The better question is what kind of absorption you want. Elden Ring suits players who want discovery and hard-earned combat mastery. Skyrim Anniversary Edition suits a flexible fantasy sandbox with many ways to build a character. Cyberpunk 2077 suits anyone who wants a story-rich future city to inhabit. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt suits players who want a fantasy quest driven by narrative. This guide sorts these games by play style, then covers the platform and edition details that most often decide a purchase.
How this shortlist was built
Every pick below is an editorial judgment, not an objective ranking. The sources behind it do not provide review scores, hours-to-complete figures, or player counts, so no claim here rests on those numbers. Instead, each game is compared on six axes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open-world discovery: how the map invites exploration and whether it guides you or leaves you to find things yourself.
- Role-playing and build depth: how much your choices shape your character’s abilities and playstyle.
- Combat style and difficulty: how demanding the fighting is and what kind of skill it rewards.
- Narrative focus: whether the story is a central driver or a backdrop to exploration.
- Platform access: which consoles, PC storefronts, and Nintendo systems carry the game.
- Current edition contents: whether the version you buy includes expansions, add-ons, or bundled extras.
Lists of this kind are updated as editorial choices change. GamesRadar, for example, says it generally revisits its open-world rankings monthly, which is a reminder that any ranking is a snapshot.

Elden Ring: discovery and combat mastery
Bandai Namco describes Elden Ring as an open world action RPG from FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment. Its appeal is less about a guided route and more about working out where to go and how to survive when you get there. GameSpot notes that the map offers limited markers and that many caves, dungeons, and hidden bosses must be found by the player. Combat is demanding, which is the main reason it rewards some players deeply and frustrates others.
#1 Best Overall
- 192-page full color hardcover packed with tools and guidance to help gamemasters run immersive campaigns.
- Includes expert advice for new and experienced GMs tailored to the Warhammer The Old World roleplaying system.
- Features campaign-building tools like Grim Portents, Contacts, and Dark Threads to create dynamic narratives.
- Expanded setting details for Talagaad with guidance for adapting adventures to other regions and stories.
- Contains bestiary, magic items, downtime events, and corruption paths to enrich gameplay and surprise players.
The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, as Bandai Namco describes it, adds weapons, equipment, skills, magic, enemies, bosses, and plotlines on top of the base game. On August 28, 2026, Bandai Namco Europe announced that “ELDEN RING™ Tarnished Edition, the open world action RPG from FromSoftware Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., is now available on Nintendo Switch™2.” That announcement says the 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 Tarnished Edition includes the original game and Shadow of the Erdtree. The new Tarnished Pack content is separately available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Bandai Namco Europe also reports that the original game has sold more than 30 million units; that figure is the publisher’s own and is not independently verified here.
Trade-off: if you want a game that explains itself, this will test your patience. If you enjoy learning a difficult system through repeated failure, it is one of the strongest options on this list.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition: a flexible fantasy sandbox
Bethesda positions Skyrim Anniversary Edition around freedom to explore and to build the character you want. The edition includes the core game, the Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn add-ons, and both existing and new Creation Club content. Bethesda’s page advertises hundreds of weapons, spells, and abilities, which makes it the strongest pick here for players who want to experiment with many kinds of character.
Skyrim’s official page also separates the full edition from an upgrade for existing Skyrim Special Edition owners. The upgrade requires Skyrim Special Edition, so check which version you already own before buying. The page lists purchase options for Xbox, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Rank #3
- ENTER THE WORLD OF SKYRIM: Experience the legendary open-world RPG as a tabletop adventure, exploring Tamriel through branching quests, iconic factions, and rich Elder Scrolls lore.
- COOPERATIVE OR SOLO PLAY: Designed for 1–4 players, allowing you to adventure solo or team up to face dragons, uncover conspiracies, and shape the fate of Skyrim together.
- OPEN-ENDED QUEST SYSTEM: Choose how you approach each mission—diplomacy, stealth, or combat—as your decisions permanently impact the story and the world around you.
