For a headless, self-hosted prerecorded stream, FFmpeg is the most direct open-source building block; OBS Studio is the better fit for a graphical production workflow, while Stream247 offers a purpose-built headless relay dashboard. None is established as a universally most reliable option: the available sources describe features and workflows, not controlled performance comparisons. If you want the stream to continue without keeping a computer or server running at home, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to consider first: it loops uploaded video to YouTube, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Which tool fits your workflow?
These options solve different problems. FFmpeg is a command-line media tool that can loop files and send an RTMP stream from a continuously available host. OBS Studio provides a graphical encoder and scene workflow. Stream247 describes a headless relay with a web dashboard and controls for playlist inputs and stream output. Choose by how you want to operate the stream, not by an unverified reliability ranking.

Repository claims are not independently tested. |
| StreamNeo | A cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube 24/7, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | People who do not want to keep a local computer or self-managed server running. | It is a paid cloud service after its one free day; each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. |
FFmpeg’s cited deployment is an example, not a verified universal recipe. OBS Project describes OBS as open-source software developed by volunteer contributors, and free for commercial use. The sources do not establish comparative uptime, performance benchmarks, or a universal winner. Stream247 repository is the project source cited for its feature claims; check its current documentation and maintenance status before deployment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat a 24/7 YouTube relay requires
“24/7” means the encoder process must keep sending content and the host must remain available. For a self-hosted setup, plan for a machine or hosted server that stays on, adequate network connectivity and encoding capacity for the chosen media and output, and a way to detect and recover from process or network failures. The cited VPS example does not establish minimum CPU, memory, GPU, bandwidth, or hosting costs. Transcoding needs depend on the input and output settings; no resource figures are established here.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
- Media: Have the prerecorded video or playlist accessible to the encoder. The FFmpeg example uses local files; Stream247 describes YouTube video or playlist inputs and direct HLS URLs.
- Ingestion details: YouTube supplies an ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Use the protocol and configuration appropriate to your encoder.
- Continuity: Configure monitoring and a recovery approach. A process restart rule helps with a stopped process but does not, by itself, prove the host, network, or YouTube connection will remain healthy.
- Credential safety: Treat the stream key like a password. The community FFmpeg example explicitly warns against putting it in a public repository.
Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder’s destination settings. Keep the key private; do not commit it to public code, configuration files, or repositories.
- Start sending the prerecorded content from the encoder, then check YouTube’s preview and live state in Live Control Room before relying on the broadcast.
- Use the stream health information to diagnose reported configuration issues. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents health states and issue reporting, including flags for matters such as unsupported codecs, bitrate, and sample-rate problems.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours. For an extended broadcast, check YouTube’s current guidance and plan independently for any recording or archive you need.
Run a headless FFmpeg relay
FFmpeg is a sensible starting point when you are comfortable configuring a command-line process on a machine that stays online. The cited Ubuntu VPS example loops local video and audio files, sends RTMP, and uses systemd restart behavior. It does not establish a minimum server size or a guaranteed production configuration, so test your own files, output, and recovery path before depending on it.
- Prepare the host and media. Use a continuously available Linux host, install FFmpeg through the appropriate method for that system, and make the media files readable to the account that will run the service. Confirm that the files play and that audio/video formats are suitable for the encoder path you choose.
- Collect the YouTube destination. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key. Store the key outside any public repository and restrict access to the service configuration that contains it.
- Build and test the relay command. Configure FFmpeg to loop the intended file or playlist and send to the YouTube RTMP destination. The cited example documents this workflow but does not provide evidence for one command that fits every media format or output setting. Validate the command with your actual inputs and check YouTube’s preview and health status.
- Keep it running and monitor it. Run the process under a service manager such as systemd and configure restart behavior for process failure. Also monitor host and network availability; an automatic process restart cannot fix every upstream connection or configuration problem.
- Test recovery deliberately. Verify that the service restarts after a process exit and confirm that the encoder reconnects and YouTube returns to a healthy receiving state. Check logs and Live Control Room when recovery fails.
A long-running service may need format normalization if playlist items differ in codecs, resolution, frame rate, or audio parameters. Whether to copy or transcode depends on the actual files and destination configuration; the cited sources do not establish a single safe setting or performance requirement.

