Best Password Managers for Linux in 2026: Choose by How You Work

The best password manager for Linux depends on whether you want a local encrypted file, account-based sync, browser tools or CLI access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best password manager for every Linux user. Choose KeePassXC if you want a local encrypted database and are willing to manage its backups and synchronization. Choose 1Password if you want a commercial Linux app, browser features, encrypted sync and a command-line tool. Bitwarden’s CLI is a documented option for terminal-based vault management. Proton Pass is also worth checking, but the available official details do not support a close Linux-feature or plan comparison.

The right choice depends less on the word “Linux” than on where your vault lives, how it reaches your other devices, and whether you need desktop, browser or terminal access.

Compare Linux password managers by workflow

Option Linux workflow established by official documentation Storage and sync Best fit
KeePassXC Native Linux application; official project materials also document command-line use. An encrypted local database file. You choose whether and how to sync it elsewhere. People who want local-vault control and are prepared to handle synchronization and backups.
1Password Linux app, browser workflows and command-line tool are documented. Membership service with encrypted synchronization. People who want an account-based, cross-device workflow with browser and CLI access.
Bitwarden CLI Linux command-line client, with native executable, npm, Snap and Flatpak installation routes documented. Not established in sufficient detail for comparison here. People seeking command-line vault access; check current official pages for desktop, sync and plan details.
Proton Pass Official product and security pages are available, but the Linux packaging and feature details needed for a close comparison are not established here. Not established in sufficient detail for comparison here. A contender to investigate, rather than a ranked recommendation on the available details.

When KeePassXC is the better fit

KeePassXC stores passwords in an encrypted database file on your device rather than in a remote service operated by the project. You can put that file in a synchronization folder of your choice, but that choice makes sync and backup your responsibility. Decide how you will keep the database available on each device and recover it if a device or file is lost before relying on it as your only copy.

The project describes KeePassXC as free and open source, with native Linux support. Its documentation describes AES-256 or Twofish encryption, configurable key transformations, and optional key files or a YubiKey. Those are implementation details, not a guarantee that any software is invulnerable.

The project says version 2.7.9 received an ANSSI Security Visa after passing the agency’s First-level Security Certification (CSPN). That claim applies to that version; it is not a certification of every release or proof of total safety. KeePassXC’s documentation also notes that audits cover a particular code snapshot and can miss flaws.

Keep the database and backup plan in view

  • Choose a synchronization method and a separate recovery or backup plan that you can maintain.
  • If you store a TOTP secret in the same database as its password, the two factors are less meaningfully separated. KeePassXC suggests a separate database and password when maximizing that separation matters.

Check stable versus beta features

KeePassXC reported version 2.7.12 on 2026-03-10 and version 2.8.0-beta1 on 2026-09-23. The project listed Auto-Type on Wayland and Polkit quick unlock on Linux among the beta’s planned features. Treat those as beta features, not stable-release capabilities.

When 1Password makes sense on Linux

1Password’s official Linux support page documents an app and browser workflows that include password filling, password generation and one-time-password filling. It also describes multiple vaults and a command-line tool for managing vaults and items. The page says a membership is required. Check the current official plan page for pricing and limits rather than relying on an old quoted price.

This is the more direct fit if you prefer an account-based service with encrypted sync across devices instead of choosing and maintaining synchronization for a local database.

What Bitwarden’s Linux CLI supports

Bitwarden’s official CLI documentation confirms Linux support and vault access and management commands. It lists installation through a native executable, npm, Snap or Flatpak. The documentation cautions that installing through npm on Linux may require build-essential.

This evidence supports Bitwarden as a terminal-oriented candidate, but it does not establish a full comparison of its Linux desktop app, synchronization, pricing or plan limits. Check the current official product and plan pages against the features you need before choosing it.

How to evaluate Proton Pass

Proton Pass belongs on a Linux shortlist, but the official product and security pages available here do not establish enough about Linux packaging, features or current plan limits to rank it against the other options. Verify those details on Proton Pass’s product page and its security-model page before making a decision.

Choose with these questions

  1. Do you want to manage a local file or use an account-based service? KeePassXC puts the database and its chosen synchronization method in your hands; 1Password documents a membership-based encrypted-sync workflow.
  2. How will you use the vault on Linux? If browser filling, a desktop app or a terminal interface is essential, verify that exact workflow on the current official documentation for your preferred option.
  3. Who will handle synchronization and recovery? With KeePassXC, plan both yourself. For account-based options, review the official service documentation and current plan details.
  4. Are you relying on a feature still in beta? Check release status before choosing a manager for a workflow that depends on it.
