Best PS5 Settings for a Long Open-World RPG: Performance, HDR, and Accessibility

A practical PS5 setup guide for long open-world RPG sessions: choose the game’s graphics mode, configure Game Presets, calibrate HDR, and match accessibility settings to your needs.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

For a long open-world RPG session, begin with the game’s own display and accessibility menus, then use PS5 system settings as defaults and finishing adjustments. Choose Performance Mode when responsive, smoother motion matters; choose Resolution Mode when detail matters. Calibrate HDR only if your display supports it, and use accessibility options to remove the specific reading, contrast, motion, or controller barrier you face.

There is no universal “best” profile: an unnamed RPG may implement these modes differently, and your television or monitor determines what HDR can show. The settings below give you a dependable starting point without promising a frame rate, resolution, or HDR result that the game and display have not documented.

Use this order for the best PS5 settings for a long open-world RPG

  1. Open the RPG’s own settings first. Select its performance, image-quality, HDR, subtitle, camera, and control options. The game decides what each mode actually changes.
  2. Set a PS5 Game Preset only as a default. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and choose your preferred Performance Mode or Resolution Mode where the console offers that choice.
  3. Configure HDR in Video Output. Use Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, then run Adjust HDR if HDR is supported by your display.
  4. Apply accessibility settings at the level that provides the feature. PS5 controls cover system display, text, motion and controller access; the game’s own menu may provide additional options.
  5. Play a demanding area for a few minutes before committing. A busy city, weather event, combat encounter or fast camera movement reveals whether your chosen mode and display settings are comfortable for a multi-hour session.

This sequence prevents a common mistake: treating a console-wide preference as proof of what a particular RPG supports. A game can ignore a preset, offer only one graphics mode, or use different names for equivalent options.

Performance Mode or Resolution Mode?

When an RPG exposes both modes, the practical choice is between motion responsiveness and image detail. PlayStation Support describes the purpose of the preset this way: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” That is a description of intent, not a guaranteed specification for every title.

Choose this mode Prioritizes What to check in the game Best fit for a long session when…
Performance Mode More responsive controls and smoother-looking motion, where the game implements those benefits Whether visual detail, effects, draw distance or other image settings are reduced; whether the mode is available in all areas Camera movement feels tiring, you notice judder, or precise dodging and aiming matter more than maximum detail
Resolution Mode Higher graphic quality or detail, where the game implements that trade-off Whether motion becomes less fluid, whether the mode changes output only in certain scenes, and whether the display accepts the resulting signal You prefer sharper scenery, denser effects or a more detailed image and can comfortably accept slower motion

How to choose inside the RPG

  1. Pause the game and open its Graphics, Display or similarly named menu.
  2. Read the game’s description for each option instead of assuming that “performance” means a particular frame rate or that “resolution” means a particular output resolution.
  3. Switch modes in a representative area. Turn the camera, ride or fast-travel through a busy location, and enter combat if the game allows it.
  4. Keep the mode that reduces discomfort over a long period. A technically sharper image is not automatically the better choice if camera motion causes eye strain.
  5. Check the developer’s current patch notes or support page if a mode behaves differently from its description. Updates can alter graphics options.

Do not infer an exact frame rate, resolution, ray-tracing setting or reconstruction technique from the mode name. The title and its current support information are the authority for those details.

Set a PS5 Game Preset without overriding the game

PS5 can remember a default preference for supported games. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, then select the available performance or resolution preference. This is useful when you regularly install games that expose the same choice, because you do not have to select it from scratch each time.

  • The preset applies only to games that offer the relevant modes.
  • Some games may not apply the preference, may require an in-game selection, or may provide different graphics choices.
  • The preset does not identify the game’s frame rate, resolution, HDR behavior or image-quality compromise.
  • If the game’s menu shows a different selection after launch, use the game’s setting for that title.

For a household console, set the preset for the person who most often starts new games, then verify every RPG individually. This avoids assuming that a console preference has changed a title that does not support it.