Use OBS Studio for a graphical workflow
OBS is appropriate when you want a graphical interface and scene workflow rather than a headless command. The OBS Project identifies it as open-source software under GPLv2 and free for commercial use. Its official help covers streaming connection and bitrate-related dropped frames, but the available information does not establish an ideal bitrate for every network, resolution, or encoder.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and key.
- In OBS, open Settings and configure the stream service or server and key using the values YouTube provides. The exact available labels can vary by OBS version and service configuration.
- Add the prerecorded media as a source and configure the scene and output you intend to send. Confirm that the media repeats as required by your workflow before leaving it unattended.
- Start streaming and verify the incoming preview and health in YouTube Live Control Room. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame or connection indicators during a sustained test.
- Keep the computer, OBS process, and internet connection available for the entire broadcast. Plan separately for restart and reconnection after a crash, operating-system restart, or network interruption.
OBS is a graphical encoder, not a cloud relay: if it runs on a home computer, that computer and connection remain part of the streaming path. A graphical workflow can be easier to inspect, but does not eliminate the need to monitor a long-running stream.
Consider Stream247’s headless dashboard
Stream247’s repository describes a relay that can loop a YouTube video or playlist, accept direct HLS URLs, and send to destinations including YouTube Live over RTMP/RTMPS. It lists controls for resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder, and shuffle. That feature description may suit someone who wants dashboard controls without building the whole workflow around raw FFmpeg commands.

Before relying on it for continuous broadcasting, review its current installation instructions, dependencies, release or maintenance activity, and input requirements. The repository’s feature statements are not independently tested reliability or performance findings. You still need a host that remains online and a safe way to store the YouTube stream key.
RTMP versus HLS for YouTube ingestion
RTMP is the output used in the cited FFmpeg deployment example. YouTube’s Live Streaming API also documents RTMPS and HLS ingestion. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments. Its requirements are specific and should not be applied to a typical RTMP configuration.
- For YouTube HLS ingestion, use TS segments of 1–4 seconds.
- Keep rolling playlists to no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT requests and do not add encryption beyond HTTPS.
If you use HLS, check the current YouTube HLS instructions and configure the sender to meet those requirements. Choosing a different protocol does not correct a bad stream key, unsupported media configuration, or unavailable host.

Troubleshoot common relay failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal. | Stream URL, stream key, destination protocol, encoder process, and network connectivity. | Confirm the selected stream in Live Control Room, replace incorrect destination details, and inspect encoder and service logs. Keep the key private while troubleshooting. |
| YouTube reports a stream health or configuration issue. | Health state and issue details for codec, bitrate, sample rate, or other configuration problems. | Use the reported issue to adjust the media or encoder configuration, then verify the preview and health status again. |
| OBS shows dropped frames. | Connection stability and bitrate-related warnings in OBS. | Review OBS’s streaming guidance and your available upload connection; lower output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then test again. |
| The stream stops after an encoder process exits. | Service-manager status, restart policy, logs, and whether the process can reconnect. | Configure and test restart behavior, such as the systemd approach in the cited Ubuntu example. Check YouTube’s receiving state after restart. |
| One playlist item plays incorrectly or interrupts the relay. | Differences in codecs, resolution, frame rate, or audio parameters among source files. | Test items individually and normalize incompatible media where needed. Required settings depend on the actual files and chosen output. |
| An HLS sender is rejected or behaves unexpectedly. | Segment duration, outstanding playlist segments, HTTPS request method, and encryption. | Apply YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements; these are not RTMP settings. |
Cost and hosting trade-offs
Self-hosting with FFmpeg, OBS, or a dashboard relay means arranging and maintaining the host yourself. A VPS is one documented deployment pattern, but the cited example does not establish its cost or required size. A spare computer is another possible always-on host, but no specific computer or workload capacity is established here. Account for the machine or hosting plan, electricity where relevant, connectivity, and your own monitoring and recovery work when comparing a self-managed setup with a cloud service.
