Portable external HDDs to compare
| Drive | Capacity and connection | Backup, security, and coverage | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| WD My Passport, Works with USB-C | WD lists options from 2 TB to 5 TB on the product page and says the range reaches 6 TB. It describes USB-C and USB-A connectivity and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface rated up to 5 Gb/s. | WD describes scheduled backups using included Acronis True Image for Western Digital software, password protection, built-in 256-bit AES encryption, and a three-year limited warranty. | Check the precise capacity and SKU, your host device’s compatibility, and the applicable regional warranty. WD’s feature descriptions are not independent security or reliability assessments. |
| WD Elements portable HDD | Capacity and exact current interface vary by model; confirm the SKU at purchase. | TechRadar describes it as a balanced general-purpose option, while noting trade-offs in category-leading performance, capacity range, and warranty. | That judgment applies to the products and methodology in TechRadar’s comparison, not every current model or long-term failure rates. Read the comparison. |
| Toshiba Canvio Advance Plus | Available up to 4 TB; USB-powered, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and supplied with USB-C-to-Micro-B and USB-A-to-Micro-B cables. | Toshiba describes scheduled backup and password-protection software for PC and lists a three-year limited warranty. | It is formatted as NTFS for Windows 10/11. Toshiba says macOS use requires reformatting; confirm your OS and hardware setup before buying. |
| Seagate Backup Plus Portable | Seagate’s support page identifies 4 TB and 5 TB models: STHP4000400 and STHP5000400. | Seagate links to Toolkit for automatic backups and lists a two-year limited warranty for those model numbers. | Verify the exact model and regional coverage; do not assume terms apply to other Seagate drives. See Seagate’s model support page. |
| Toshiba Canvio Flex and other Canvio families | Toshiba’s 2024 catalog lists Flex, Gaming, Slim, Advance, Basics, and Ready families, with listed portable models up to 4 TB. Flex includes USB-C and USB-A options; other families differ. | Features and compatibility vary across families. The catalog’s technical notes mention reformatting for macOS. | Use the 2024 catalog as model-family context, not evidence of current local stock. Check the exact drive’s connector, software, and warranty. |
Choose capacity for the files you will actually keep
Estimate the space occupied by the folders you intend to back up, then allow for expected growth rather than buying only to match today’s total. A drive’s labeled capacity is not necessarily the amount of usable space the operating system reports. WD and Toshiba publish capacities for their product lines, but listed maximums do not confirm local retailer availability.

Compare current prices per usable terabyte only after checking the same capacity and exact model across sellers. Prices were not established here, so there is no reliable price-per-terabyte winner.
Check the connector, cable, and filesystem before buying
- Connector and cable: Confirm the computer or other host has a compatible port and that the drive includes the cable you need. Canvio Advance Plus, for example, comes with both USB-C-to-Micro-B and USB-A-to-Micro-B cables.
- Device support: Compatibility claims can differ by model and host. WD describes My Passport compatibility across Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, gaming consoles, phones, and tablets; verify support for your specific device and intended use.
- Formatting: Toshiba specifies NTFS for Canvio Advance Plus on Windows 10/11 and says reformatting is required for the macOS versions it lists. Reformatting can affect how the drive works with other devices, so check the manufacturer’s instructions for your setup before storing files.
Do not assume that one Canvio model’s connector or compatibility applies to every Canvio family. Toshiba’s catalog distinguishes the families, and its product information says compatibility depends on hardware configuration and operating system.

Match backup and security features to your operating system
WD says its included Acronis True Image for Western Digital software can schedule backups and add password protection and built-in 256-bit AES encryption. That is WD’s product-page description, not an independent security assessment. Toshiba describes scheduled backup and unique-password security software for PC on Canvio Advance Plus. These software descriptions do not establish support on every operating system; check the model’s current software requirements.
Bundled backup software can make scheduling easier, but drive-level software is not a substitute for keeping another copy of important files. A portable drive can be lost, damaged, or become inaccessible along with the computer it was meant to protect.

Compare warranty terms—and keep reliability claims in perspective
The cited product pages list different warranty terms: three years for WD My Passport and Toshiba Canvio Advance Plus, and two years for the specified Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4 TB and 5 TB models. These are limited-warranty terms, not evidence that one drive will last longer. Coverage can depend on exact SKU and region, so read the terms for the model sold where you live.
The cited sources do not provide directly comparable failure-rate data for these consumer portable drives. A review ranking or measured performance comparison is a publisher’s judgment about the products it tested, not proof of long-term reliability. Toshiba’s catalog includes reliability figures for a different HDD context; those figures should not be applied to these portable models.
