For most new VPS deployments, WireGuard is the best OpenVPN alternative. Run it directly when you have a small, stable group of peers and are comfortable maintaining keys, routes and endpoint addresses. Choose Headscale when you want a self-hosted, Tailscale-compatible coordination plane. Choose NetBird when you need a broader, web-managed self-hosted platform with enrollment and policy controls. Choose SoftEther only when multi-protocol or legacy-device compatibility is more important than a modern WireGuard mesh.
These are not four equivalent products. WireGuard is the encrypted tunnel protocol; Headscale and NetBird add coordination, identity, discovery and policy layers around WireGuard. SoftEther is a separate VPN server with support for several protocols. The right choice depends more on operations and client requirements than on a single throughput number—authoritative sources do not provide a comparable 2026 benchmark set for CPU use, speed, pricing or user limits.

Choose in 60 seconds
Use this decision path before comparing features:
- Need the smallest, most transparent stack? Deploy direct WireGuard.
- Want a Tailscale-style client experience but control the coordination service yourself? Deploy Headscale with compatible clients.
- Need centralized enrollment, a management service and policy administration in a self-hosted package? Evaluate NetBird.
- Must support several VPN protocols or older equipment that cannot use WireGuard? Consider SoftEther.
If you are unsure, start with direct WireGuard for a few stable peers. Move to a control-plane product when manual peer files, changing endpoints, policy changes or user onboarding become the bottleneck.
What an “OpenVPN alternative” means here
OpenVPN combines an encrypted tunnel with a server-and-client operating model. The alternatives in this guide split those responsibilities differently.

WireGuard is the tunnel layer
WireGuard is an open-source network tunneling protocol that creates encrypted communication channels. Tailscale’s documentation describes it as designed to replace protocols such as OpenVPN and IPsec with a simpler, lighter-weight alternative. A direct deployment gives you the protocol and its key-based peer model, but not a hosted directory, automatic enrollment service or policy console.
Headscale is a self-hosted coordination layer
Headscale is a self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale control plane. It uses the WireGuard data plane while providing the coordination functions needed to register devices, distribute peer information and present a more managed client experience. You operate the coordination service instead of relying on a hosted control-plane provider.
NetBird is a self-hostable management platform
NetBird’s documentation describes authorized clients joining a management service and then forming a mesh through encrypted, point-to-point WireGuard tunnels. Its management service can be self-hosted, so the operator runs both the service that authorizes and coordinates devices and the surrounding VPS operations.

SoftEther is a VPN server designed for protocol breadth. It belongs in this comparison when you have legacy clients, appliances or an integration that requires protocols beyond WireGuard. For a new, WireGuard-oriented VPS mesh, it is usually a compatibility decision rather than the default minimal stack.

