Advanced Scene Switcher is the best-supported OBS plugin to investigate for automating scene changes around prerecorded video. Pair it with OBS’s built-in Media Source for one local file, or VLC Video for a playlist when VLC is installed. The key limitation is that automating OBS playback and scenes does not necessarily automate YouTube’s event lifecycle: YouTube’s published encoder workflow includes a manual Go live confirmation after the preview appears.

Build the OBS playback and scene automation
1. Add the video source
- For a single local recording, create or select the scene where it should play, then add a Media Source and select the video file. Review its restart-on-activation and visibility behavior settings: these determine whether showing the source starts it over or lets it continue.
- For a playlist, add VLC Video, select the playlist items, and configure loop or shuffle as needed. Install VLC first; OBS’s VLC source depends on it.
- Check the source in the OBS preview and confirm the intended audio and video are present before scheduling a public broadcast.
2. Configure the automation plugin
Find Advanced Scene Switcher through the OBS Studio Plugins directory, then use its current guide and release notes for installation and configuration. Set up the trigger and action you need—for example, a media-playback condition followed by a scene change. Do not assume a setting name or workflow from an older tutorial applies to the version you install; controls and compatibility can differ.

The community example of switching scenes after a video ends is a useful lead, not a guarantee that every current OBS and plugin combination behaves identically. Rehearse the exact end-of-file condition and scene transition on your installed setup.

- Schedule the event in YouTube Studio/Live Control Room.
- Connect OBS using the stream URL and key provided for that event. Treat the stream key as a credential: keep it private and do not include it in screenshots, recordings, or shared configuration.
- Start sending the encoder feed and wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Follow the event’s current on-screen start procedure. YouTube’s published encoder instructions tell the operator to click Go live after the preview appears. Do not promise unattended YouTube start or end behavior without confirming the event settings and testing them.
- At the end, follow the event’s end procedure and stop sending encoder content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not replace ending the event and stopping the encoder as directed.
This distinction matters: OBS can play media and perform scene/source actions, while YouTube controls the event handoff. Automating one layer does not establish that the other layer has been automated.

Choose the right automation method
- Use Advanced Scene Switcher when the main requirement is a scene or source action tied to a condition such as playback state, visibility, or timing. Check its current documentation for the trigger and action supported by your installed release.
- Use OBS WebSocket when an external software client needs to control OBS. WebSocket integration is included by default with OBS Studio 28 and above, according to the OBS Remote Control Guide dated 2023-04-18. The guide recommends password protection; enable it before exposing remote control beyond a trusted setup.
- Use Python or Lua scripting for custom logic that the plugin or remote client does not cover. OBS warns that poorly written scripts can leak memory or crash the application, so keep scripts simple and test them under the conditions in which they will run. See the OBS scripting documentation.
- Use a control deck only if physical control is useful. OBS names Elgato Stream Deck as an example of hardware integrations. It is optional, not a requirement for scheduled playback or scene changes. OBS Plugins Guide
Check compatibility and rehearse failure cases
OBS plugin support can vary by operating system, CPU architecture, and OBS version. Before installing or updating Advanced Scene Switcher, match its current release notes to your OBS build and platform using the OBS Plugins Guide and plugin directory. - OBS starts with the intended scene and source state.
- The file exists at the configured location and begins as expected.
- Playback reaches the end and the correct scene or next playlist item follows.
- Looping and shuffle behave as configured, if used.
- OBS restarts, the network connection drops, or a source is unavailable; observe what recovers and what needs a person to intervene.
- The YouTube preview appears and the event’s required start and end actions are clear.
OBS automation and YouTube event scheduling are distinct systems, so a missed condition or connection loss can leave the stream in a state that a scene-switching rule cannot fix. Test recovery before making a public schedule depend on it.
