The best website performance testing tool depends on what you need to learn. Start with Google PageSpeed Insights for a page-level report combining Lighthouse diagnostics with available real-user data. Use Lighthouse for focused, repeatable audits; WebPageTest for detailed, configurable visual tests; GTmetrix for reports and ongoing monitoring; and Grafana k6’s browser module for scripted journeys and automated thresholds. These tools measure different things, so compare them only under similar conditions.
Which website performance testing tool should you use?
| Tool | Best for | What it provides | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google PageSpeed Insights | A free first check of an individual URL | Lighthouse lab diagnostics plus Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data when sufficient observations are available; separate mobile and desktop analyses. Google explains the data sources and report. | Field data may be unavailable for a URL or shown at the origin level instead. The Lighthouse result is a simulation, not a record of your visitors’ experience. |
| Google Lighthouse | Focused diagnosis and repeatable audits | Performance and other page-quality audits, available in DevTools, PageSpeed Insights, the command line, and Node.js workflows. See Lighthouse’s documented entry points. | A simulated run without user interaction cannot directly measure INP. |
| WebPageTest | Configurable synthetic tests and visual diagnosis | Browser and location configuration, Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals reporting, and visual comparisons. See WebPageTest. | Match test location and profile when comparing results with another service. Available features can depend on the plan. |
| GTmetrix | Readable reports and recurring monitoring | Lighthouse-powered reports, CrUX metrics, waterfalls, visual load playback, scheduled monitoring and alerts. Extra locations and API access may depend on the plan. See GTmetrix’s feature details. | Its grade and structure metrics are product-specific, not universal performance standards. |
| Grafana k6 browser module | Automated browser journeys and thresholds | Scripted browser checks can emit LCP, INP and CLS metrics and apply thresholds. See k6 browser metrics documentation. | Results depend on the script, navigation behavior, aggregation and version; this is a different workflow from checking one URL. |
If you need to assess many simultaneous users or server capacity, a one-page audit is not enough: design a workload and load-testing plan as well. Browser journey tests and URL audits answer different questions.

Lab tests, field data and what the scores mean
Lab data helps diagnose causes
A lab test simulates a page load under a defined set of conditions. Lighthouse can help identify likely bottlenecks and compare changes in a controlled workflow. But a good Lighthouse score does not guarantee a good experience for real visitors: simulated conditions cannot represent every device, network, location or interaction.
Field data describes sampled visitors
PageSpeed Insights can show CrUX field data based on real Chrome users when enough observations are available. If there are not enough observations for the exact URL, the report may omit URL-level data or use aggregated origin-level data. Read the report’s scope before treating its field metrics as specific to one page.
#1 Best Overall
Lab and field measurements are complementary, not interchangeable: use the lab to investigate possible causes and field data to understand the experience represented by its sampled users. Google’s lab-versus-field explanation discusses the distinction.
How to interpret Core Web Vitals
Google’s current Core Web Vitals are LCP, INP and CLS. The good thresholds below come from Google’s guidance last updated May 7, 2025; they are assessment thresholds, not promises about a particular site. See the threshold guidance.
| Metric | What it reflects | Good threshold |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | How quickly the largest visible content element renders | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP | Responsiveness to user interaction | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS | Unexpected visual movement | 0.1 or less |
For field assessment, use the 75th percentile, split between mobile and desktop, rather than an average or one test run. A page or site passes the Core Web Vitals assessment when the 75th-percentile values for all three metrics are in the good range, subject to Google’s data-availability rules.

- Choose the question first. For a single-page overview, begin with PageSpeed Insights. For a repeatable diagnostic audit, use Lighthouse. Choose WebPageTest for configurable locations and visual load detail, GTmetrix for recurring reports and alerts, or k6 for an automated user journey.
- Keep conditions comparable. When comparing results, align device or browser profile, network, location and cache state as closely as the tools allow. Note any differences that cannot be matched.
- Run again when a result surprises you. Measurements vary between runs. Repeated tests help distinguish a persistent issue from run-to-run variation; do not draw a conclusion from a single unexpected score.
- Read metrics, not just grades. Check which measurements and conditions a report uses. A vendor’s composite grade is not a universal standard.
- Check field evidence separately. Review whether PageSpeed Insights shows URL-level or origin-level CrUX data and whether the mobile or desktop view matches the audience you are investigating.
- Use the right scale of test. A page audit measures a page load. For a workflow, script the browser journey. For concurrent-user or server-capacity questions, plan a workload test in addition to page audits.
Why PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix show different scores
Different scores do not necessarily mean one tool is wrong. The tests may use different locations, browser or device profiles, network conditions, cache states, measurement methods or run conditions. GTmetrix also presents product-specific grades and structure metrics, while PageSpeed Insights separates Lighthouse lab diagnostics from available CrUX field data.

To make a useful comparison, align the test conditions as closely as possible, compare the underlying measurements rather than only the headline grade, and repeat runs that appear inconsistent. A lab score should not be compared directly with real-user field data as though they were the same kind of evidence.
Choosing a tool for common jobs
Checking one page before or after a change
Use PageSpeed Insights for an accessible overview of lab diagnostics and any available real-user data. If you need to investigate a specific issue or repeat the same kind of audit in a development workflow, use Lighthouse.
Investigating where a page-load delay occurs
Use WebPageTest when you need configurable test conditions and visual comparisons, or GTmetrix when its report, waterfall, visual playback or monitoring features fit the task. Interpret both in light of their test settings rather than treating a score as directly comparable across services.

Watching a user journey in automation
Use the k6 browser module when the performance question belongs inside a scripted browser workflow or an automated threshold check. Its documented browser metrics include LCP, INP and CLS; the result depends on how the journey is scripted and how samples are aggregated.

Testing concurrent traffic
Do not rely on a single-page audit to estimate how a server behaves under many simultaneous users. Define a workload that represents the traffic and endpoints you care about, and use a load-testing approach alongside page-level diagnostics.

If your task is to capture website screenshots rather than measure performance metrics, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is not a substitute for PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, WebPageTest, GTmetrix or k6 when you need performance measurements. Its one-call API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; features include full-page capture, device and viewport settings, custom waits, CSS and JavaScript, and bulk capture.
Or skip the browser setup
Make one GET request to capture a URL. Replace the example URL with the page you want, and replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key. The API returns the image file in the response. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting performance test results
PageSpeed Insights shows no field data
CrUX field data requires sufficient observations. If a URL does not have enough, URL-level data may be absent or the report may show origin-level data instead. Use the Lighthouse lab diagnostics for that page, and do not describe origin data as a measurement of that exact URL.
A Lighthouse run does not report INP
INP requires user input. A simulated Lighthouse run without interaction cannot directly measure it. Use field data when available or a browser workflow that includes relevant interactions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA score changes between runs
Test conditions and run variability can affect measurements. Check whether location, device, network or cache differed, then repeat the test under matched conditions before deciding that a change is persistent.
Two services disagree
Compare the test profile and underlying metrics, not only composite grades. Check whether one result is lab data and the other is field data, and whether the selected location, device, network and cache state are comparable.
A page audit does not answer a traffic-capacity question
A single page load is not a concurrency test. Use a workload and load-testing plan for simultaneous-user and server-behavior questions; retain page-level tools for diagnosing individual page loads.