WireGuard, Headscale, NetBird and SoftEther compared
| Option | Tunnel technology | Who operates the control plane | Peer discovery and NAT traversal | Relay behavior | Identity and policy | Onboarding | Protocol and legacy compatibility | VPS and maintenance profile | Typical topology |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct WireGuard | WireGuard | You operate everything | Manual endpoints, keys and allowed IPs; no built-in coordination layer | Direct paths unless you add a separate relay or gateway | Cryptographic keys and configuration files; policy is expressed through peer and route configuration | Install WireGuard on every device and distribute a peer configuration | WireGuard clients only | Small, transparent stack; you maintain keys, routes, firewall rules and endpoint changes | Point-to-point or routed site links |
| Headscale | WireGuard through Tailscale-compatible clients | You operate the Headscale service | Central coordination and the client ecosystem add discovery and NAT-traversal capabilities compared with hand-written peer files | Direct connection when possible; relay or transport behavior depends on the compatible client/control-plane deployment | Central device identity and policy controls supplied by the control-plane model | Enroll clients with the self-hosted coordination service instead of exchanging every peer file manually | WireGuard-based clients; not a general multi-protocol server | More services to update, secure and back up than direct WireGuard | Point-to-point mesh with centrally coordinated peers |
| NetBird | Encrypted point-to-point WireGuard tunnels | You operate the NetBird management service | Authorized clients receive coordination from the management service; exact path behavior depends on deployment | Direct peer tunnels are the documented model; relay behavior is deployment-dependent | Central enrollment and management policies | Install a client, authorize it through the management service and apply organization policies | WireGuard-oriented; not chosen for broad legacy protocol support | Integrated platform, but more components and lifecycle work than a single WireGuard interface | Managed point-to-point mesh, with routed or gateway patterns where needed |
| SoftEther | SoftEther’s multi-protocol VPN server | You operate the VPN server and its administration | Server-centric; behavior varies with protocol and topology | Server or gateway paths are central to the design | Server-side authentication and access controls vary by configuration | Install a compatible client or configure the legacy device for the selected protocol | Strongest fit when several protocols or older devices must coexist | Broader compatibility can mean a larger configuration and patching surface | Gateway-centric or routed VPN connections |
The table’s most important distinction is operational: direct WireGuard makes you the control plane; Headscale and NetBird move coordination and policy into services you must run; SoftEther trades WireGuard’s narrow, modern focus for protocol breadth.
Direct WireGuard: the minimal self-hosted baseline
When it is the best choice
- There are only a few users, servers or sites.
- Peers have stable addresses or you can update endpoints when they change.
- You want a small attack surface and configurations that can be inspected as text.
- You are comfortable handling key generation, distribution, rotation, routing and firewall changes.
How the deployment works
- Prepare the VPS. Choose a provider plan with a stable public endpoint, firewall controls and enough bandwidth for the workload. Enable IPv6 when your clients or routes require it, and arrange snapshots or another backup method.
- Install WireGuard on the VPS and each peer. Every participating device needs a WireGuard implementation; this is not a clientless service.
- Generate a key pair for each device. Keep private keys on their devices and treat public keys as the identifiers exchanged with peers.
- Create the VPS interface configuration. Assign the VPN address space, define the listening port, and add each peer with its public key and allowed IPs.
- Create the corresponding client configurations. Each client needs the VPS public key, the VPN address, an endpoint for reaching the VPS and allowed-IP rules that express which traffic should use the tunnel.
- Open only the required firewall paths. Permit the WireGuard transport on the VPS firewall and host firewall, then restrict administration ports to the sources you actually need.
- Enable forwarding and routes when the VPS is a gateway. A tunnel that only reaches the VPS itself needs less routing than one that carries traffic to a private subnet or the public internet. Add forwarding and return routes deliberately; otherwise the handshake can succeed while application traffic fails.
- Bring up one peer and verify the handshake. Confirm that the peer sees a recent handshake, receives the expected tunnel address and can reach the intended destination before adding more devices.
- Document and rotate. Record which key belongs to which device, which networks each peer may reach and when keys were issued. Replace keys when devices are lost, decommissioned or transferred.
What you must maintain yourself
- Endpoint changes: mobile clients and residential connections can change address. Update the peer endpoint or use a stable DNS name that you operate.
- Allowed IPs and routes: these are both routing instructions and an important part of the access boundary. A broad range can expose more than intended.
- Key lifecycle: there is no central user directory in a plain deployment. Removing a peer means removing its key and any associated routes.
- Configuration distribution: peer files contain sensitive material. Transfer and store them as secrets, not as ordinary public documentation.
- Observability: monitor handshakes, interface status, firewall logs and route tables. A connected tunnel does not prove that every application path works.
Where direct WireGuard becomes inconvenient
Each additional peer increases the number of relationships you must describe and update. The friction appears when people join or leave, endpoints move frequently, several private networks overlap, or different groups need different access policies. At that point, a coordination service can reduce repetitive configuration even though it adds services to operate.
Headscale: self-hosted coordination for compatible clients
What Headscale changes
Headscale keeps WireGuard as the encrypted data plane but replaces hand-maintained peer discovery with a control-plane service you run. Clients register with that service, receive coordination information and can present a more consistent experience across laptops, servers and mobile devices than manually copying peer files.

