For most Mini-LED TVs, start with the gaming input’s Game Mode or equivalent low-latency preset, then enable ALLM and VRR if your TV and console or PC support them. There is no single set of brightness, contrast, local-dimming, or tone-mapping values that works across every model: use guidance for your exact TV, and adjust for your room and image preferences.
Start with Game Mode, not someone else’s slider values
Game Mode is the practical starting point because it is the TV’s gaming preset for reducing processing delay or exposing gaming features. Its name and behavior vary by manufacturer, model, firmware, and input. It can also change which picture controls are available.

Settings calibrated for another television are not a universal recipe. RTINGS’ Adam Babcock says of the settings in his Samsung R85H calibration guide, “These settings are meant to provide a starting point; they’re not meant to be copied 1:1.” The guide’s settings were tested on a 65-inch R85H and are also stated as valid for certain sizes, with adjustments for viewing conditions and preference. Read the RTINGS Samsung R85H calibration guide.

Check the whole signal chain for your target resolution and refresh rate
A TV’s advertised refresh rate does not guarantee that every HDMI input, connected device, cable, or game can deliver the signal you want. Check the specifications and instructions for the exact TV and console or PC before changing picture settings.

- Choose the correct TV input. Use the HDMI port the manufacturer specifies for your target resolution and refresh rate. Samsung’s instructions for its 4K at 120 Hz feature direct users to a designated port.
- Verify the cable and both devices. The TV, source device, selected input, cable, and game or output mode all need to support the intended signal. For the documented Samsung 4K at 120 Hz setup, Samsung recommends a 2.1 HDMI cable. A cable cannot add capabilities missing from the TV, source, or input. See Samsung’s 4K at 120 Hz connection instructions.
- Confirm the source output. Check the console or PC display settings and the TV’s signal information or gaming menu, if available, to see whether the intended resolution and refresh rate are active.
Enable ALLM and VRR when your setup supports them
ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) can let a compatible source prompt the TV to switch to a low-latency mode. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) can help reduce screen tearing when supported by both the TV and source. These features are conditional: check the exact models, supported inputs, and VRR range, then confirm activation in the TV’s gaming menu or signal information if it provides that detail.
Product specifications illustrate why a model-specific check matters. TCL’s UK C805K page lists Game Master Pro 2.0, HDMI 2.1, ALLM, and 144 Hz VRR; Hisense USA lists a 48–144 Hz VRR range, FreeSync Premium Pro, ALLM, and 144 Hz Game Mode Pro for the U8N. These are manufacturer-listed features for those products, not guarantees about other Mini-LED TVs. TCL C805K UK specifications; Hisense U8N USA specifications.

Set HDR and local dimming for your model and room
Once the signal and gaming mode are correct, use your TV’s Game HDR guidance or model-specific calibration advice as a starting point. Adjust HDR brightness, tone mapping, local dimming, and other picture controls carefully to suit your room and preference. Mini-LED describes a display technology, not a shared calibration: local-dimming behavior, available controls, and brightness vary by model.
Do not copy a brightness, contrast, color-temperature, local-dimming, or tone-mapping value from another TV and assume it is right for yours. Nor is “High” local dimming or one tone-mapping option established as universally best. A brighter, more dramatic image may suit one viewer, while another may prefer a different HDR presentation or lower latency.

Check the signal path and mode before chasing picture sliders. Make sure the console or PC is outputting the format you expect, the TV is on the intended HDMI input, HDR is active when wanted, and Game Mode has not changed which controls are available.

- If the refresh rate or resolution is lower than expected, recheck the selected port, source output settings, cable, and support for the complete chain.
- If ALLM or VRR does not appear active, confirm that the TV, source, input, and current signal support the feature; menu behavior differs by model.
- If HDR or local-dimming controls are missing, check whether Game Mode or the current HDR signal changes the available options, then consult the instructions for your TV model.
Menu labels and behavior can vary by model, region, size, firmware, and connected device, so there is no single troubleshooting adjustment that can be promised for every Mini-LED TV.
What to compare when choosing between TVs
If you are evaluating models for gaming, compare the details that affect your actual setup rather than relying on the Mini-LED label alone:
Quick Recap
- Supported resolution and refresh rate on the specific HDMI input you will use.
- ALLM support and the VRR range, where listed.
- HDR formats supported by both the TV and your gaming device.
- Which HDR and local-dimming controls remain available in Game Mode.
- Whether you prioritize latency, a particular HDR presentation, brightness, or image processing.
