Tunarr and ErsatzTV Legacy are the most direct alternatives if you want to turn media you already own into scheduled, custom live-TV channels. They handle channel scheduling; Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby can serve as media sources, playback clients, or both, depending on how you set things up. They are not interchangeable with a general-purpose media server.

What kind of Plex alternative do you need?

If your goal is to browse and play a library on demand, Plex alternatives include general media-server apps. If you want that library arranged into channels with a schedule or programming rotation, you need a channel-scheduling layer. Tunarr and ErsatzTV Legacy are the two tools in this comparison that do that job.

Both can use a personal media library and feed channels to compatible clients. Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby may still be part of the setup rather than something you need to replace. The right combination depends on which server holds your files, how you want shows and movies scheduled, and which app you want to watch them in.

Which tool fits your scheduling style?

Tunarr: the more flexible scheduling starting point

Tunarr is a strong first option if you want control over how programming is arranged. Its documentation describes fixed-time schedules, sequential or random choices in slots, block shuffle, and cyclic shuffle. That gives you options ranging from programs assigned to particular times to a repeating or varied rotation. See the Tunarr overview and scheduling documentation.

ErsatzTV Legacy: consider it for its established workflow and client integrations

Give it access to your media paths

Tunarr’s Plex and Jellyfin source guides recommend making the underlying media paths accessible to Tunarr. The project says this can improve streaming performance and stability while reducing network activity. The same guides label library synchronization an alpha-only feature, so verify its status for the specific release you install rather than assuming it is a settled capability. See the Plex source guide and Jellyfin source guide.

Account for the project’s release status

Tunarr’s installation page describes the project as pre-release and distinguishes stable version tags from development builds. If you value a more predictable install, select the documented stable tag and review the release notes for that version. This is a status qualification, not a performance comparison; the project documentation does not establish that Tunarr is faster or more reliable than ErsatzTV.

What to check before setting up ErsatzTV Legacy

Plex setup requires Plex Pass

ErsatzTV’s Plex client guide says Plex Pass is required and that Plex clients directly support its MPEG-TS channel mode. Check the ErsatzTV Plex client guide before choosing this route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jellyfin uses playlist and guide-data integrations

The ErsatzTV Jellyfin instructions call for adding an M3U tuner and an XMLTV guide-data provider. Follow the ErsatzTV Jellyfin client guide for the integration details.

Legacy feature development is frozen

In a maintainer post titled “Unarchiving ErsatzTV Legacy,” Jason Dove said, “Feature development on ErsatzTV Legacy will remain frozen, and I do not plan to accept pull requests.” He also said security-related issues would be addressed while Legacy was integrated with the ErsatzTV Next transcoding engine. The same post describes ErsatzTV Next as intended to integrate with external scheduling tools; it does not establish Next as a like-for-like replacement for Legacy’s scheduler. Read the maintainer announcement for the stated project status.

How to choose

  • Start with Tunarr if fixed-time schedules, shuffle options, or a simulated tuner and M3U output match the way you want to watch.
  • Consider ErsatzTV Legacy if you rely on its client integrations or want its documented local-library media types, while accounting for frozen feature development.
  • Check source and client compatibility separately: a tool may read from a server but use a different path to deliver channels to the player.
  • Expect to manage a self-hosted service and its access to your media; neither option is simply a replacement media app you install without configuration.

These recommendations are based on documented features and integrations, not hands-on comparative testing. The project documentation reviewed does not provide a comparative benchmark for speed, reliability, channel capacity, or user satisfaction.