How to adjust HDR on PS5

HDR is configured in the PS5 video-output menu, but the display, its input, cables and picture mode determine whether the result is useful. Sony notes that HDR image-quality availability depends on the home-entertainment setup. No single HDR value can therefore be promised for every television or monitor.

Open the HDR controls

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Screen and Video.
  3. Choose Video Output.
  4. Open HDR and choose the behavior you want.
  5. Return to the same Video Output area and select Adjust HDR to run the on-screen calibration.

Follow the display manufacturer’s instructions for the correct HDMI input, supported signal and picture mode. If the display has separate game, cinema or HDR picture profiles, use the profile intended for the input you use for the PS5; the available labels differ by model.

On When Supported versus Always On

PS5 HDR option Behavior Use it when… Important limitation
On When Supported HDR-capable content is sent as HDR; unsupported games and apps remain SDR You want SDR content to stay SDR and prefer the source content’s intended format It does not add HDR to a game that was not authored or tested for HDR
Always On The PS5 converts unsupported games and apps to HDR output You have a reason to prefer a consistent HDR signal and have checked that the converted image looks good on your display Conversion is not proof that the game was created for HDR; SDR content may look wrong or less natural

For most mixed libraries, On When Supported is the safer starting point because unsupported content remains SDR. Try Always On only as a deliberate preference after comparing the same scene in both behaviors.

Calibrate for the actual display

Run Adjust HDR while the PS5 is connected to the display and input you use for play. Make the on-screen adjustments exactly as instructed; do not copy values from another television. If the image looks washed out, excessively dark or lacking highlight detail after calibration, check the display’s HDR picture mode and HDMI settings before changing game brightness. Then review the RPG’s own HDR or brightness slider, because game-level calibration and console output calibration serve different stages of the signal path.

PS5 accessibility settings for games

Accessibility is not one universal preset. Start with the barrier that affects you, change the smallest number of settings needed, and then test the game’s menus and a normal play section. Open Settings > Accessibility on PS5 to find system-level options. Sony also directs players to each game’s PlayStation Store hub to review the accessibility features provided by that title.

If the barrier is… PS5 settings to investigate What to verify in the RPG
Small or difficult-to-read interface text Text Size, Bold Text and related display options Subtitle size, dialogue text, map labels, menu scaling and whether the game uses its own text controls
Low separation between foreground and background High Contrast and Color Correction Enemy indicators, loot highlights, quest markers and color-coded mechanics
Difficulty distinguishing colors Color Correction Whether the game has a color-blind mode or non-color indicators such as symbols and patterns
Motion sensitivity or discomfort Reduce Motion and any related display options Camera shake, motion blur, field-of-view controls, head-bob effects and cutscene behavior
Limited reach, strength or dexterity Button assignments, controller settings and other input accommodations Toggle versus hold actions, remapping, stick sensitivity, vibration controls and one-button sequences
Difficulty using the standard controller layout Controller-accessibility options, including alternative input arrangements Whether the game accepts the remapped inputs for every action, including menus and quick-time events

Use the game’s own accessibility list as the final check. A system setting may change the PS5 interface while leaving in-game subtitles, icons or camera effects unchanged.

Color inversion has an HDR consequence

PS5 color inversion reverses screen text and background colors. Sony documents that HDR is turned off when color inversion is enabled. If you need inversion, expect the display to leave HDR while it remains active; decide whether that trade-off is acceptable for the game and session. Other display options, such as text size, bold text, high contrast, color correction and reduce motion, are documented separately and do not carry that stated HDR consequence.

Controller access and the optional Access controller

Players who need an alternative physical control arrangement can review Sony’s Access controller guidance alongside PS5 controller settings. It is an optional route for controller access, not a requirement for a long RPG session and not a universal fit. Check the game’s input support and the controller’s configuration requirements before committing to a layout.

