Since January 23, 2025, Google has shown the domain alone instead of breadcrumbs in mobile search results. Breadcrumbs remain visible in desktop results, and Google still supports BreadcrumbList markup. Google announced the change; its breadcrumb documentation continues to describe the supported markup.
What breadcrumbs do for mobile SEO now
Breadcrumbs are a navigation trail that helps people understand where a page sits within a site and move to a broader section. They also communicate a page hierarchy to search engines through structured data. They are not a promise of a special mobile search-result display: Google’s January 23, 2025 update removed breadcrumb text from mobile search results across languages and regions where Google Search is available. On desktop, breadcrumbs continue to appear, and Google continues to support breadcrumb markup.

Google uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking. Its mobile-first indexing guidance recommends equivalent structured data on mobile and desktop, and names Breadcrumb among the structured-data types to prioritize if implementation must be phased. That makes accurate mobile implementation worthwhile even though the mobile SERP no longer displays the trail.
Choose a trail that reflects the site, not just the URL
Build the trail around a typical route through the site hierarchy. Google recommends representing how users normally navigate rather than mechanically turning each URL segment into a breadcrumb. Use labels readers recognize, and make each ancestor link lead to a useful destination.

A page can reasonably belong to more than one route. Google supports multiple breadcrumb trails for a page when they represent distinct user paths. Keep the visible navigation and structured data consistent about the hierarchy they represent.
Design the trail for small screens
Keep breadcrumbs visible, understandable, and near the relevant page content. W3C’s guidance on breadcrumb trails notes that placing them high on the page—typically after the header—can help users understand their location. Use concise, descriptive labels and ensure links remain usable on touch screens.

Long hierarchies need a deliberate responsive treatment. Avoid labels colliding or being shortened until their destinations become ambiguous. There is no universal item limit, truncation pattern, or pixel size prescribed by the cited guidance; choose a design that preserves the trail’s meaning. If a visual treatment abbreviates the trail, retain enough accessible information for users to understand the available navigation.

Keep mobile and desktop versions aligned
For a responsive site, verify that the same meaningful breadcrumb content and structured data are present in the mobile and desktop renderings. If the site uses separate mobile URLs, verify that URLs in the mobile markup point to the correct mobile destinations. Google recommends equivalent structured data across versions and calls for correct mobile URLs when separate URLs are used.

Add valid BreadcrumbList structured data
Google supports the BreadcrumbList structured-data type. Its documentation calls for at least two ListItem entries in order. Each item needs a name and position. Provide a URL for each item except the final one: the final item’s item property may be omitted because Google uses the URL of the page containing the markup.

Google’s examples use JSON-LD and also document Microdata and HTML approaches. Whichever supported format you choose, ensure its names, order, and destinations match the breadcrumb navigation shown to users.

Use accessible navigation semantics
W3C WAI’s Breadcrumb Pattern recommends putting the trail in a nav landmark with a distinguishing accessible label, such as “Breadcrumb,” and representing the sequence as an ordered list. If the current page is represented by a link, mark it with aria-current="page". If the current page is plain text rather than a link, that attribute is optional.
Visual separators such as chevrons can be kept out of the accessibility tree when they would merely repeat the sequence already conveyed by the labeled navigation and list. W3C’s illustrative example also cautions that browser and assistive-technology support can vary, including on mobile and touch devices, so test the pattern with the target technologies before release.
Validate the implementation and monitor it after release
- Validate the markup. Run representative pages through Google’s Breadcrumb documentation and validation workflow, including the Rich Results Test, and fix critical errors.
- Inspect deployed pages. Use URL Inspection in Search Console on a sample of live pages to check how Google sees them and whether they are accessible to Google.
- Check the mobile experience. On actual mobile layouts, verify rendering, label clarity, link destinations, keyboard operation, and behavior with the assistive technologies your audience uses. These are practical interface checks, not Google structured-data eligibility rules.
- Monitor after indexing and template changes. Review the breadcrumb rich-result report in Search Console after indexing, and repeat checks after template releases. Investigate invalid-item increases or unexpected losses of valid items. Google notes that recrawling and reindexing can take several days and that valid markup does not guarantee a search feature will appear.
What to expect in search results
Google Search Central Product Manager Caitlin Dorsey explained the mobile change on January 23, 2025: “Initially introduced as part of the ‘site hierarchy’ feature, we’ve found that the breadcrumb element isn’t as useful to people who are searching on mobile devices, as it gets cut off on smaller screens.” The practical distinction is straightforward: implement breadcrumbs for site hierarchy, navigation, accessibility, and Google-supported markup, while treating mobile breadcrumb display in search results as discontinued.
