That is limited headroom for multiple services or memory-intensive software.
- Storage and ports: the listing specifies TF-card storage up to 32 GB and USB 2.0. Confirm that this I/O is adequate for the service and any local data you plan to keep.
- Software support: the page names Debian, but that alone does not establish the quality or ongoing maintenance of current images for a particular board revision.
The published specifications do not establish independent performance benchmarks, current stock, or regional support quality. Verify the exact RAM variant, board revision, available images, and local listing before buying.

How to choose a board for your service
- Start with the network connection. Decide whether Wi-Fi is suitable where the board will live or whether you require wired Ethernet. If wired is necessary, check that it is onboard or account for a USB adapter; also check the listed speed. The Orange Pi Zero LTS listing specifies 10/100 Ethernet.
- Size memory for the workload. Consider how many services will run together and what they do. A board that boots is not necessarily a comfortable host for several services; compare the exact RAM configuration against your planned use.
- Check storage and I/O. Confirm the supported card type and capacity, available USB ports, and any faster storage interface you need. Plan backups for data and configuration so a card failure does not take your service and its setup with it.
- Verify the operating system for the exact board. Look for a maintained image for the specific revision, then check that it includes the packages and architecture your service requires. A manufacturer’s OS list is a starting point, not proof of current maintenance.
- Confirm the physical setup. Check the footprint, power connector and requirements, case options, and whether Wi-Fi helps in your intended location. The Orange Pi Zero LTS listing gives a footprint of 48 mm × 46 mm and specifies USB OTG power.
- Compare the complete setup cost. Include a reliable power supply, storage card, case, and any Ethernet or USB accessories you need. Prices, stock, and regional listings can vary; verify them for your location rather than assuming the board alone is the full cost.
Which option makes sense?
Keep a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W in consideration if its 512 MB of memory and Wi-Fi meet the needs of a lightweight service and you do not require onboard Ethernet. Consider the Orange Pi Zero LTS if a built-in wired connection and very small footprint matter more, and its Fast Ethernet, limited memory, and TF-card/USB 2.0 storage suit the planned workload. For multiple services, higher throughput, or storage-heavy use, compare other boards by those specific requirements; the available specifications here do not support naming a universal winner.
