There is no verified universal “best” Phasmophobia preset: official sources explain some graphics and audio options, but do not publish a current full PC settings menu or controlled FPS results for individual settings. For clearer cues and smoother play, adjust one option at a time, check it in the same kind of scene, and keep the visibility and sound mix comfortable for your setup.
Start with the settings that affect visibility
Eye Adaption and Screen Space Global Illumination
Kinetic Games added Eye Adaption and Screen Space Global Illumination (SSGI) in the January 9, 2024 v0.9.4.0 update notes. Eye Adaption simulates eyes adjusting between bright and dark areas. SSGI simulates bounced lighting, making lighting and shadows look less dark. The developer provided three SSGI quality levels and warned that the effect may affect performance; it did not quantify the cost in frames per second.

If performance is troubling you, try lowering SSGI quality or turning off costly visual effects one at a time, then revisit a comparable area and assess both smoothness and visibility. That is a general troubleshooting method, not a tested Phasmophobia preset or a developer-recommended configuration.
Choose brightness for usable contrast
The same update increased ambient light and changed the brightness slider to a 0%–250% range. Kinetic Games noted that larger rooms and rooms with darker materials may intentionally appear darker. The documented range is not a recommendation to set brightness to its maximum. Pick a value that lets you navigate comfortably while retaining enough contrast to read the game’s lighting; there is no official or tested ideal number.

Set audio for useful spatial cues
Understand the vertical sound effects
Kinetic Games documents changes to sounds based on their vertical position: sounds one floor above are bass-boosted and muffled, while sounds one floor below are more muffled and quiet. Sounds two floors away receive stronger effects and volume reduction. These differences are part of how the game conveys where sound is coming from, so avoid compensating by indiscriminately raising every volume. Official materials do not specify a universal volume mix.
PlayStation: choose mono or 3D audio to suit your setup
Sony’s PlayStation product page lists individual volume controls, mono audio, and 3D audio. Mono sends the same audio to each speaker; 3D audio represents sounds as coming from around the player. These are distinct output approaches. Choose based on your listening equipment and accessibility needs rather than assuming one is best for everyone. These documented PlayStation features should not be taken as proof that PC exposes identical controls.

Check voice-chat devices if communication is unclear
If teammates cannot hear you or you cannot hear them, verify which input and output devices are selected in the game and in your platform’s audio settings, then follow current support instructions for that platform. Kinetic Games’ 2024 update notes mention virtual audio devices working with voice chat and a Steam Deck voice-recognition issue at that time; that historical issue is not evidence of a current Steam Deck problem.
Improve smoothness without guessing at FPS gains
The official sources available here do not establish current recommended PC presets, benchmark hardware, or measured FPS changes for individual settings. They also do not support a specific frame-rate target or a claim that a particular headset improves performance. Treat each graphics adjustment as a test on your own system: change one setting, replay a comparable situation, and keep the change only if the result is better without making visibility uncomfortable.

Kinetic Games’ historical optimization notes describe work on cameras, shadows, weather, UI, physics, audio, reflections, and texture and shader memory behavior, but do not provide reproducible setting-by-setting performance gains. Results can change as the game is updated, so consult the current Phasmophobia patch notes when troubleshooting after an update.

Do not assume a setting or control documented for one platform exists in the same form on another. For example, the PlayStation listing describes audio options, while Kinetic Games’ June 2026 roadmap said a Unity 6 move planned for October would bring stability updates and a new lighting system, and listed console Eye Adaptation as planned. That roadmap statement is not confirmation that the move has shipped or that those effects are now available. Check the latest release notes for the platform you play before relying on planned changes.

A practical adjustment order
- Make a baseline: note your current graphics, brightness, and audio choices, then play a representative area so you have something consistent to compare.
- Address performance first: if play feels uneven, lower SSGI quality or disable a demanding visual effect, changing only one option at a time.
- Recheck visibility: set brightness to a comfortable level that preserves useful contrast rather than automatically using the maximum.
- Listen for vertical cues: keep the game’s floor-based muffling and bass changes in mind while deciding whether the mix is clear.
- Check output and voice devices: confirm the selected input and output match your actual setup; on PlayStation, choose mono or 3D audio according to how you listen.
- Compare and keep only useful changes: revisit a similar situation after each adjustment, then check current patch notes if an update changes the result.
