The available sources support a closer comparison of Proton Mail and Tuta, plus limited consideration of StartMail, Mailfence, and mailbox.org. The right choice depends on how you exchange encrypted mail, whether you need a familiar desktop client, and which account features matter—not on a single security ranking.
What “private and secure email” means in practice
End-to-end encryption is not a blanket guarantee that every message in every situation is protected the same way. The key questions are whether encryption applies by default between users of the service, how you protect a message sent to someone outside it, and what happens when you use other mail clients or protocols.

Provider features also cannot secure an unlocked device, prevent someone from accessing a compromised account, or control how a recipient handles a message after opening it. Compare the service’s documented protections with your own account and device security needs.
Proton Mail and Tuta: the clearest comparison
Proton’s June 2026 comparison describes both Proton Mail and Tuta as offering end-to-end encryption, but their compatibility and external-recipient approaches differ. Because this is a Proton-authored comparison, treat its statements about Tuta as the competitor’s account, not as independent verification. Proton’s comparison
#1 Best Overall
| Decision point | Proton Mail | Tuta |
|---|---|---|
| OpenPGP | Proton says it supports OpenPGP. | Proton says Tuta does not support PGP. |
| Protected mail to external recipients | Proton says users can password-protect messages to external recipients. | Proton says Tuta users can password-protect messages to external recipients. |
| Desktop mail clients and standard protocols | Proton says its Bridge supports desktop clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail. | Proton says Tuta does not support standard IMAP, POP3, or SMTP and instead relies on its apps or a Thunderbird add-on. |
| Migration tools | Proton says it offers migration tools. | Not stated in Proton’s comparison. |
Choose Proton if client compatibility or OpenPGP matters
Proton is the clearer fit of these two if you want to use OpenPGP or keep a desktop-client workflow through Bridge. The trade-off is that Bridge is an additional compatibility layer rather than standard protocol access directly from the mailbox.
Consider Tuta if its app-based workflow suits you
Tuta may suit someone willing to use its own apps or the Thunderbird add-on described by Proton. If standard IMAP, POP3, or SMTP access is essential, verify Tuta’s current documentation before switching, since the protocol limitation above comes from Proton’s comparison rather than Tuta’s own materials.

StartMail
TechRadar selected StartMail as its security pick and describes aliases, tracking protection, and removal of IP addresses from message headers. These are editorially reported features, not independently tested findings in the available material. Both appear in iTechGuides’ September 2026 secure-email directory. That listing alone does not establish their current encryption coverage, client support, migration tools, storage, aliases, custom-domain features, or prices, so there is not enough support here to describe either service as a specific-feature recommendation. The directory says it researched official sources and discloses reader-supported commissions and paid vendor placement. iTechGuides’ directory

How to choose for your own setup
- Decide how recipients will read protected mail. If you regularly send encrypted messages to people outside your provider, check how the password-protected message flow works for both sender and recipient.
- List the clients and protocols you rely on. Confirm whether you can continue using your desktop mail app, whether a bridge or add-on is needed, and whether standard IMAP, POP3, or SMTP access is available.
- Plan for migration before closing an old account. Confirm that the provider supports the import or migration process you need; the available comparison specifically says Proton offers migration tools but does not establish an equivalent for the other candidates.
- Check account limits and fit. Compare current storage, aliases, custom-domain support, family or business options, and included services on the provider’s own plan page. These limits can change.
- Review the provider’s policies and jurisdiction. Read its current privacy and security documentation rather than treating a “secure” label or an editorial ranking as a substitute.
- Secure the account and devices too. Use strong, unique account credentials and available account protections, keep devices updated, and consider what a recipient can do with a message after receiving it.
Prices and rankings are snapshots, not security measurements
TechRadar’s page, last updated February 23, 2026, reported Proton Mail Plus at $4.99 per month; Proton Unlimited at $12.99 per month on monthly billing or $9.99 per month on annual billing; and StartMail Personal at $6.99 per month on monthly billing or $4.99 per month on annual billing. These are dated figures reported by TechRadar, not guaranteed current rates. Check the providers’ plan pages for current prices, billing terms, and feature limits before paying. TechRadar also discloses affiliate commissions, so treat its “privacy pick” for Proton and “security pick” for StartMail as that publication’s editorial judgments, not objective security measurements. TechRadar’s comparison and disclosure
Likewise, a directory’s breadth does not make its ordering a universal security standard. iTechGuides discloses reader-supported commissions and paid vendor placement, so use its list as a starting point and verify product claims with providers. The available evidence does not support a responsible ten-service ranking with current, comparable feature and price details.
Rank #4
Bottom line
For a practical first comparison, focus on Proton Mail and Tuta: the documented distinction in the available comparison is OpenPGP and desktop-client compatibility, not a universal winner in security. Consider StartMail, Mailfence, and mailbox.org only after checking their current first-party documentation for the features that matter to you. Do not rely on an unsupported “top ten” order to make the decision.
