For YouTube, use RTMPS when supported, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds). Choose the bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain it. These are encoder-output settings; NGINX RTMP relays the stream but does not make an incompatible encoder output compliant. A working configuration also cannot guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation: test representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Start with the settings YouTube actually checks
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, and keyframes every 2 seconds, with an interval no longer than 4 seconds. These choices apply to the stream sent to YouTube, whether that stream comes directly from an encoder or passes through an NGINX relay. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance is the reference for the ingest parameters.

For SDR, YouTube’s advanced encoder settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709. Treat these as encoder settings, not NGINX relay directives. Follow the encoder’s available controls and confirm that its output matches the format you intend to send.

The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations and minimums, not measurements or guarantees. Match the row to the resolution and frame rate you will actually send. Other codecs may have different recommended ranges.

Do not pick a bitrate from resolution alone: YouTube’s ranges depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test the available upload bitrate and choose a setting that remains reliable on the actual connection. Leave headroom for network variation and other traffic rather than assuming a speed-test peak is sustainable all day.
Confirm the RTMP module exists in your NGINX build
NGINX RTMP directives work only when a compatible RTMP module is installed and loaded. Installation is not universal: it depends on NGINX edition, operating system, package source, and module build. Do not paste a module package command for NGINX Plus into an Open Source installation, or assume an Open Source binary includes a third-party module.

NGINX Plus
F5’s NGINX Plus RTMP module guide documents installing the compatible nginx-plus-module-rtmp package, loading ngx_rtmp_module.so in the main context, testing with nginx -t, and reloading with nginx -s reload. These are instructions for the documented NGINX Plus context; check the guide and your platform’s package details before applying them.

Keep the NGINX relay separate from the encoder
The encoder creates the video and audio stream, including codec, bitrate, frame rate, CBR, and keyframes. NGINX RTMP handles module and relay behavior. If the incoming stream already meets YouTube’s settings, changing an NGINX chunk size or enabling HLS does not make a noncompliant encoder output compliant.
HLS packaging directives such as fragment length, playlist length, playlist type, and path apply when the server also needs to emit HLS. They are not prerequisites just to relay a stream to YouTube Live. The community-maintained nginx-rtmp directives reference describes these controls; verify each directive against the exact module version installed.

Preflight and monitor a 24/7 stream
- Check the installed build. Identify NGINX edition, operating system, package source, and RTMP module version. Confirm that the module is available and loaded before relying on RTMP directives.
- Set the encoder output. Choose a codec supported by your sending encoder and YouTube ingest, select the matching resolution and frame rate, then set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate appropriate to that mode and connection.
- Use RTMPS for the YouTube leg when supported. Confirm the relay or encoder can connect using the secure ingest endpoint and the correct YouTube stream key.
- Validate configuration changes. Use the configuration test and reload procedure appropriate to your NGINX edition and platform. For the documented NGINX Plus module workflow, F5 specifies
nginx -tandnginx -s reload. - Test before launch. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check the resulting picture, audio, and stream-health messages before leaving the channel live.
- Keep watch after launch. Monitor YouTube stream health and messages during operation. A 24/7 deployment also needs an operator-specific plan for relay, encoder, network, and power failures.
The cited guidance does not establish a universal NGINX reconnect or failover recipe, capacity requirement, network redundancy design, or uptime guarantee. Those depend on the deployed NGINX RTMP and encoder versions, infrastructure, and failure-handling setup.
