Best OBS Resolution and Frame Rate for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a mostly static or slow-moving 24/7 YouTube stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps. Choose 60 fps when smoother motion matters and your encoder and upload connection can sustain it reliably. There is no universally best setting: stable delivery is more useful than choosing the highest resolution or frame rate your setup can select.

Choose settings for the content and the connection

Resolution controls the picture’s pixel dimensions; frame rate controls how many frames are sent each second. A static artwork, ambient scene, or slow playlist may gain little from 60 fps. Sports, fast gameplay, or other rapid movement can look smoother at 60 fps, but that choice raises the recommended bitrate and encoding workload. Choose the highest setting your complete setup can maintain without interruptions, rather than assuming higher numbers are automatically better.

YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats, so viewers may receive different output formats from the resolution you send. Its guidance does not establish a universal viewer preference for one incoming resolution.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates

The values below are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates for H.264 live ingest. They are not minimum internet-plan speeds or guarantees of picture quality in a particular OBS setup. YouTube lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so these H.264 figures should not be applied to those codecs.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Resolution 30 fps 60 fps
720p 8 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p 14 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p 21 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p (4K) 42 Mbps 50 Mbps

For a long-running stream, leave connection headroom rather than planning to use all available upload capacity for the encoder. Actual stability depends on the connection, encoder, and stream conditions; YouTube advises choosing a quality that can be delivered reliably, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

30 fps or 60 fps?

Use 30 fps for mostly static or slow content

At 1080p, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 14 Mbps for 30 fps. This is a sensible starting point for imagery and motion that do not need especially smooth movement, provided your encoder and connection can sustain the stream.

Use 60 fps when motion benefits from it

At 1080p, the H.264 recommendation rises to 17 Mbps for 60 fps. Moving to 60 fps can make fast action smoother, but it also increases the required bitrate and encoding work. If the stream becomes unstable, step down to 30 fps before sacrificing reliability for a nominally higher frame rate.

How to set up OBS for a stable stream

OBS is a software encoder: it runs on a computer, so the computer and its network connection must remain available for the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance supports testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring quality, but does not specify a universal OBS CPU, GPU, or memory requirement.

  1. Choose a target. Match resolution and frame rate to the material. For static or slow-moving content, begin at 1080p30; consider 1080p60 if the motion warrants it and the system can handle it.
  2. Select an ingest codec and bitrate. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. Use the recommendation for the codec you actually select; the table above applies only to H.264.
  3. Set rate control and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  4. Use encrypted transport where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
  5. Set SDR color appropriately. For standard dynamic range (SDR), YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. HDR uses different settings, so do not use the SDR values as an HDR configuration.
  6. Connect OBS to YouTube. In the encoder workflow, connect with your YouTube stream key and confirm the selected stream settings in YouTube’s live control room. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  7. Test the actual program. Before the 24/7 run, test representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube Help states: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  8. Watch the first run. Check OBS and YouTube stream health for dropped or unstable delivery. If problems appear, reduce the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream is reliable, then test again.

For the full workflow, see YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Plan for a stream that runs around the clock

Your computer and connection must stay available

With OBS, the computer running the encoder and its internet connection need to remain on and connected. Power interruptions, system updates, software errors, and network outages can interrupt a continuous broadcast. A brief test does not guarantee that a setup will run indefinitely, so monitor stream health and plan how you will respond to interruptions.

Do not rely on YouTube to archive an extra-long broadcast

YouTube says it can automatically archive a stream that is under 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If you need to preserve the program, make a local recording backup or divide the broadcast into shorter segments. Details: YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Check rights and YouTube policies before looping material

Resolution and frame rate do not determine whether a stream is eligible to remain online or be monetized. Make sure you have the rights to the video and audio you broadcast, and review the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and content. A successful technical test is not a copyright or monetization approval.

Troubleshoot common stream problems

  • Unstable stream or dropped frames: The selected bitrate may be too demanding for the available connection, or the encoder may be overloaded. Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, and test again while watching YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
  • Picture looks less smooth than expected: Check whether the source material contains enough motion to benefit from a higher frame rate. If it does, test 60 fps and confirm the encoder can sustain the corresponding bitrate recommendation.
  • Stream health is poor despite matching the recommended bitrate: The bitrate recommendation is not an upload-speed guarantee. Choose a lower setting that your connection can deliver reliably rather than treating the table value as a minimum service speed.
  • Broadcast stops when unattended: OBS depends on the computer and connection where it runs. Check power settings, sleep behavior, network availability, updates, and encoder status; YouTube may also report a dropped stream.
  • Replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far: A stream over 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR may be limited or unavailable on longer streams. Keep a local recording or schedule shorter segments when retaining a replay matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded video playing on YouTube 24/7, rather than to stream a live camera or use OBS for a live production, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer does not need to stay on at home. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube only; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Any quality up to 4K 60 fps at one flat price per slot; uploaded video streams as made, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).

Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
