For personal memory you can review and delete, Open WebUI is the most directly documented fit in this comparison. It can run with local models and also supports document knowledge bases, but hosting the interface yourself does not guarantee every model or service stays on your machine. AnythingLLM is another option for local desktop document work; Ollama, llama.cpp, Jan and LM Studio are components or desktop apps that may need a separate memory layer.
First decide what you mean by memory. A personal memory bank carries facts and preferences between chats. Document retrieval, often called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), searches files for relevant passages when you ask a question. They solve related but different problems, and a private setup depends on where inference, embeddings, storage and any connected services actually run.

What “memory” means in a private assistant
Personal memory across chats
A personal memory feature stores concise information—such as preferences or recurring details—and can make it available in later conversations. The useful questions are whether you can inspect, edit or delete those stored facts, and whether the model reliably knows when to save or retrieve them.
Document Q&A and RAG
Document retrieval is a different workflow: files are divided into chunks, converted into embeddings, stored, and searched for passages relevant to a prompt. Open WebUI’s documentation describes this as RAG. It can ground an answer in your files, but a searchable document collection is not the same as a small, curated personal memory bank. Compare the main options by job
| Option | Best-supported fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Open WebUI | Self-hostable chat interface with documented personal memory controls, local-model support and document knowledge bases. | Whether the chosen model handles function calling reliably; where inference and embeddings run; access controls; and whether the deployment is for personal or multi-user use. |
| AnythingLLM | Vendor-described local desktop document chat and self-hosted multi-user deployment. Its vendor also describes memory in its mobile app’s on-device models. | Desktop versus server workflow, local versus hosted model configuration, and whether the document features meet your needs. These are product claims, not an independent privacy audit. AnythingLLM |
| Ollama or llama.cpp with an interface | Local inference components identified in Open WebUI’s alternatives guide; neither is, by itself, a complete memory assistant. | Model availability and hardware compatibility, plus which chat interface or memory layer you will pair with the runner. |
| Jan or LM Studio | Desktop apps for local model use named in the same alternatives guide. | Whether the selected app or connected interface supports the persistent memory and document features you need; the guide does not establish equivalent persistent memory capabilities for these apps. |

How private is a self-hosted setup?
Self-hosting the interface is only one part of the privacy boundary. Open WebUI supports both local and hosted model providers, and its embedding guidance describes both self-hosted Ollama embeddings and OpenAI embeddings as configuration choices. A request can leave your machine if you select an external model or embedding API, or connect another cloud service. Check each component rather than relying on the label “self-hosted.”

- Other connections: Check web search and any tools or integrations that may receive prompts or retrieved content.
Open WebUI says user memories are stored in its database and scoped to the user by default. Administrators can enable or disable the memory feature and restrict access by role or group; prompt injection of memories can also be disabled independently. These are documented controls, not a formal security certification. Open WebUI memory documentation
Memory quality depends on the model
A memory interface cannot compensate for a model that calls its tools poorly. Open WebUI warns: “How well memories are stored and recalled depends heavily on the model. Frontier models manage memory well; small local models may store or retrieve information inconsistently.” Its approach relies on a model with reliable function calling and enough judgment to decide when information should be saved or retrieved.

That creates a practical trade-off: a local model may keep inference on your own hardware, while a hosted model may behave more consistently for this task but sends requests to an external provider. If dependable personal memory matters, test the exact model and configuration with representative facts, corrections and retrieval questions, and review what it actually saves before relying on it.
What Open WebUI’s memory controls offer
The documented memory tools can add, update, search, list and delete stored facts. Users can review memories and clear the memory bank. This is useful when you want persistent context without treating an entire document library as personal memory. The controls help with oversight, but they do not establish that every saved fact will be complete or correctly recalled.

Document retrieval and scaling considerations
Open WebUI’s RAG guidance says its default SentenceTransformers embedding model runs locally on CPU and uses roughly 500 MB of RAM per worker. That is the project’s configuration guidance, not a general benchmark for every setup. The same documentation says its defaults become more consequential around 100 documents or 10 concurrent users; those are project-specific operational guideposts, not universal capacity limits.
For deployments that need multiple workers, the documentation warns that local SQLite-backed ChromaDB is not suitable and identifies PGVector as the officially supported and maintained database for scaling. It recommends adjusting configuration as deployments grow. Actual resource needs depend on the model, workload and deployment, so those figures should not be read as hardware requirements or performance guarantees. Open WebUI RAG configuration guidance
Choose a setup with this checklist
- Choose the job: Use a personal memory bank for facts and preferences carried between chats; use RAG for questions answered from a collection of files. Some setups can provide both.
- Map the data path: Identify where the chat model, embeddings, storage, search and connected tools run. Select local providers where keeping data on your own systems is necessary.
- Verify controls: Confirm you can inspect and delete personal memories, and understand administrator, role and group access if others share the deployment.
- Check model behavior: Confirm the chosen model’s function calling is reliable enough to save and retrieve memory. Do not assume every small local model will behave consistently.
- Plan for scale: For a single-user desktop workflow, a desktop app may be simpler. For a self-hosted multi-user deployment or a larger document library, examine database and worker configuration rather than assuming defaults will scale.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Open WebUI if you want documented controls for a personal memory bank alongside the option to use local models and document RAG, and you are prepared to configure providers and deployment access deliberately. Choose AnythingLLM if its local desktop or self-hosted document workflow better matches your needs, while treating its privacy and feature descriptions as vendor claims. Choose Ollama or llama.cpp when you primarily need a local inference runner and are ready to pair it with an interface and memory layer. Consider Jan or LM Studio for a desktop local-model workflow, but verify the specific persistent-memory and document capabilities you require.
This is a capability-based comparison of official documentation and vendor descriptions, not an independently tested ranking or security assessment. No comparative quality benchmark is established here.