- Provision a dedicated service endpoint. Give the coordination service a stable public name, restrict inbound ports with the VPS firewall and terminate transport security according to the client’s requirements.
- Install and configure Headscale. Set its server identity, address ranges, storage and policy model. Keep the service configuration and its database in the backup set.
- Define users, namespaces or equivalent administrative boundaries. Match these to the people or teams that should be able to enroll devices and reach one another.
- Enroll a test client. Use the compatible client’s login or registration flow against your self-hosted coordination endpoint, then confirm that the device appears with the expected identity.
- Apply access policy before broad rollout. Start with the smallest set of permitted device and subnet relationships. Test both an allowed connection and a deliberately denied one.
- Add subnet routers or gateways only when needed. A mesh peer can reach another enrolled peer directly; reaching an otherwise private LAN requires a deliberately configured routed device and return paths.
- Back up the control-plane state and document recovery. A lost coordination database can turn a working data plane into an enrollment and policy-recovery project.
Headscale trade-offs
- Less peer-file work: enrollment and discovery are centralized instead of being repeated for every pair.
- More control-plane responsibility: the service, its storage, transport security and updates are now production dependencies.
- Not a new encryption protocol: the underlying tunnel remains WireGuard; Headscale changes coordination and administration.
- Client compatibility matters: confirm that every operating system and device type you plan to enroll supports the compatible client and the features you intend to use.
NetBird: an integrated self-hosted management stack
What NetBird adds
NetBird documents a model in which authorized clients connect to a management service and then form a mesh through encrypted point-to-point WireGuard tunnels. The management service can be self-hosted, giving you centralized enrollment and policy administration while retaining WireGuard tunnels between authorized machines.

NetBird deployment sequence
- Plan the service components. Treat the management service, its data store and any supporting components as a small application platform rather than as one VPN interface.
- Assign a stable public endpoint and firewall policy. Expose only the ports required by the management and connection model, and place administrative interfaces behind restricted access.
- Deploy the management service and persistent storage. Keep configuration, identity data and certificates in backups that you can restore on a replacement VPS.
- Set the organization’s enrollment and policy defaults. Decide who may authorize a device, which groups exist and which networks each group can reach.
- Install the NetBird client on a test machine. Authorize it through the self-hosted management service and verify that its identity and assigned policies are correct.
- Enroll a second machine and test the mesh. Confirm the encrypted peer path, name or address resolution as applicable, and the exact routes the policy permits.
- Expand in stages. Add users, servers and routed networks only after documenting ownership, revocation and incident-response procedures.
- Patch and back up the whole stack. The management service is part of the security boundary; update it, monitor it and rehearse restoration rather than treating it as disposable setup software.
When NetBird is worth the extra components
NetBird is a strong fit when onboarding and policy changes happen often enough that hand-written WireGuard configurations are a recurring operational cost. It is less attractive when you only need one or two stable links and do not want to run a management platform. Its direct-tunnel architecture also means that successful service enrollment and successful application connectivity are separate checks: verify both.
SoftEther: choose it for protocol and legacy requirements
Why it is different
SoftEther is not simply WireGuard with another dashboard. It is a multi-protocol VPN server, so its value is the ability to accommodate clients and integrations that cannot use a WireGuard-based mesh. That can include older operating systems, appliances or environments standardized on another VPN protocol.
SoftEther decision checklist
- List every client and appliance that must connect, including versions that cannot install a modern WireGuard client.
- Identify the protocol each one requires and whether a single SoftEther server can satisfy those requirements without weakening segmentation.
- Design authentication, virtual hubs, routes and firewall boundaries before exposing the service publicly.
- Test each protocol path separately; compatibility at login does not prove that routing and name resolution are correct.
- Plan updates and backups for the server configuration and its authentication data.
If all of your devices support WireGuard and you do not need protocol translation, SoftEther’s broader surface can be unnecessary complexity. Use it when compatibility is a requirement, not merely because it offers more protocol choices.