- DEEP CHARACTER PROGRESSION: Build unique heroes with evolving skills, gear, and abilities inspired by the video game’s iconic progression systems.
- HIGH REPLAYABILITY: Modular scenarios, multiple quest paths, and varied character builds ensure every campaign feels fresh and every journey through Skyrim is different.
Trade-off: the official material covers the included content, not how mods or every platform version behave. If you plan to rely on mods, confirm compatibility for your specific platform before buying.
Cyberpunk 2077: a story-rich future city
CD Projekt Red calls Cyberpunk 2077 an open-world role-playing game set in a future city. PlayStation’s description places you in Night City as V, and the Phantom Liberty expansion adds the Dogtown setting. This is the option for players who want the city itself to be the main attraction, with dense streets, factions, and a central narrative.
Rank #4
- The outer worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi rpg from obsidian entertainment and private division
- In the outer worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to halcyon, the furthest colony from earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all-vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable
Trade-off: confirm the platform and edition you are buying. Do not assume Phantom Liberty is included unless the specific edition listing says so.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: narrative-heavy fantasy
PlayStation describes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as the story of Geralt’s search for a child of prophecy. It is the most narrative-forward game in this shortlist, and its quests tend to be remembered as stories rather than tasks. PlayStation identifies the Complete Edition as including the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions.
Best Value
- Welcome to the new world: taking on the role of a Hunter, players are tasked with going on a research expedition to a newly discovered continent known only as “new world”.
- Living and breathing ecosystem: utilize the surrounding environment and wildlife to your advantage;Subgenre:Action role-playing game (RPG)
- Online drop-in multiplayer: when the battle is too daunting to take on single-handedly, hail up to three other hunters to assist during quests by sending up a sos flare to a worldwide server.
- Hunt to craft new Gear: defeat monsters and collect loot from fallen foes to craft equipment and weapons styled after the monsters that have been slain.
- SEAMLESS gameplay: players and monsters can move from One map area to another freely and without loading screens whilst gameplay also dynamically transitions between night and day.
Trade-off: base and Complete editions differ in included content. Compare the two on your platform’s storefront before deciding which one to buy.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: an adjacent option
Tears of the Kingdom is a strong pick for players most drawn to exploration and creative traversal, but it is not a role-playing game. GameSpot classifies it as an action-adventure, and the game is built around Ultrahand construction and exploration across Hyrule, the sky, and underground areas. It is listed for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
Trade-off: it belongs here as a recommendation for explorers, not as a strict RPG choice. If progression through character builds matters most to you, the other four games are closer fits.

Check platform and edition before you buy
Platform availability and edition contents change over time, so confirm these four points on the storefront you plan to use:
- Platform. Confirm the game runs on your console, PC storefront, or Nintendo system. For Elden Ring, the Switch 2 Tarnished Edition and the separately available Tarnished Pack are not the same offer; the pack is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
- Edition contents. Identify whether the listing is the base game, a bundled expansion edition, or a separate add-on. Skyrim’s full edition and upgrade paths, the Witcher 3 Complete Edition, and Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion should each be checked this way.
- Existing ownership. If you already own a version, check whether the listing is an upgrade or a full purchase. Skyrim’s upgrade path requires Skyrim Special Edition.
- Source dates. The Elden Ring platform announcement is dated August 28, 2026. Skyrim’s official page and the PlayStation descriptions reflect their listings at the time of writing, so treat them as a starting point rather than a final statement of current stock or pricing.
Choosing among the five
Start with the question of what keeps you playing. If you want to be lost in a hostile world and solve it yourself, Elden Ring is the sharpest pick. If you want a sandbox where you can become almost anyone, Skyrim Anniversary Edition gives you the widest toolkit. If the city is the draw, Cyberpunk 2077 is the most direct fit. If you want a fantasy with a central story that you care about, The Witcher 3 is the most narrative-driven option. Tears of the Kingdom is the choice for players who want exploration and creativity most, even without an RPG framework.
