Start with Final Fantasy VII if you want a PS1 RPG whose opening quickly establishes its lead character and central conflict. For a storybook fantasy and a lively ensemble, try Final Fantasy IX; for a more unusual tale built around parallel worlds, pick Chrono Cross. This is a practical shortlist, not a measured ranking of difficulty or a claim that one game is easiest for everyone.
Which PS1 RPG should a beginner play first?
Final Fantasy VII is the clearest starting recommendation here. Square Enix identifies it as a single-player RPG and introduces Cloud, a former SOLDIER operative working as a mercenary, as he joins Avalanche in an operation against a Mako reactor. That gives a newcomer a protagonist, a reason for his involvement, and an immediate conflict to follow. Square Enix’s PSOne Classics page supplies the game’s setup and historical release context; it does not establish current store availability in every region.

“Best story” is subjective, and a story premise alone cannot prove that a game is easy to play. The order below is an editorial recommendation based on how each official description presents its opening and narrative frame—not a difficulty score or a comprehensive ranking of every PS1 RPG.

| Game | What draws you in | Best fit | Version note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII | Cloud joins Avalanche’s operation against a Mako reactor. | A first story-led RPG with a concrete lead character and opening conflict. | Square Enix’s cited page covers a PSOne Classics release for PS3 and PSP; it does not confirm current availability in every store region. |
| Final Fantasy IX | The Tantalus theatre troupe plans to kidnap Princess Garnet, setting an emotional fantasy adventure in motion. | A fairy-tale tone and an ensemble-oriented setup. | PlayStation’s cited page documents a later PS4 edition with high-speed and no-encounter boosters. Those are PS4-edition features, not claims about the original PS1 release. |
| Chrono Cross | The story unfolds across two interlinked parallel worlds. | A reader who wants a stranger, more layered premise after—or instead of—a more direct opening. | Square Enix’s archive lists a PS one Books release. PlayStation’s modern page describes Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, a separate modern edition that includes Radical Dreamers. |
Final Fantasy VII: the most direct entry point
Cloud’s role and the reactor mission give the opening a straightforward point of reference. That makes Final Fantasy VII the easiest of these three to recommend when a newcomer wants a story they can quickly get oriented in. “Easiest to get oriented in” describes the premise, not combat, systems, or overall play difficulty.

Final Fantasy IX: a storybook alternative
Final Fantasy IX opens with a clear dramatic hook: the Tantalus troupe intends to kidnap Princess Garnet. PlayStation describes the journey that follows as an emotional fantasy adventure. Choose it if that theatrical, fairy-tale setup sounds more appealing than Final Fantasy VII’s reactor operation.
The convenience options documented on PlayStation’s Final Fantasy IX page belong to the later PS4 edition. PlayStation also notes PS5 compatibility subject to system details. Store availability and terms can change, so check the relevant regional listing before buying.

Chrono Cross: parallel worlds and a more involved premise
PlayStation describes Chrono Cross as a story set across two linked parallel worlds. That structure may appeal if you enjoy piecing together a less conventional narrative, but it also gives the premise more layers than the other two descriptions here. Calling it a more involved starting point is an inference from the story frame, not a formal measure of complexity or difficulty.
Keep the releases distinct: Square Enix’s Chrono Cross archive identifies the original game and lists a PS one Books release, while PlayStation’s modern edition page covers Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition and its included companion story.

- Breath of Fire
How to choose among them
- Pick Final Fantasy VII for the most direct opening setup in this shortlist.
- Pick Final Fantasy IX for the theatre-troupe kidnapping hook and fairy-tale fantasy tone.
- Pick Chrono Cross if parallel worlds and a more layered narrative frame sound intriguing.
If you specifically want to play an original PS1 release, look for an original physical copy rather than assuming that a modern digital edition is the same release. The cited publisher and platform pages establish game identity and release context, but not the condition, authenticity, compatibility, price, or current availability of an individual used listing. Check those details with the seller before buying.

These recommendations compare how quickly each cited premise gives a newcomer something to follow: a character and immediate operation in Final Fantasy VII, a theatrical plan in Final Fantasy IX, and a two-world structure in Chrono Cross. They do not establish which game has the simplest battle system, least demanding progression, or best fit for every player. If “easy” means easy to understand at the start, choose by opening premise; if it means easy to play, these story descriptions are not enough to rank them.

- Original Black Band release
For broader franchise context, PlayStation maintains a guide to Final Fantasy. A reader’s question about wanting PS1 RPGs beyond FF7 without something too complicated appeared in a Reddit r/psx discussion; it is one person’s wording, not a representative survey.
