What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a repeatable list of website captures, start with shot-scraper: it is a screenshot-focused command-line tool with a documented workflow for taking multiple screenshots. Choose Playwright instead when screenshot capture needs to live inside custom browser automation or visual regression tests. Both can automate screenshots; neither has a documented universal batch-size, throughput, or success-rate guarantee.
Which tool fits your bulk screenshot workflow?
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A CLI and a defined capture list | shot-scraper | Its documentation includes a multiple-screenshot workflow and controls for viewport, selectors, waits, authentication, interactions, and output formats. Official documentation |
| Custom browser interactions or integration with an existing automation suite | Playwright | Its page and locator APIs support screenshots, and Playwright Test adds screenshot-baseline assertions. Screenshot documentation Visual comparison documentation |
| Scheduled captures in GitHub Actions | shot-scraper is a direct starting point | It documents a GitHub Actions template and recurring capture examples. Official documentation Example workflow repository |
| Image buffers for downstream processing or element-level capture | Playwright | The screenshot API documents full-page and element capture and returning image buffers. Screenshot documentation |
These are workflow distinctions, not performance rankings. The reviewed project documentation does not establish a universal maximum batch size, speed, or success rate for either tool.
Use shot-scraper for a screenshot-focused batch
shot-scraper is a Python-installed CLI, rather than a browser test framework. Install the package and its browser as described in the official setup documentation, then use its documented multiple-screenshot workflow to define and run a set of captures. Its documentation also has separate guidance for authentication, viewport settings, CSS-selected capture areas, waits, page interaction, file formats, and JavaScript.
That separation is useful when the job is primarily “capture these pages with these settings.” Keep the URL list and output choices explicit, and begin with a small sample so you can verify that names, dimensions, and page state match expectations before expanding the list. The official docs do not promise a particular throughput or batch limit.

Where it works well
- Repeatable URL lists that do not need a bespoke automation harness.
- Scheduled or CI-based captures, including documented GitHub Actions workflows.
- Pages needing configured authentication, waits, or simple interactions.
- Viewport captures or selector-based capture areas.
Use Playwright when the capture is part of browser automation
Playwright offers screenshot methods on pages and locators, so code can navigate, interact, and capture within one browser workflow. Its screenshot documentation covers viewport captures, full-page screenshots, element screenshots, and image buffers that can be processed by other code.
Playwright Test adds visual snapshot assertions: an initial run creates a reference image, and later runs compare against it. The test documentation describes tolerances for pixel differences and custom stylesheets that can hide or neutralize volatile page regions. This is suited to regression checks, but it is a test-runner workflow, not a ready-made bulk screenshot CLI.

Where it works well
- Pages requiring application-specific clicks, navigation, or other scripted interactions.
- Capture code that should reuse an existing Playwright automation project.
- Element screenshots or image-buffer processing.
- Visual regression checks against committed reference images.
Plan a batch before running it at scale
- Define what each image represents. Choose a viewport screenshot, a full-page capture, or a selected element. Playwright documents all three; shot-scraper documents viewport sizing and selector-based capture controls.
- Account for page state. Identify authentication, consent dialogs, delayed content, animations, or interactions that affect the result. shot-scraper documents authentication, waiting, and interaction options; with Playwright, write the browser steps your pages require.
- Make outputs unambiguous. Decide file names, formats, viewport dimensions, and any full-page or selector settings before the full run. Capture a sample first to catch configuration errors without implying any specific speed or success rate.
- Automate recurring work. If captures need to run on a schedule, place the job in CI; shot-scraper documents GitHub Actions workflows and recurring examples.
- Stabilize comparisons. Run visual comparisons in a consistent browser and host environment. Rendering can differ across environments; for Playwright Test, use its documented stylesheet options to filter regions that change by design.
Reliability, consistency, and cost considerations
Neither project’s cited documentation establishes a universal capacity or throughput figure, so estimate your own runtime and failure rate with a representative sample of your URLs and environment. Reliability depends on the target pages as well as the automation: login state, page load behavior, dynamic content, and browser execution environment can all affect whether an image represents the intended state.
For visual baselines, consistency matters more than merely saving a file. Keep the browser and host environment steady between baseline and comparison runs, and control known dynamic regions where possible. The Playwright Test documentation specifically discusses environmental rendering variation and stylesheet filtering. Budget for the engineering and CI resources needed to run your own browser captures; the cited official materials do not provide a common pricing or cost comparison for these open-source tools.

Troubleshoot common batch problems
- The capture is blank or incomplete: the page may not have reached the state you intend to capture. Configure an appropriate wait or interaction; shot-scraper documents waits for delays or conditions, while Playwright lets you drive page behavior in code.
- A page requires a login: use shot-scraper’s documented authentication workflow or implement the needed login state in your Playwright automation. Avoid assuming a public-page capture setup will preserve authenticated state automatically.
- The wrong portion of a long page is captured: specify whether the desired output is viewport or full page. For a component-only image, use selector/element capture where supported.
- Visual tests fail despite no meaningful UI change: compare runs in the same execution environment and filter intentionally volatile regions using Playwright Test’s documented stylesheet support.
- A large batch has inconsistent results: reduce it to a representative sample and verify page state, waits, output naming, and environment before scaling. No documented universal batch limit or success rate can replace validation against your own targets.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Send one GET request for an image or PDF; it accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
