The best OBS settings for a low-end PC are the ones that keep your game and output stable on your specific hardware—not a universal resolution or bitrate preset. Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then tune the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, game load and scene complexity while testing the actual content you plan to stream or record.
Start with a baseline, then test your real workload
OBS performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS warns that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record successfully. Use the wizard as a starting point, not a promise of smooth output.

- In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and apply its recommended starting configuration.
- Load the game, scenes and sources you intend to use, and choose the actual streaming service or recording target.
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test. Watch for stuttering in the game or output, and check View → Stats for rendering or encoding lag.
- Change one setting at a time, test again, and keep the change only if it improves stability without an unacceptable loss of image quality.
This is more reliable than copying a preset made for a different PC: the same machine can behave differently with another game, scene collection or encoder.
Choose an encoder that suits your hardware
A supported hardware encoder generally reduces CPU encoding work by using a dedicated component in the GPU or processor. OBS describes modern hardware encoders as providing “very good quality video with minimal performance impact.” Availability and quality depend on your hardware, operating system and encoder generation. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.

| Encoder option | When to consider it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Supported hardware encoder, such as NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV or Apple VideoToolbox | When OBS offers one for your hardware and operating system; it can move encoding work away from the CPU. | Encoder support and quality vary. OBS notes that older hardware-encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. |
| x264 software encoding | When a suitable hardware encoder is unavailable or does not work for your setup. | Encoding uses the CPU, which may already be busy running the game. A specific x264 preset cannot be recommended without knowing the CPU and workload. |
For NVIDIA NVENC, OBS’s compatibility information documents support on Windows and Linux for GeForce 750 Ti or newer, while preferring Turing-generation NVENC for best results. The guide lists GTX 1650 revision 2 and later as examples and notes that revision 1 has an earlier encoder generation. These are compatibility details from OBS’s 2022 guide, not a guarantee that a particular card will handle every game and scene smoothly.
Reduce output resolution or frame rate if performance is unstable
Resolution and frame rate affect the work OBS must render and encode. Lowering the output resolution can reduce encoder load; lowering frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work. If 60 fps is unstable, test 30 fps. OBS’s guides explain these adjustments but do not establish one setting—such as 720p30—as the best choice for every low-end PC.

- In Settings → Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you actually want to stream or record.
- In the same section, set Common FPS Values to your target frame rate. If 60 fps causes problems, compare a 30 fps test using the same content.
- Change one value at a time. A lower resolution or frame rate can improve stability, but also changes how detailed or smooth the output looks.
Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution separate from the output resolution unless you have a specific reason to change it. OBS treats reducing canvas resolution as a last resort because it can complicate scene and source sizing.

For streaming, bitrate must fit both your available upload capacity and the service’s current limit. OBS’s overview guide cites 6000 kbps as a Twitch limit, but the excerpt does not show a publication date. Treat that as a dated example, not a verified current rule; check the platform’s latest guidance before setting a stream bitrate. Leave room for normal variation in your connection rather than assuming your maximum upload speed is continuously available.

Recording bitrate is not interchangeable with a streaming bitrate. OBS’s 2022 hardware-encoding guide gives the following examples specifically for recording on Intel Mac VideoToolbox; they are not general recommendations for low-end PCs:
| Recording resolution and frame rate | OBS example bitrate | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 1280 × 720 at 30 fps | 3000 kb/s | Intel Mac VideoToolbox recording example in OBS’s 2022 guide |

| 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps | 16000 kb/s | Intel Mac VideoToolbox recording example in OBS’s 2022 guide |
Free GPU headroom when OBS or the game struggles
If OBS reports rendering lag or GPU overload, the GPU may be too busy drawing the game and scenes. Try reducing competing work before changing hardware:

- Cap the game’s frame rate at or below the monitor’s refresh rate or OBS’s output frame rate, or enable V-Sync.
- Lower demanding in-game graphics settings.
- Close programs you recognize as GPU-heavy while streaming or recording.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator; OBS says this can resolve some GPU-overload cases, not all of them.
When the symptom is encoding lag instead, focus first on the encoder, output resolution and frame rate. The OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers both types of overload.

Simplify scenes and sources
Scene complexity can contribute to poor performance, and OBS notes that sources may use resources even when they are not visible. If trouble appears only in certain scenes, simplify those scenes before lowering every output setting.

- Remove or reduce browser sources, including their dimensions where appropriate.
- Reduce the resolution of capture sources and media that do not need to be displayed at full size.
- Disable or minimize costly filters.
- Use an image source instead of a more demanding animated or live source for static artwork when suitable.
- Split an oversized scene collection if it contains many sources you do not need for the current production.
Changing the canvas resolution can complicate source placement and sizing, so OBS recommends considering it only as a last resort rather than the first fix.
Check GPU assignment on a Windows laptop or multi-GPU PC
When a system has more than one GPU, OBS and the captured application may be assigned to different GPUs. That mismatch can cause capture or performance problems. OBS’s GPU Selection Guide applies to Windows 10 version 1809 and later, including Windows 11, and recommends choosing the GPU according to the capture method.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics in Windows.
- Find or add OBS in the app list, then open its options.
- For Game Capture or Window Capture, OBS’s guide says to select High Performance.
- For Display Capture, the guide says to select Power Saving.
- Restart OBS if needed and test the same capture source again.
These choices depend on the laptop’s GPU arrangement and capture mode; do not apply one option to every configuration. Consult the OBS GPU Selection Guide if the labels or behavior differ on your PC.
A practical order for tuning
Make adjustments in this order so you can identify what is limiting the setup:
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and test the real game and scenes.
- Use a supported hardware encoder if available and appropriate; otherwise test software encoding without assuming one preset fits every CPU.
- If output or gameplay is unstable, compare a lower frame rate, then a lower output resolution.
- Match streaming bitrate to upload capacity and the platform’s current rules; for recording, choose settings for the encoder and quality you need.
- Free GPU headroom by limiting game frame rate, lowering game graphics and closing GPU-heavy applications.
- Simplify expensive sources and filters, then verify GPU assignment on multi-GPU Windows systems.
OBS’s system requirements explain why there is no reliable one-size-fits-all preset: encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity all affect the demands. If a configuration only works with settings below the quality you need, the limit may be the PC’s available CPU or GPU capacity rather than a missed OBS checkbox.
