The fastest NBN plan you can order depends first on your address and connection type. For eligible fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) homes, the main speed-focused choices include 500/50, 750/50 and 1000/100 Mbps; a 2000 Mbps service is possible only where the connection, network termination device and provider support it. Compare advertised busy-evening speeds, upload capacity and the ongoing monthly price—not just the headline tier.
Check which NBN speeds your address can get
NBN plans are not universally available at every speed. Start with an address availability check from NBN Co or a provider: the result identifies the technology serving your premises and the retail tiers providers can offer there. An advertised speed upgrade is not necessarily an upgrade you can order at your address.

The September 2025 wholesale speed changes raised selected FTTP and HFC tiers. They do not mean every NBN connection received the same upgrade. NBN Co also notes that availability and actual performance depend on the connection and service configuration. See the ACCC’s report on the 2025 changes and NBN Co’s information about its network technology.
| Previous wholesale tier | Revised wholesale tier | Availability context |
|---|---|---|
| 100/20 Mbps | 500/50 Mbps | Selected FTTP and HFC services; check premises eligibility. |
| 250/25 Mbps | 750/50 Mbps | Selected FTTP and HFC services; check premises eligibility. |
| 1000/50 Mbps | 1000/100 Mbps | Selected FTTP and HFC services; check premises eligibility. |
These are wholesale tier changes, not a promise that every retailer offers every tier at every eligible address. A 2000 Mbps plan is a more conditional option: the access connection, NBN equipment and provider must all support it.

Compare busy-evening speed, not just the plan name
Australian providers advertise typical evening speeds to help customers compare performance during the busy period, generally 7 pm to 11 pm. The stated figure is an expectation for that period, not a guarantee that every device or household will see that speed. The ACCC’s broadband speed guidance explains the labels and how to interpret them.
As a point of context, the ACCC’s June 2026 final Measuring Broadband Australia report found fixed-line NBN households received an average 99.4% of their plan’s download speed during peak evening hours, compared with 98.5% in the March 2026 report. Those are measured population averages, not a forecast for an individual address. The ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia results also separate different provider and service measures; do not treat a featured-provider average as a result every customer will receive.

Choose a tier for the way your household uses the internet
The right tier depends on how many people are online at once and what they do. ACCC speed categories provide useful anchors for busy-period use, but they are guidance rather than individualized recommendations.
| ACCC evening-speed category | Speed anchor | Use described in ACCC guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Below 15 Mbps | Browsing and email. |
| Standard | At least 15 Mbps | HD video and browsing. |
| Standard Plus | At least 30 Mbps | 4K video and music streaming. |
| Premium | At least 60 Mbps | 4K video plus online gaming. |
Light, everyday use
If your household mainly browses, checks email and streams occasionally, start by comparing lower-cost plans that advertise suitable evening performance. Paying for a faster tier may not add much value if few people use the connection concurrently.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Several people streaming, gaming or working
For a busy household with concurrent streams, large downloads, online gaming and video calls, compare the faster tiers available at your address. More download capacity can help when several activities compete for bandwidth. Gaming itself does not always need a high download rate, but downloads and updates can be large; latency and a stable connection matter too.
Frequent uploads and video calls
Check upload speed as well as download speed if you regularly make video calls, back up files to cloud services or send large files. The 500/50 and 750/50 tiers have a lower stated upload rate than 1000/100, despite the latter’s higher download capacity. The ACCC’s June 2026 data reported featured fixed-line NBN providers averaged 100.5% of plan download speed and 90.4% of plan upload speed during busy hours. These are averages for the featured providers, not individual guarantees.

Compare the real retail offer before switching
Two plans with the same speed tier can differ in their advertised evening speeds, upload capacity and monthly cost. Retail prices and promotions change, so check the provider’s offer for your address before choosing. The comparison should include the ongoing price after any introductory period, how long the promotion lasts, and any conditions attached to it.
- Typical evening download speed: the provider’s stated expectation for 7 pm to 11 pm.
- Upload speed: useful for calls, cloud backups and sending large files.
- Eligibility: confirm the precise premises and available access technology.
- Ongoing cost: compare the regular monthly rate as well as any introductory price and its duration.
- Household demand: account for simultaneous users, streaming quality, gaming, downloads and remote work.
- Equipment: check whether your router and wired devices can handle the subscribed speed.
There is no single retail plan that can be called “best” for every address and budget. A useful comparison is specific: eligible plans for your premises, their typical evening speeds and uploads, and the full ongoing rate.

Check your router and devices if a fast plan feels slow
A plan’s headline speed is only one part of the path between the NBN connection and your device. Router capability, Wi-Fi setup, device age, household activity and provider network design can affect the result. An older router may limit a fast service, especially over Wi-Fi. Check speed with a capable device connected by Ethernet where possible, and compare the result with the provider’s busy-evening figure rather than assuming a plan change alone will solve an in-home bottleneck.
For access technologies with technical constraints, including copper-based services and fixed wireless, the available performance may be limited by the line or network conditions. NBN Co outlines factors affecting real-world results in its network technology information, and the ACCC covers speed claims and measurements in its speed guidance.
What ACCC speed results can—and cannot—tell you
The ACCC’s June 2026 publication was the final report in its Measuring Broadband Australia program. It found fixed-line NBN households averaged 99.4% of plan download speeds during peak evening hours. For featured providers, the reported average was 100.5% of plan download speed and 90.4% of plan upload speed during busy hours. The report also found an average 864.6 Mbps during busy hours for NBN very high-speed services in the wholesale 1000/100 Mbps Home Ultrafast category.