Network and provider requirements
- Stable public reachability: a known public endpoint simplifies client configuration and service enrollment.
- Firewall controls: you need both provider-level controls and a host firewall so that VPN transport and administration are separated.
- IPv6 where required: include it when clients, private networks or your address plan depend on IPv6. Do not assume IPv4-only behavior will work unchanged.
- Snapshots or tested backups: protect WireGuard configuration and keys, or the Headscale and NetBird control-plane state, as well as SoftEther’s server configuration.
- Sufficient bandwidth: size the VPS for the traffic you will carry. The available sources do not establish a universal CPU, RAM or throughput minimum, so any fixed number would be misleading.
- Administrative access: use a separate, restricted path for management, apply updates promptly and log authentication and configuration changes.
Do not confuse a control plane with a traffic gateway
A coordination service can tell peers how to find one another without carrying every byte of application traffic. Direct WireGuard similarly sends traffic between configured peers. If you need internet egress, access to a private LAN or a site-to-site route, designate a gateway or subnet router, enable forwarding and verify return routes. This distinction affects bandwidth, firewall design and failure impact.
Security and operations checklist
- Minimize exposure: publish only VPN and required service ports; keep dashboards and SSH restricted.
- Separate identities: do not reuse a private key or enrollment identity across devices.
- Revoke quickly: remove lost devices, former users and retired servers from the peer or management system immediately.
- Use least-privilege routes: advertise only the subnets a peer needs.
- Back up secrets safely: encrypt backups and limit who can restore them.
- Test restoration: a snapshot that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Monitor both layers: check tunnel handshakes or peer status and also test real services such as DNS, SSH or HTTP through the intended route.
- Plan for endpoint failure: keep an alternate administrative path to the VPS so a bad firewall or route change does not lock you out.
Common failure modes and fixes
The handshake never appears
Check that the client is using the correct public key, endpoint and transport port; confirm provider and host firewalls; and verify that the VPS service is listening on the expected interface. For a control-plane product, verify enrollment and service reachability before debugging the peer tunnel.
The handshake works but applications time out
Inspect allowed IPs, forwarding, route tables and return routes. A cryptographically established tunnel does not automatically create a path to another private subnet or provide internet NAT.
Only one side can initiate traffic
Review endpoint reachability and the client’s behavior behind NAT. Direct WireGuard requires you to account for changing endpoints. A coordination layer can reduce this manual work, but it still needs reachable service endpoints and correctly applied policy.
Best Value
New devices cannot enroll after a VPS change
Confirm that the coordination service’s public name, certificates, persistent data and firewall rules survived the migration. Restore the control-plane state before creating new identities so existing devices do not diverge.
A legacy device cannot connect
Determine whether it supports WireGuard at all. If it requires another protocol, direct WireGuard, Headscale and NetBird are the wrong compatibility layer; evaluate SoftEther or a separate gateway designed for that protocol.
Hosted control planes versus self-hosting
A hosted Tailscale service is useful context because it demonstrates the client experience that Headscale seeks to provide while leaving the coordination service under your administration. It is not the same operational model as self-hosting: with a hosted service, the provider operates the control plane; with Headscale or NetBird, you operate service availability, updates, storage, backups and incident response. Direct WireGuard removes that control-plane dependency but returns all peer administration to you.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which alternative should you deploy?
Pick direct WireGuard when
You have a small, stable topology, value inspectable configuration and can handle manual key and route changes. It is the clearest baseline for a single VPS, a few administrators or a site-to-site link.
Pick Headscale when
You want a self-hosted coordination service compatible with a Tailscale-style client workflow and are prepared to maintain that service. It is the middle ground between raw peer files and a larger management platform.
Pick NetBird when
You need centralized enrollment and policy management in a self-hostable package, and the benefit of an integrated platform outweighs the additional components and upgrade work.
Pick SoftEther when
Protocol diversity or legacy hardware is non-negotiable. Its broader compatibility is the reason to accept a more server-centric and potentially more complex deployment.
