Choose a YouTube-recommended bitrate that your own stable upload connection can sustain, then test it before going live. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; if your connection cannot hold the target reliably, lower the bitrate or output resolution.
Choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
Set the output resolution and frame rate first; then select the matching YouTube H.264 target below, provided your upload connection can sustain it. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband speeds or a guarantee that a particular internet route will remain stable. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality your connection can support.

| OBS output target | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
For example, 10 Mbps is YouTube’s recommendation for 1080p30, not a universal setting for India. If your measured upload speed fluctuates or competing devices use the connection, the stream may not sustain that rate. Choose a lower target that passes a realistic test rather than relying only on the speed advertised by your ISP.

- Pick output resolution and frame rate. Decide whether the content benefits from 30 or 60 fps and select the resolution your connection and computer can handle.
- Set bitrate. Use the corresponding YouTube recommendation as a target, but reduce it if your stable upload path cannot maintain it.
- Use CBR rate control. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding.
- Set keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Test before the event. Run a test stream with representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages before and during the broadcast.

Estimate whether your upload connection can sustain it
YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Treat the result as a starting point: a speed test does not prove the entire live route will stay steady, and other traffic or changing connection quality can reduce the capacity available to OBS. Test at the time and over the connection you expect to use.
If OBS reports dropped frames, the OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for setting bitrate while diagnosing the issue. That is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of safety. Leave room for other network use and fluctuations, and retest. OBS stream connection troubleshooting

Choose between 30 and 60 fps
Sixty frames per second can make fast motion look smoother, but it requires a higher YouTube-recommended bitrate for a given resolution and can demand more from the computer. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can tax a system more than 30-fps streaming. If the computer struggles despite a stable network, try 30 fps; if the network is the limit, lower the bitrate or resolution as well. OBS Studio overview

Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable output
- OBS shows network-dropped frames: Lower the bitrate and test again. If you are on Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet; OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable does not increase your ISP plan’s upload capacity or fix congestion or problems elsewhere on the route.
- Frames look choppy but OBS does not show network drops: Try 30 fps or a less demanding output. Network drops and computer encoding or rendering limits are different problems; check OBS and YouTube status messages before changing several settings at once.
- The test works, but the live event does not: Recheck stream health during the event and consider other devices or applications using the upload connection. Reduce bitrate if the connection has become less stable.
- The speed-test result is much higher than the bitrate you can sustain: Do not assume the advertised or momentary speed is available continuously to the stream. Test the live route and use a lower bitrate if drops recur.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded video or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving OBS running on a PC.