  1. Confirm the game build. Install the current update offered by the console, then read the title’s current graphics and accessibility notes if a patch changed them.
  2. Pick the game mode. Start with Performance Mode if motion comfort and responsive control are your priorities; start with Resolution Mode if detail is your priority. Test the actual game rather than relying on the label.
  3. Set HUD and text options. Increase text size or contrast only as far as needed so the interface remains legible without obscuring the world.
  4. Reduce unwanted motion. Disable or reduce camera shake, motion blur or similar effects in the game when available, then use the PS5 Reduce Motion option for system-level motion.
  5. Configure input. Remap difficult actions, choose toggles instead of holds where the game supports them, and test every essential action in a safe area.
  6. Choose HDR behavior. Use On When Supported when you want unsupported content to remain SDR; calibrate through Adjust HDR for the connected display.
  7. Run a five-minute comfort test. Read dialogue, inspect the map, rotate the camera, traverse a busy area and complete a combat encounter. Change one setting at a time so you know which adjustment helped.
  8. Save the profile. Record the choices in a note or photograph the menus if you share the console. Recheck them after changing displays or reinstalling the game.

Troubleshoot the most common problems

The RPG keeps using the “wrong” graphics mode

  • Reopen the game’s Graphics or Display menu; the title’s selection takes precedence over a console preference.
  • Confirm that the game actually offers both modes. The PS5 preset cannot create a mode the developer did not provide.
  • Check whether the game requires a restart after changing the mode.
  • Look for a current developer support note or patch description if the option disappeared or changed.

HDR looks worse than SDR

  • Run Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR again for the display and input currently in use.
  • Verify that the display’s HDR-capable input and picture profile are active according to its manufacturer.
  • Switch from Always On to On When Supported and compare a title known to support HDR with an unsupported app or game.
  • Check the RPG’s own HDR or brightness control instead of forcing a console-wide conversion.

Text is readable in menus but not during play

  • Look for separate subtitle, dialogue, HUD and map-text controls in the game.
  • Use PS5 Text Size, Bold Text or High Contrast for system menus, then check whether the game exposes equivalent settings.
  • Try Color Correction if colored quest markers or combat indicators are the problem; confirm that symbols or shapes are available when color alone is insufficient.

Motion still causes discomfort

  • Use the game’s camera-shake, motion-blur, head-bob and field-of-view controls if present.
  • Enable PS5 Reduce Motion for system-level effects.
  • Test Performance Mode if its implementation produces smoother motion in that title; do not assume every game delivers the same result.
  • If discomfort continues, stop the session and adjust one variable at a time rather than forcing a setting that makes play unpleasant.

Color inversion changed the picture unexpectedly

That behavior is expected: Sony states that HDR is turned off while PS5 color inversion is enabled. Disable inversion when HDR is more important, or keep inversion when its accessibility benefit is essential.

What you can and cannot conclude from PS5 settings

A Performance Mode label does not establish a particular frame rate. A Resolution Mode label does not establish a particular output resolution. Always On does not prove that SDR content became native HDR. A larger PS5 text setting does not guarantee larger dialogue in the RPG. These outcomes belong to the game, its update, the connected display and the player’s chosen accessibility features.

When you need a definitive answer, use the game’s current menu description and official developer or platform documentation for that exact title and version. If those materials do not state a number or feature, treat it as not established rather than filling the gap with a generic PS5 expectation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final pre-session checklist

  • Game graphics mode selected and tested in a busy area
  • PS5 Game Preset set only as a supported default
  • HDR set to On When Supported or Always On for a deliberate reason
  • Adjust HDR completed for the connected display
  • Game subtitles, HUD and color options checked separately from PS5 settings
  • Reduce Motion, text, contrast and color options matched to the actual barrier
  • Controller remapping tested in menus and gameplay
  • Color inversion decision made with its HDR consequence understood

The best long-session configuration is the one that keeps the game legible, comfortable and controllable for you. Start with the RPG’s documented options, use PS5 settings to fill the gaps, and verify the result on the display and game version you actually use.
