For smoother PlayStation Portal Remote Play, enable Remote Play on your PS5, use the same PlayStation account on both devices, connect the PS5 to your router by Ethernet if practical, and put Portal on 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Sony recommends a connection of at least 15 Mbps, but that figure is guidance—not a guarantee of smooth play. Portal automatically adjusts stream quality; you can also set its maximum to 1080p High Quality or 1080p Standard.
Set up the PS5 for Remote Play
- Connect the PS5 to the internet, sign in to the PlayStation account you use on Portal, and install the current PS5 system software.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play for the user who will play. Sony’s setup guide is available at PlayStation Support.
- If you want Portal to wake the PS5 from Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
These settings make Remote Play and network wake available; they do not improve the strength or stability of your Wi-Fi signal. Menu wording can vary with system software and region.

Prioritize the network connection
Wire the PS5 when practical
Connect the PS5 to your router with an Ethernet cable if you can. This is Sony’s recommended setup for Portal. If the PS5 has to use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends connecting the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network. Sony does not specify a cable category or model.

Connect Portal to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when available. If your router automatically steers devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, consider disabling band steering for Portal’s connection if your router supports it. Router controls differ by manufacturer, so use the router’s own documentation rather than looking for a universal menu path.

Interpret Sony’s speed recommendation correctly
Sony recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better Portal experience. The cited support page does not state a publication year, and this is a recommendation—not a guaranteed threshold for every home or a promise of low latency. Sony does not provide a latency, jitter, or packet-loss target in the cited guidance. Distance, interference, congestion, ISP routing, and other network conditions can still affect play.
Sony’s recommendations and connection guidance are in its Portal Remote Play setup guide. Public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control, and access to some public networks—including certain 5 GHz networks—can be limited by regional requirements. See PlayStation’s Portal system software information.

Choose Portal’s maximum video quality
During Remote Play, Portal adjusts video quality automatically to suit the internet connection. Its quality setting chooses a maximum, not a fixed bitrate or a promise that every moment will stream at the selected resolution. The two available maximums are:
| Maximum setting | When to try it |
|---|---|
| 1080p High Quality | Start here if your connection is stable and you want the higher available quality ceiling. |
| 1080p Standard | Test this if you experience stutters or unstable quality; compare it with High Quality on the same network. |
The options and automatic adjustment are described on Sony’s PlayStation Accessories page. Trying Standard is a practical troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that every connection problem will disappear.

Troubleshoot stutters in a useful order
- Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet. If it is already wired, keep that connection in place while testing other changes.
- Improve the wireless path. Move Portal and, if the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, the PS5 closer to the router. Reduce walls and other physical obstacles between devices and router. Sony recommends wired PS5 networking and improving device placement in its Portal troubleshooting guide.
- Check the console settings. Confirm Enable Remote Play is on. If Portal needs to wake the console, confirm both Rest Mode network options are enabled.
- Confirm the account and connection. Make sure both devices use the same PlayStation account and that the PS5 is online.
- Compare the quality ceilings. Try 1080p Standard, then compare stability and image quality with High Quality under the same network conditions.
- Test another network if the issue is on public Wi-Fi. Access restrictions and local network quality may be outside your control.
What to compare when tuning the setup
Change one condition at a time so the result is easier to interpret. Compare a wired PS5 connection with its previous connection, Portal on 5 GHz with its available alternative, or a closer and less obstructed router position with the current placement. Then compare the two Portal quality ceilings on the same network. Sony recommends the wired-console and 5 GHz approaches, but its cited support pages do not publish a universal router configuration or latency threshold.
PS5 display, HDR, resolution, or performance-mode settings are not established by the cited PlayStation guidance as ways to improve Portal streaming, so they are not the settings to prioritize for connection smoothness.
