Best Platforms for Developers to Publish Technical Articles

A practical guide to choosing where to publish technical articles, from developer communities to independent publications and newsletter-first platforms.

There is no single best place for every developer to publish technical articles. Choose a developer community such as Hashnode or DEV Community when context and community matter; consider Medium as a general publishing network; look to Ghost for a more independent publication; and consider Substack when email and paid subscriptions are central. The right fit depends on how you balance discovery, control, portability, monetization, and the work of running the publication.

Compare platforms by the job you need them to do

A platform’s features can help you narrow your options, but they do not establish how many readers your articles will reach or what they will earn. No reliable named statistics here support a reach ranking, so treat the choices below as categories to investigate, not a ranked list.

  • Discovery: Does the platform provide a community or network, or will you bring readers through your own site, mailing list, and other channels?
  • Identity and control: Can you use a custom domain and shape the design and structure of the publication?
  • Portability: What can you export, in what format, and can you take subscriber relationships with you?
  • Monetization: Can you charge for subscriptions, and what fees, revenue shares, or other restrictions apply?
  • Operating effort: How much setup, maintenance, and integration work are you willing to take on?
  • Writing workflow: Does the editor and publishing process suit code examples, long-form explanations, and the tools you already use?

Before committing, verify current domain, export, analytics, and monetization options directly with each platform. Details and terms can change.

Which type of platform fits your goal?

Hashnode or DEV Community for a developer-focused context

Hashnode and DEV Community (dev.to) are developer-oriented options. Consider them if you want your technical writing to sit in a setting built around developers. A daily.dev comparison of Hashnode, DEV Community, and Medium can help identify questions to compare, but it is secondary coverage, not proof of audience size or results: daily.dev’s platform comparison.

Do not assume the two services offer the same ownership, custom-domain, canonical URL, export, analytics, or monetization arrangements. Check those details on each platform before you build a publication around it.

Medium for a general publishing network

Medium is an option if you want to publish within a general writing network rather than assemble an independent publication. Its discovery mechanics and likely reach for a particular developer are not established here, so do not choose it on the assumption that it will guarantee readers, search visibility, or earnings.

Ghost’s comparison describes Medium as more constrained in control and customization than an independent Ghost publication. That is Ghost’s vendor perspective, not a neutral measurement: Ghost’s comparison with Medium.

Ghost for an independent publication

Ghost positions itself as an independent publishing platform with control over content, users, design, and integrations. It also describes a broader setup combining a website, newsletters, and memberships. These are Ghost’s product claims; assess whether that control is worth the setup and operating effort for your publication.

You can investigate managed hosting or self-hosting, but the best fit depends on your technical capacity and how much maintenance you want to own. Check current plan pricing, hosting requirements, and transaction costs before choosing: Ghost’s comparison with Substack.

Substack for a newsletter-led publication

Substack is worth considering when email is the center of your publishing workflow and you may charge for subscriptions. Its official features page says creators can keep their subscriber list, connect a domain, export data, and set subscription prices. It also describes RSS feeds, sitemaps, Google Analytics 4 integration, and paid-subscription tools: Substack’s features page.

Those are product-page claims, not a cost comparison. Review current fees and customization alongside alternatives before deciding whether Substack suits your business model.

Make a shortlist, then verify the details

  1. Start with the format: If you want a developer community, compare Hashnode and DEV Community. If you want a broad writing network, investigate Medium. If you want your own publication, assess Ghost. If email and paid subscriptions lead, investigate Substack.
  2. Decide how much control you need: Write down whether a custom domain, design flexibility, and control over the reader experience are essential or merely nice to have.
  3. Check the exit path: Confirm what content and subscriber data you can export, the formats available, and what can be used elsewhere. Do this before building an audience on a platform.
  4. Map the economics: Check current subscription features, fees, and restrictions, then consider whether you expect to earn through paid writing or another model. Do not rely on unverified earnings claims.
  5. Estimate the operating burden: Compare the simplicity of starting on a hosted service with the setup, integrations, and maintenance involved in running a more independent publication.
  6. Test the writing workflow: Try drafting a representative technical article, including its code examples and formatting needs, before moving your full publishing routine.

Choose the trade-off you can live with

A developer community, a general publishing network, independent publishing software, and a newsletter-first service solve different problems. Pick the platform whose discovery model and workflow match your goals, then verify its current ownership, export, customization, and monetization terms. No platform is a universal winner, and the available evidence does not justify promises about reach or earnings.
