For a 24/7 ASMR stream, start with a clean microphone signal and no filters; add only the processing that solves an audible problem. If steady room or computer noise is present, try light noise suppression. Use a gentle expander before a noise gate when you need to lower quiet background sound without abruptly cutting whispers or breathing. Add a compressor only if loudness varies enough to need control, and put a limiter last as a peak ceiling. There is no OBS preset validated specifically for ASMR, so test every setting against the quiet sounds your audience is meant to hear.
Choose filters by the problem you hear
OBS filters do different jobs, and stacking them all is not automatically better. Correct microphone placement and a quieter recording environment often help more than aggressive processing. Add a filter only when you can hear the problem it is meant to address.

| Filter | Use it for | Risk or requirement | Placement guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noise Suppression | Mild, steady background or white noise, such as computer or environmental noise. | Can distort wanted sound when pushed too hard and is generally ineffective in a loud room. RNNoise uses more CPU than Speex; NVIDIA Noise Removal requires the NVIDIA Broadcast SDK redistributable. | Audition early in the chain, before dynamics processing. OBS documents the available methods and trade-offs in its Noise Suppression filter guide. |
| Expander | Reducing low-level unwanted sound more gradually than a hard gate. | A threshold set too high can reduce quiet wanted sounds such as breathing or whisper tails. | OBS suggests placing it near the end, after compression and other effects but before the limiter. Its RMS detection and timing figures are starting guidance, not an ASMR preset. See the Expander filter guide. |
| Noise Gate | Cutting background noise while the microphone is not active. | Opening and closing can clip quiet breaths, whispers, or sound-effect tails if thresholds are too aggressive. | Set the close threshold above the noise floor and the open threshold just below the wanted voice level, then test quietly. OBS’s documented -32 dB close and -26 dB open values are defaults, not universal targets. See the Noise Gate filter guide. |
| Compressor | Controlling a source whose loudness varies substantially or whose peaks need reduction. | Compression changes dynamics. Output gain can raise average level and make noise more audible. | OBS says it is typically near the beginning of the chain. Its -18 dB threshold and 10:1 ratio are documented defaults, not ASMR recommendations. See the Compressor filter guide. |
| Limiter | Providing a final ceiling to reduce the chance that peaks exceed a set level. | It cannot repair distortion already present in the source. | Place it last. OBS’s documented -6 dB threshold is a software default, not a required stream target. See the Limiter filter guide. |
| Gain | Adjusting a source that needs a level change. | Does not remove noise or fix poor microphone placement or an unsuitable recording environment. | Adjust while monitoring levels. Gain is among OBS’s audio and video filters. |
Build and audition a conservative filter chain
- Get the untreated sound right. Position the microphone for the intended whispers, taps, or other close sounds. Listen to the input with filters off and address obvious room noise or handling noise at the source where practical.
- Add suppression only for steady noise. Try a low amount and compare the filtered sound with the unfiltered signal. OBS documents RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; Speex is configurable. NVIDIA Noise Removal has the additional SDK redistributable requirement. If suppression changes the texture of a whisper or a delicate sound, reduce it or remove it.
- Add a compressor only if the dynamics call for it. Use it to manage substantial loudness variation, not as a default ASMR effect. Listen for flattened dynamics and for background noise becoming more prominent if you raise output gain.
- Try an expander for low-level noise. A practical starting audition is OBS’s RMS detection recommendation with 5–10 ms attack and 50–120 ms release. These are OBS guide ranges, not tested ASMR settings. Lower the threshold or ease the ratio if breaths, whisper beginnings, or fading sounds get quieter than intended.
- Use a gate only when you need a closed-mic cutoff. Set the close threshold above the noise and the open threshold slightly below the wanted voice level. Test at the quietest intended level as well as during pauses. OBS lists -32 dB close and -26 dB open as defaults; do not assume they suit your microphone or room.
- Put the limiter last. Set its ceiling while monitoring the actual stream mix. The OBS default threshold is -6 dB, but it is not a required target, and a limiter cannot undo clipping that occurred before it.
- Use Gain only to adjust level. It will not make a noisy source clean. Recheck the whole chain after any gain change, because raising a signal can also make unwanted noise easier to hear.
OBS’s general placement guidance is to put a compressor near the start, an expander after compression or other effects, and a limiter last. A sensible trial chain is therefore optional suppression, optional compressor, optional expander, and limiter; a gate is an alternative to audition for the low-level-noise task, not an automatic addition. Keep the chain only if it preserves the quiet sounds you intend to stream. Filter guidance is documented in the official OBS filters guide.
Expander or noise gate: which fits ASMR?
An expander has an adjustable ratio and is described by OBS as giving a smoother opening and closing than a fixed-ratio gate. A noise gate is designed to cut background noise when you are not talking. For ASMR, an expander is a reasonable first audition when low-level sound needs reducing because it can be less abrupt; a gate is useful only if testing shows it does not remove wanted quiet material. This is an application of OBS’s filter descriptions, not an official ASMR-specific recommendation.

Test the stream in YouTube before relying on it
Filter quality and continuous-operation reliability are separate issues: OBS’s filter documentation does not establish that any filter setup will keep a broadcast live for 24 hours or longer. YouTube recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, previewing the feed in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Follow the current YouTube live streaming tips and encoder guidance for your setup; platform instructions can change.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for the expected audio and video before starting the intended broadcast.
- Listen specifically for lost breaths, abrupt gate openings, suppression artifacts, compressor pumping, and peaks that distort.
- During a live broadcast, keep monitoring stream health and audio/video quality as YouTube advises.
- If you keep a local archive, check that the recording is intact and continuing to grow.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 audio and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Use the current guidance for the encoder configuration you are actually using rather than treating a platform recommendation as an ASMR filter setting.

Check music rights before streaming
You are responsible for having the necessary rights for content in a livestream, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may produce a warning or placeholder image, or interrupt or terminate the stream. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and its copyright guidance before including music.
YouTube says Creator Music tracks offered for licensing or revenue sharing cannot be used in live streams. Its safer options include the YouTube Audio Library, original music, or third-party music whose terms permit the intended livestream use. A track described as “free” is not, by that description alone, proof that you have the rights you need.
