Best OpenClaw Hosting for Private AI Workflows: VPS, Home Server, or Laptop?

A VPS is the practical default for an always-on OpenClaw Gateway, while local hosting suits direct file access and testing. Privacy depends on model and chat services as well as where the Gateway runs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an OpenClaw Gateway that should stay available around the clock, a Linux VPS or cloud VM is the practical default if you can manage remote access, updates, and backups. Choose a local computer or Raspberry Pi instead when direct access to local files, hardware ownership, or a low-friction test matters more than uninterrupted availability. Neither location makes an AI workflow private by itself: model and messaging services still receive the traffic sent to them.

Listed first: Antihost

For an always-on Gateway, Antihost is listed first here. Its self-managed Linux VPS runs on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage and full root access, from 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB of RAM, and it lists a one-click OpenClaw image. Regions are USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine, and there is a 14-day free trial; see the current plans. Because it is self-managed, you still handle SSH access, updates, and backups yourself, as described below.

Is there an officially recommended best OpenClaw host?

No. OpenClaw documents deployment routes, not a ranked comparison of providers. Its Linux server guide says the Gateway can run on a Linux server or cloud VPS; its deployment options include Azure, Daytona, DigitalOcean, exe.dev, Fly.io, GCP, Hetzner, Hostinger, Northflank, Oracle Cloud, Railway, Render, Raspberry Pi, Upstash Box, and AWS EC2 or Lightsail. That list shows where deployment guidance exists, not which host is fastest, cheapest, safest, or best supported.

Choose among providers by checking the current plan and region you need, how you will administer the machine, and whether you can keep the Gateway isolated behind a private access method. The official material does not establish comparable prices, uptime guarantees, data-center locations, or performance benchmarks for these providers, so those are details to verify directly before choosing a plan.

Should I run the Gateway on my laptop or a VPS?

OpenClaw’s hosting FAQ frames the choice simply: “Want 24/7 reliability? Use a VPS. Want the lowest friction and you are OK with sleep/restarts? Run it locally.” The practical difference is whether you need a continuously reachable Gateway or value local access and simplicity more.

Option Best fit Availability and access Administration
VPS or cloud VM Always-on workflows and a stable network connection Does not depend on your laptop staying awake; Gateway state and workspace live on the server Typically headless; use SSH or a private access route for administration
Laptop or personal computer Testing, active-use workflows, and direct access to local files Can pause when the device sleeps, loses its network connection, or restarts for updates No server rental, but the computer must remain available when workflows need it
Dedicated home machine, including Raspberry Pi-class hardware Owning the hardware while keeping a dedicated Gateway available at home Runs at home; availability depends on that machine and home network remaining on You maintain the device and its network access

A dedicated machine is not mandatory. The FAQ presents a dedicated VPS, Mac mini, or Raspberry Pi as options for reliability and isolation, while a shared personal computer can suit testing and active use. A VPS shifts the Gateway’s state and workspace onto a remote server; local hosting keeps the Gateway close to files on that computer.

How much RAM and storage does OpenClaw need?

OpenClaw’s FAQ gives an absolute VPS minimum of 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, and approximately 500 MB of disk. It recommends 1–2 vCPU and 2 GB or more RAM as a headroom baseline. Treat the minimum as a documented floor, not a promise that every automation will run smoothly on it. Node tools and browser automation can consume substantial resources; the actual workload should guide sizing.

For Linux, OpenClaw identifies Ubuntu LTS or another modern Debian/Ubuntu system as the best-tested path. If a workload uses browser automation, media processing, or several channels and tools, leave room beyond the minimum rather than assuming the baseline guarantees comfortable operation.

Can I self-host OpenClaw privately?

You can host the Gateway on your own machine or server, but “self-hosted” describes where the Gateway runs—not necessarily where all processing and data handling happen. OpenClaw says configured model-provider and chat-platform traffic still goes to those services. If you choose a hosted model or connect messaging platforms, data sent through those integrations leaves the host for the relevant provider or platform. OpenClaw also supports local models as an option for keeping model inference on the device; that choice does not, on its own, make connected chat services local.

Before calling a workflow private, identify where inference runs, which platforms receive messages or files, and what accounts and credentials the Gateway can access. Hosting locally can provide direct access to local files, while a VPS relocates the Gateway state and workspace to the server; neither choice alone determines the full data path.

Is a VPS safer than running OpenClaw at home?

Not automatically. A VPS can be easier to keep separate from personal accounts and home devices, but it also needs careful remote-access and server administration. A home computer may be simpler to reach locally, but its exposure depends on its network configuration and the accounts available to the runtime. Security comes from how the Gateway is exposed, isolated, updated, and backed up—not just whether it sits in a data center.

Keep remote access private

OpenClaw’s Linux server guide states: “Secure default: keep the Gateway on loopback and access it via SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve.” If you bind the Gateway to a LAN or tailnet, the guide requires a shared secret unless authentication is delegated to a trusted proxy. Avoid exposing the Gateway publicly without an appropriate, documented access-control design.

Harden and maintain the host

  • Harden the server before installing OpenClaw, and keep operating-system and application updates in your maintenance routine.
  • Back up Gateway state and the workspace regularly; on a VPS, both belong to the server.
  • If using tailnet-only access, the Linux server guide recommends installing Tailscale first, verifying a second SSH session through that path, and then restricting public SSH.

For a more structured deployment, OpenClaw’s Ansible overview describes a layered pattern using a firewall, VPN, Docker isolation, and systemd hardening with an unprivileged account. It is a documented option for operators comfortable managing that setup, rather than a requirement for every installation.

Separate users who do not share a trust boundary

OpenClaw says a shared company Gateway is appropriate when its users belong to the same trust boundary. If users may be adversarial to one another, separate them by Gateway, host, or operating-system user. For a business-only agent, use a dedicated runtime and OS account; avoid logging that runtime into personal Apple or Google accounts, personal browser profiles, or personal password managers.

How to choose a hosting path

  1. Decide how continuous access must be. Choose a VPS or cloud VM if workflows need a stable, always-on Gateway. Choose local hosting if pauses during sleep, network loss, or updates are acceptable.
  2. Map the data boundary. List the model provider, chat platforms, local files, and accounts the workflow will use. Choose local models if keeping inference on the device is a requirement, and assess platform traffic separately.
  3. Size for the workload. Use OpenClaw’s documented minimum and headroom guidance as starting points, then account for resource-intensive tools such as browser automation.
  4. Plan access and isolation. Decide how you will administer the host, keep Gateway access private, isolate its runtime from personal accounts, and handle backups and updates.
  5. Compare current provider terms yourself. The official provider list is not a price or performance ranking; verify plan, region, access controls, and terms with the provider before deployment.

If you choose the VPS route, Antihost’s OpenClaw VPS remains listed first here for a private, always-on Gateway: root access, a one-click OpenClaw image, and a 14-day free trial let you test the setup before committing.
