Why 1080p30 is a sensible starting point
A playlist with little motion usually has less reason to use 60 fps than fast-moving footage. OBS warns that 60-fps streaming can be substantially more demanding on a system than 30 fps, while YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can sustain reliably. Start at 1080p30 when the source has useful detail at that size and your equipment and connection pass a sustained test. If not, 720p30 is a sensible step down.

This recommendation is an inference from the official guidance, not a universal guarantee. Low-resolution source video, high-motion content, a constrained encoder, or unstable upload service can change the best setting. Choose the highest setting that remains reliable in your actual setup rather than maximizing resolution on paper. YouTube’s live encoder settings and the OBS streaming guide provide the underlying platform and software guidance.
Set the OBS resolution and frame rate
- Open Settings > Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the size you want viewers to receive: 1920×1080 for 1080p, or 1280×720 for 720p. This is the outgoing stream resolution.
- Choose a Base (Canvas) Resolution for your layout. The canvas is the workspace where OBS arranges sources; it can match your source or monitor resolution even when the output is scaled down. Check that text, images, and video fit the canvas and look as intended in the preview.
- Set Common FPS Values to 30. For a mostly static playlist, 30 fps is a practical starting point. Use 60 fps only if the material benefits from the extra motion detail and your computer and upload connection can sustain it.
- Click Apply, then OK. Run a test stream and inspect the YouTube stream health and OBS statistics. If there are dropped frames or encoder overload, reduce output to 1280×720 at 30 fps and test again.
OBS interface wording can change between versions; the canvas-versus-output distinction is the important one. OBS describes Output (Scaled) Resolution as the stream output resolution and recommends testing the configuration before going live.

Choose a bitrate and stable ingest settings
YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec and frame rate. The values below are recommended ingest bitrates, not proof that a particular connection can sustain them continuously. The table reflects YouTube Help’s guidance as accessed on October 3, 2026.

For codecs other than H.264, consult YouTube’s current table rather than carrying these numbers over: its recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Your encoder must also support the codec you select.

OBS output settings to check
- In Settings > Output, use CBR rate control for YouTube ingest and enter the bitrate appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS for encrypted transport when configuring the stream connection.
- For SDR video, YouTube’s advanced recommendations include Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.
- In Settings > Stream, connect OBS to YouTube using the stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
Labels and available encoder options depend on your OBS version and hardware. Confirm that the chosen codec and settings are supported by the encoder in use.
Test for a 24/7 run, not just a successful start
A short test can show that OBS connects and produces a picture, but it cannot establish that a computer, encoder, or internet connection will remain stable around the clock. Before relying on the setup, test an extended run under the same conditions you expect to use: the same output resolution, bitrate, playlist, encoder, and network connection. Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS statistics for dropped frames and encoder overload. If the run is not stable, lower the output resolution or frame rate and test again.

Upload capacity needs sustained headroom above the configured video bitrate because other traffic and connection variation can interrupt delivery. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and selecting a reliable quality; a speed-test result at one moment is not evidence of continuous performance.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
A single 24-hour stream is longer than YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If you need an archive, plan regular stream endings under 12 hours and make a local recording backup. This is separate from output resolution: changing from 1080p to 720p does not remove the duration limitation. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Common problems and what to change
- Dropped frames: The connection may not sustain the outgoing bitrate, or upload capacity may be varying. Check stream health, reduce bitrate if appropriate, or step down from 1080p30 to 720p30 and retest.
- Encoder overload: The computer or selected encoder may not keep up. Reduce output resolution or frame rate; 30 fps is less demanding than 60 fps according to OBS guidance.
- Soft or distorted-looking picture: Check whether the source itself has enough detail for the chosen output size and whether the canvas layout is being scaled as expected. Upscaling a small source does not add source detail.
- Stream starts but the archive is missing: Check the stream duration. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use shorter sessions and a local recording backup if the archive matters.
- OBS cannot connect or YouTube receives no signal: Check the selected YouTube service, stream key, and ingest settings in OBS. If the key may have been exposed or is incorrect, verify or replace it in YouTube Studio and reconnect.
