The right PC controller depends on what you play and what matters most: an easy all-rounder, a lower-cost option, premium controls, or Steam-focused features. TechRadar’s current roundup names the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 its best overall pick, the 8BitDo Pro 3 its budget choice, the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro its premium option, and Valve’s Steam Controller (2026) its most feature-rich pick. Those are the outlet’s judgments, not universal rankings.

Which PC controller should you choose?

Priority Controller What stands out Trade-offs
Best all-rounder, according to TechRadar 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller 2.4GHz, Bluetooth and USB-C wired connections; remappable controls; TMR thumbsticks; RGB; included charging dock. TechRadar reports roughly 10–15 hours of battery life and flags the RGB lighting and endurance as drawbacks.
Budget pick, according to TechRadar 8BitDo Pro 3 TMR sticks, customization, wireless connectivity and a charging dock. TechRadar’s reviewer found the center Start and Select buttons crowded. It is not compatible with Xbox or PlayStation consoles and has no 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Premium pick, according to TechRadar Razer Wolverine V3 Pro TechRadar praises its overall controller experience. The outlet flags its high price and battery life of around 12 hours.
Steam-focused features, according to TechRadar Valve Steam Controller (2026) TMR sticks, gyro, two touchpads and Steam Input customization. PC Gamer says the touchpads can help with desktop navigation or looking around in games. TechRadar notes its PC focus and lack of an audio jack. PC Gamer reported a launch price of $99/€99/£85/A$149; check the current price in your region. PC Gamer also reported Valve’s plan for official spare parts through iFixit after launch, which does not confirm current availability.

For the Ultimate 2, 8BitDo lists Windows 10 (1903) and above and SteamOS 3.7.13 and above, with 2.4G and wired connections on PC. Its product page also describes the dock and customization software. Treat latency and polling-rate figures there as manufacturer test claims rather than independent results: 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller.

Should you buy a PC controller?

A controller is most worthwhile if you expect to use it regularly. It can be particularly useful for racing and fighting games, and some players prefer a gamepad for platformers or other games designed around analog sticks and triggers. If you mostly play genres or specific titles that feel better with a mouse and keyboard, a dedicated controller may see less use. TechRadar says its selections weigh build quality, performance, features, price, longevity and value, and reports testing across shooters, fighters, racing games and platformers.

Can you use a Nintendo Switch or PS5 controller on PC?

Yes, Switch Pro and PS5 DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers can be used on PC, according to TechRadar. Steam Input’s device documentation lists PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro, PlayStation 3 and DirectInput gamepads among supported device types. This is not a guarantee that every controller works in every game or launcher without setup; check the game’s support and connection instructions. DualSense features such as haptics and adaptive triggers are available only in compatible titles. See Valve’s Steam Input device documentation and TechRadar’s PC controller setup guidance.

What should you compare before choosing?

  • Operating system, launcher and console compatibility: Check support for your PC operating system and the games or launcher you use. Steam Input support is useful, but does not promise plug-and-play behavior in every title.
  • Connection: Wired USB-C, Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless are not interchangeable setup choices. Pick a controller that supports the connection you want and verify which modes work with your platform.
  • Sticks and triggers: Consider the feel and control you want. TMR sticks are listed on several picks here, but the technology alone does not determine grip, layout or whether a pad suits your games.
  • Extra controls: Remapping, paddles, gyro and touchpads can add options, especially if you want to tailor controls or navigate outside games. They matter less if you prefer a straightforward layout.
  • Grip, layout and weight: Button placement and comfort are personal. If possible, try the controller or check return terms; a feature list cannot tell you whether the shape fits your hands.
  • Battery and charging: Compare reported endurance with your play sessions and note whether a dock is included. Battery figures in reviews are estimates, not a guarantee for every use pattern.
  • Price and value: Check the live price where you live and weigh it against the features you will actually use. A premium model is not automatically the best fit.
