All speeds above are maximum sequential figures published by the manufacturers, not guaranteed transfer rates. Actual performance varies with the host, cable, workload, and system environment. These ratings do not establish sustained speed or which drive performs best in an independent test.

Which portable SSD suits your use?
Samsung T7 Shield: prioritize a tougher travel rating
The T7 Shield has the highest published ingress-protection rating among these three drives: IP65, compared with IP55 for the Crucial and Kingston models. Samsung also describes drop resistance up to 3m. That makes it a reasonable match for a portable SSD that will travel in a work bag or be used away from a desk, where added protection is useful. These manufacturer ratings do not mean the drive is waterproof or immune to damage; protection depends on the exposure and conditions.
The cited US 1TB blue configuration uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 and is rated up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write. Samsung lists dimensions of 59 × 88 × 13mm and weight of 98g for that configuration. Its announcement describes USB Type-C-to-C and USB Type-C-to-A cables as included; check the package contents for the exact regional model you buy.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Crucial X9 Pro: everyday transfers with IP55 protection
The X9 Pro is a practical fit for routine file transfers and carrying a working library when its 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface matches your devices. Crucial rates it up to 1,050MB/s read and 975MB/s write, with IP55 water and dust resistance and drop protection up to 2m. Its flyer describes password protection and 256-bit AES hardware encryption.
Crucial describes compatibility with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPad, select cameras, PlayStation, and Xbox, while qualifying device compatibility. Confirm the requirements for your particular phone, tablet, camera, or console rather than assuming that every device supports external storage in the same way.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Kingston XS2000: choose it for speed only if the port fits
The XS2000’s 2,000MB/s read/write rating is the highest maximum in this comparison, but it depends on a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 host. Kingston’s support FAQ says the drive is Mac-compatible but will not reach its advertised performance on Mac because the USB protocol is not USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. A USB-C connector alone does not tell you that a computer supports this interface.

The package also includes a USB-C-to-C cable. The XS2000 makes the most sense for buyers who have verified the host port and want the higher interface ceiling; without that port, paying for a speed rating the system cannot use may not be worthwhile.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)

Check your ports before choosing by speed
The host connection sets a practical ceiling on drive throughput. The T7 Shield and X9 Pro use USB 3.2 Gen 2, rated as a 10Gbps interface; the XS2000 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, rated as 20Gbps. The Kingston FAQ specifically requires Gen 2×2 for the XS2000’s advertised maximum and notes the Mac limitation described above.
- Look up the exact USB standard supported by the computer or device, not only whether it has a USB-C port.
- Check that the cable supports the relevant data standard; a connector that fits may not provide the needed interface speed.
- Consider the workload as well as the port. Maximum sequential ratings do not guarantee the same rate for many small files or long transfers.
- For phones, tablets, cameras, and consoles, confirm external-drive support and any device-specific restrictions before relying on the SSD.
Choose capacity for the files you actually keep
The listed lineups differ: Samsung and Crucial list 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB options, while Kingston also lists a 500GB version. Estimate the size of the backup or working library you plan to carry, then leave room for new files rather than buying only for today’s total. Manufacturer-listed capacity is not all necessarily available for user files; Kingston notes that formatting and other device functions use some capacity. Regional availability and variants can also differ.

Understand protection, security, and warranty claims
Water and dust ratings are not a promise against every accident
IP65 is listed for the T7 Shield; IP55 is listed for the X9 Pro and XS2000. Samsung’s drop claim is up to 3m, Crucial’s is up to 2m, and Kingston’s is up to 1.8m with the included sleeve. Treat these as manufacturer claims under their stated conditions—not a reason to expose an SSD deliberately to water, dust, or drops. A protective case and a separate backup remain sensible if the files matter.
Encryption and warranty vary by model and configuration
Samsung lists AES 256-bit hardware encryption and a limited three-year warranty for the cited US 1TB T7 Shield configuration. Crucial’s flyer describes password protection and 256-bit AES hardware encryption for the X9 Pro. Kingston’s XS2000 datasheet states a limited five-year warranty. Check the current regional warranty terms and the exact model documentation before purchase; do not assume one brand’s terms apply to every drive or market.
