The best way to improve a website’s performance is to measure where users are experiencing friction, identify the bottleneck, make a focused change, and measure again. Start with real-user data where it is available; use repeatable lab tests and browser tools to investigate causes. A slow page may be held back by an image, JavaScript execution, layout work, or server delivery, so no single fix is right for every site.
How do you measure website performance?
Use field data to understand what visitors experience and lab data to investigate what might be causing it. Google PageSpeed Insights (PSI) combines both: Lighthouse simulates a page load and reports diagnostics, while field data comes from the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX). When field data is available, PSI summarizes it at the 75th percentile over a rolling 28-day period, so it reflects a range of real visits rather than one test run. Google’s PageSpeed Insights documentation explains how the views differ.

- Field data: Shows how real users have experienced a page or site. Use it to see whether a problem affects visitors at scale and whether experience is improving over time.
- Lab data: Runs a controlled simulation that can be repeated while debugging. It is useful for investigating potential causes, but results can vary with device and network conditions and may not match every visitor’s experience.
Compare lab runs under consistent conditions, and do not treat a single score as a complete account of performance. A lab audit is a starting point for diagnosis; field data helps establish whether a change improved users’ experience.

Which performance targets should you use?
Google’s current Core Web Vitals guidance defines targets for three user-experience dimensions: loading, responsiveness, and visual stability. For a good experience, aim for the following thresholds, which Google’s page lists as of its December 10, 2025 update:
#1 Best Overall
- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
| Metric | What it represents | Good target |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | Loading performance: when the main visible content has appeared. | 2.5 seconds or less |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | Responsiveness: how promptly the page responds visually to user interactions. | Below 200 milliseconds |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | Visual stability: how much visible content shifts unexpectedly. | Below 0.1 |
These are experience targets, not guarantees of a particular search position. Google recommends good Core Web Vitals, but says there is no single page-experience signal and meeting report thresholds does not guarantee top rankings. See Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance and its page-experience guidance.
How should you diagnose a performance problem?
Begin with representative page types—such as a landing page, an article, and a product or application page—rather than assuming one URL represents the whole site. Record the field experience where available, the lab results, the page tested, and the conditions used. Then investigate the weakest dimension before choosing an optimization.

- Establish a baseline. Run the page in PSI or Lighthouse and note the metrics, warnings, and conditions. Check PSI’s field view when it has data for the page or origin.
- Classify the problem. Decide whether the evidence points to loading, responsiveness, visual stability, resource delivery, or another specific bottleneck. A poor metric is a symptom; it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Inspect the page in Chrome DevTools. Examine network activity, rendering and layout, and JavaScript execution to find work or resources that align with the observed delay.
- Make one focused change. Choose an intervention that addresses the identified cause, rather than applying a generic optimization list.
- Repeat the measurement. Re-run the same test under comparable conditions, compare results with the baseline, and check field data over time for evidence that real users benefited.
- Verify the experience. Confirm that content appears when expected, interactions still work, the layout remains stable, and important content can be discovered by crawlers where search visibility matters.
Lighthouse is an open-source automated audit available in Chrome DevTools, the command line, Node, and a web interface. Its failed audits are diagnostic leads, not proof of one root cause. For deeper investigation, Chrome DevTools performance tools provide views of network activity, rendering, layout, and JavaScript execution.

| Tool or data | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PageSpeed Insights | Review a URL’s Lighthouse diagnostics alongside CrUX field experience, when field data is available. | Field data represents a rolling population and period, not an immediate result from your latest change; lab results depend on test conditions. |
| Lighthouse | Run a repeatable automated audit while investigating a page, including through DevTools, CLI, Node, or the web interface. | An audit identifies opportunities and possible issues; it does not establish the cause on its own or replace real-user data. |
| Chrome DevTools | Inspect network requests, JavaScript execution, rendering, and layout when an audit points to an area of concern. | Requires investigation of the page and its behavior; it is not a substitute for field measurements of visitors’ experience. |
How can you improve image loading?
Images can account for substantial page weight, so prioritize them when measurements show that image transfer or display is contributing to a delay. Deliver an image close to its rendered dimensions, choose an appropriate file and compression level for acceptable visual quality, and use responsive techniques such as srcset or <picture> when a page needs different image resources for different displays. Google’s image SEO guidance covers image delivery and discoverability.

Lazy-load below-the-fold images, not the initial content
Lazy-loading can avoid fetching images that a visitor has not yet reached. Apply it to content outside the initial viewport when it is appropriate, but do not defer an image or other content likely to be visible as soon as the page opens. Google warns that this can delay content appearing to users. Ensure deferred content loads when it approaches visibility without requiring a user action that a crawler cannot perform. See Google’s guidance on fixing lazy-loaded website content.
Weigh fewer requests against transferred bytes
Inlining an asset can reduce the number of requests, but it can also increase the size of the page transfer. Decide based on the asset, how it is used, and the resulting payload rather than inlining everything or optimizing request count in isolation.

What should you investigate when JavaScript or rendering is slow?
Use a performance trace to determine whether the delay comes from JavaScript execution, rendering and layout, or network activity. If the evidence points to main-thread work, consider reducing or postponing work that is not needed for the current view. If it points to rendering or repeated layout work, investigate the operations and updates associated with the affected content. Defer scripts, split bundles, or preload resources only when the measurement indicates that the change addresses the bottleneck; each can add complexity or shift work rather than remove it.

Google’s JavaScript SEO guidance recommends content fingerprinting for long-lived CSS and JavaScript resource filenames. Fingerprinting changes a filename when its contents change, helping avoid stale resources in the rendering pipeline. It is one element of a cache strategy, not a complete caching configuration for every application or CDN.

When should you change server delivery or hosting?
Consider server-side work, caching, CDN coverage, and hosting capacity when measurements point to slow responses or network delivery. An infrastructure change can help with a delivery bottleneck, but it will not automatically fix excessive image weight, expensive JavaScript, or unstable layout. Diagnose which part of the request or page is slow before changing infrastructure; the available guidance does not establish one hosting provider, CDN, framework, or optimization sequence as best for every site.
How do you know whether an optimization worked?
Keep the original page, metric, test conditions, and user-facing behavior as the comparison point. Re-run the same lab test after a focused change, then watch field measurements as the rolling reporting period updates. A better lab result without a corresponding field improvement is not conclusive evidence that visitors benefited; conversely, a field change may take time to become visible because it aggregates recent visits. Also check that the improvement did not come at the expense of image quality, initial content visibility, interaction behavior, or crawlability.
