Start with 1280×720 at 30 fps, using a compatible hardware H.264 encoder if your PC has one. If it does not, test x264 with the veryfast preset. For x264, OBS gives 3,000–5,000 kbps as a reference range for 720p30 low-to-medium-motion video—not a universal platform requirement. Nature footage can still be demanding when it contains moving water, rain, foliage, or clouds, so test your actual scene before settling on a bitrate.
There is no single best preset for every old PC: the result depends on the encoder, scene, streaming service, and stable upload speed. OBS itself warns that compatible hardware does not guarantee streaming capability. Use the profile below as a starting point, then check OBS’s statistics during a sustained test.

Recommended starting settings
| OBS setting | Starting point | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1280×720 | Begin at 720p to limit the workload. If encoding overload persists, reduce the output resolution before trying more demanding settings. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | For a mostly static ambient scene, 30 fps is a sensible first test. OBS notes that 60 fps can be very taxing compared with 30 fps. |
| Encoder | Compatible hardware H.264, if available; otherwise x264 | Hardware encoding can move real-time encoding work off the CPU. Compare the picture at your intended bitrate: older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate. |
| x264 preset | veryfast | OBS’s x264 bitrate examples assume veryfast. If the CPU is overloaded after reducing resolution or frame rate, try a faster preset such as superfast; faster presets reduce CPU load at the cost of compression efficiency. |
| Rate control and video bitrate | CBR; test within 3,000–5,000 kbps for x264 720p30 | The bitrate range is OBS’s low-to-medium-motion reference, not a universal requirement. Follow the streaming service’s current limits and stay within the upload speed your connection can sustain steadily. |
| Audio bitrate | Around 160 kbps | OBS gives about 160 kbps as a general streaming starting point. Reduce it if upload capacity is constrained; no nature-sounds-specific audio bitrate is established here. |
OBS’s official x264 guide says, “There is no such thing as ‘best settings’. Every single setup, for every single use case, will be different.” Its x264 streaming guide and system requirements explain why a profile that works on one machine may not work on another.

Check hardware encoding first
OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync among its supported hardware encoder options. Support depends on the exact processor or graphics card, driver, operating system, and OBS build; a brand name alone is not enough to confirm compatibility. OBS’s hardware encoder documentation lists NVIDIA GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series and newer for NVENC support, and Intel Core-i 2xxx-era integrated graphics for Quick Sync compatibility. These are compatibility notes, not recommendations to buy those parts. OBS recommends newer Quick Sync generations because earlier ones had lower quality.

Hardware encoding is often worth testing on an old PC because it can preserve CPU headroom for the operating system and OBS. But do not assume it will look better: at the same bitrate, an older hardware encoder may show more compression artifacts than x264. Compare both on the same scene, at the same output resolution and bitrate, and watch for dropped or overloaded frames during an extended run.
When to use x264
If no compatible hardware encoder is available—or its output looks worse than x264 at your target bitrate—use x264 and start at veryfast. If the encoder cannot keep up, first lower the resolution or frame rate. Then, if needed, test a faster preset such as superfast. Faster presets consume less CPU but use bitrate less efficiently, so inspect fine detail in leaves, rain, water, and other moving textures rather than judging only a static frame.

Set up and test the stream in OBS
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use OBS’s wizard as a starting point; it evaluates the system and connection, but its recommendation still needs a real test.
- Set the output profile. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution to 1280×720 and common FPS to 30. In Settings → Output, select the streaming encoder, set x264 to veryfast if using x264, and use CBR if that is what your streaming service expects. Enter a bitrate permitted by that service and supported by your stable upload capacity.
- Set audio conservatively. Use around 160 kbps as a starting point, or a lower value if upload capacity is limited.
- Keep the scene simple. A single media source or loop is a practical way to avoid unnecessary scene work. Avoid animated overlays and heavy filters unless you need them; these are workload-reduction tips, not guarantees of a particular performance result.
- Run a safe, sustained test. Test privately, unlisted, or through another safe method before relying on the stream. Watch OBS’s status and statistics, inspect the logs, and confirm that the video loops and audio continues as intended. A brief preview is not evidence that a PC can run continuously.
- Test recovery deliberately. OBS’s overview documents an Automatic Reconnect control in Advanced settings. Verify the full stream path and recovery after a controlled network interruption before leaving it unattended.
OBS’s overview recommends testing before going live and notes that bitrate depends on both the service’s limits and upload speed. See the OBS streaming overview for its general setup guidance.

- Encoding overload: Check OBS status and logs to distinguish encoding overload from network trouble. Reduce output resolution or frame rate first. If x264 is still overloaded, try a faster preset such as superfast.
- Network instability or dropped frames: Check whether upload speed is stable and whether the chosen bitrate is allowed by the service. Do not raise bitrate to fix encoding overload; more bitrate cannot make an overloaded encoder keep up.
- Soft or blocky moving detail: Compare the actual moving scene at the target bitrate. If the service and connection allow it, a higher bitrate within the permitted stable range may preserve more detail. If they do not, lower the output resolution or accept some loss of fine texture.
- Hardware encoder looks worse than x264: Compare both encoders at the same bitrate and scene. Hardware encoding may free CPU, but older generations can be less efficient; choose the one that produces a stable stream with acceptable image quality on your machine.
- Hardware option is missing: Confirm the exact hardware generation, drivers, operating system, and OBS build. OBS’s compatibility list does not mean every system with a related brand or product name will expose the encoder.
- Stream stops after a brief successful test: A short test cannot establish unattended reliability. Check cooling and power settings, test the loop for longer than a preview, and verify reconnect behavior. OBS does not certify a system for 24/7 operation.
OBS 31.0 documents an NVENC “Ultra High Quality” tuning option optimized for live-action artifacts such as camera sensor noise, but says it significantly reduces throughput. That makes it a poor default for an old PC; consider it only as a controlled test if you have NVENC and enough performance headroom. See the OBS NVENC documentation.

What changes when you want to run 24/7
There is no special 24/7 encoder preset. The hard part is keeping the entire chain—PC, OBS, source media, internet connection, and stream destination—working unattended, then recovering when something fails. OBS recommends testing but does not promise continuous uptime. Before depending on a local setup, test the actual loop and stream path for an extended period, make sure the PC’s cooling and power behavior suit continuous operation, and confirm that the stream reconnects after a controlled interruption.
Copyright and YouTube’s rules still apply to a continuous nature stream. Use footage and audio you own or have permission to stream, and check the current rules for your content and channel. A 24/7 schedule does not itself establish rights to reused recordings or guarantee platform approval.
