Choose the official Switch 2 Pro Controller for a familiar full-size pad and Nintendo features; consider 8BitDo’s Pro 3 if customization matters most; reuse an original Switch Pro Controller if you accept that its HOME button cannot wake the new console. For retro or handheld play, the right fit depends on the game and setup.

Which Switch 2 controller fits your play style?
| Option | Best fit | Key tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | Traditional full-size play and buyers who want Nintendo’s listed features | Premium-tier choice; check your region’s current price |
| 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad | Players who value customization, motion controls and stick features | Its shake-to-wake feature is specified for Switch 1 only; verify exact behavior and connection mode in the current manual |
| Turtle Beach Rematch Wireless | Players seeking a licensed wireless alternative with rear-button mapping | No rumble; up to 40 hours is a published specification reported by Nintendo Life, not an independent battery test |
| 8BitDo Ultimate 2 | Players considering a feature-rich third-party alternative | GamesRadar+’s review describes setup as convoluted on Switch 2 and says it cannot wake the console; quoted MSRP was $59.99 / £69, but current price may differ |
| Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Owners who want to use a controller they already have | Pairs wirelessly, but its HOME button cannot wake Switch 2 |
| GameCube controller with Nintendo’s adapter | GameCube-style play in supported games | Adapter connects through a dock USB port in TV mode; layout is not a general-purpose fit |
| Mobile/attached handheld controller | Players prioritizing grip and ergonomics in handheld mode | Check the exact model’s dimensions, fit and compatibility, including whether a case changes the fit |
These options are not interchangeable on features or setup. A dock-oriented full-size pad, a legacy controller, an adapter-based GameCube setup and a controller that grips the console solve different problems.
Best full-size option: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
If you mainly play docked and want a conventional full-size controller, the Switch 2 Pro Controller is the straightforward official choice. Nintendo Life’s guide describes it as a comfortable traditional option and reports motion controls, HD rumble, amiibo scanning and remappable rear buttons. Those features make it a broad-fit option for players who want more than basic inputs, although whether each matters depends on the games you play.
#1 Best Overall
- HD Rumble 2
- Motion controls
- Built-in amiibo functionality*
- Capture Button
- C Button for GameChat**
Its main drawback is cost relative to budget-oriented pads: confirm the current price in your market rather than relying on a price from another region or an older listing. For occasional or secondary play, consider whether an existing compatible controller or a lower-cost explicitly Switch 2-compatible model is enough.
Best for customization: 8BitDo Pro 3
8BitDo lists the Pro 3 as Switch 2 compatible. Its feature list includes TMR joysticks, extra bumpers, rear paddles, Hall Effect triggers, motion control for Switch and Steam, and software customization. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison lists approximate battery life of 20 hours and a weight of 8.5 oz (242 g); treat the battery figure as an approximate listed specification, not an independently measured result.
Rank #2
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
One important limitation: 8BitDo specifies shake-to-wake for Switch 1 only. Do not assume the Pro 3 can wake a sleeping Switch 2. Check the current manual for the connection mode and which features work in the specific games and platform mode you plan to use.

Turtle Beach Rematch Wireless
Nintendo Life’s guide presents the licensed Rematch Wireless as an alternative with TMR sticks, gyro and mappable rear buttons. It reports a manufacturer-stated battery life of up to 40 hours; that is a published specification relayed by the guide, not a test result. Its clearest compromise is the absence of rumble. If vibration feedback matters to you, that omission may outweigh the other features.

- The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have motion controls and HD rumble 2, along with the new C Button for easy GameChat* access and all-new mouse controls in compatible games.
- This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.
- Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
8BitDo Ultimate 2
GamesRadar+’s review calls the Ultimate 2 a comfortable, feature-rich alternative, while also describing Switch 2 setup as convoluted and noting that the controller cannot wake the console. The review quotes an MSRP of $59.99 / £69; those regional figures are not a guarantee of current retail pricing or availability. Treat comfort and setup judgments as the reviewer’s assessment, not an independent finding here.
How to choose a lower-cost controller
The cited material does not establish a single cheapest current model or live market-wide price ranking. For a lower-spend purchase, choose a model whose maker explicitly lists Switch 2 compatibility, then check its connection type and feature omissions before ordering. In particular, verify whether you need wireless play, rumble, motion controls, NFC/amiibo, rear-button remapping, or wake-from-sleep support; compatibility alone does not promise every feature.

Can you reuse original Switch controllers?
Nintendo says the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, and it can be charged through the dock with a USB cable. The key inconvenience is sleep recovery: the original controller’s HOME button cannot exit Switch 2 sleep, so you may need to wake the console another way. Nintendo’s accessory compatibility listings also qualify some accessory use by compatible games, so check the particular game and accessory rather than assuming universal support.
Recommended Free Tools
Original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly, but older Joy-Con accessories such as grips, wheels, straps and charging accessories do not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo documents certain game-specific exceptions for using legacy Joy-Con with Ring-Con or a leg strap. That can preserve a use for older hardware, but it does not make the old accessories a general fit for the new controllers.

Retro play: when a GameCube controller makes sense
If you prefer the GameCube button layout or are playing a game that suits it, Nintendo lists its GameCube Controller Adapter as usable on Switch 2 in TV mode through a USB port on the dock. This is a purpose-specific setup, not a general controller recommendation: check that your game supports the controller and that its inputs suit the actions you need. The adapter’s dock connection also makes this a TV-mode option rather than a solution for handheld play.
Handheld play: prioritize grip and fit
A full-size wireless pad does not solve the discomfort some players feel holding the console itself. For handheld ergonomics, look for an attached or mobile-style controller and confirm that the exact model physically fits the Switch 2. Tom’s Guide discusses the GameSir G8 Plus as a mobile controller wide enough to fit the Switch 2 screen and as an ergonomic possibility, but this is an editorial guide rather than manufacturer documentation. Check dimensions, compatibility and fit with your case before relying on that guidance.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Mostly docked? Start with a full-size controller; weigh the official Pro Controller’s listed features against its local price.
- Want remapping or extra controls? Compare the Pro 3’s paddles and software customization with the Rematch’s mappable rear buttons.
- Need to wake the console from sleep? Do not count on the original Switch Pro Controller’s HOME button, or on features that a product page specifies only for Switch 1.
- Need motion, rumble or amiibo? Check that exact feature for the model and game. The Rematch does not have rumble.
- Already own a Switch controller? Test its pairing and game compatibility first; account for the wake-from-sleep limitation and accessory fit.
- Playing retro games or handheld? Match the controller to the layout, mode and physical setup rather than choosing solely by feature count.
