A multi-function rice cooker is worth considering when its extra settings fit the meals you actually make. Some models add useful rice and grain programs, porridge, cake, or steaming; broader multicookers may also handle slow cooking, sautéing, soup, yogurt, or pressure cooking. The best fit depends on the exact model’s menu, capacity, cleanup, controls, and regional specifications—not the number of presets on the box.
What makes a multi-function rice cooker useful?
“Multi-function” can describe two different kinds of appliance. A rice-focused cooker expands beyond basic white rice with settings for other grains, porridge, steaming, or cake. A multicooker may include a rice program alongside slow cooking, sautéing, soup, yogurt, or pressure cooking. Choose by the dishes you expect to make regularly: extra modes are valuable only if they save space or effort compared with using separate appliances.

Preset counts alone do not establish cooking quality. Check which rice types and grains have dedicated programs, and whether the appliance has the functions your household will use. Do not assume that two models from the same brand share the same modes.

| Model or product range | Documented functions and qualifications | Capacity or regional detail |
|---|---|---|
| Zojirushi NS-TSQ10/18 | White/sushi rice, quick cook, mixed rice, porridge, sweet rice, brown rice, cake, and steam-cook menus, according to Zojirushi’s international catalog. | Catalog lists 5.5-cup and 10-cup sizes and 220–230V specifications. Confirm local voltage and model availability before purchase. |
| Zojirushi NS-LAQ05 | A smaller rice-cooker option; the product listing describes it as suitable for singles, couples, and small families. | Three cups of uncooked rice, according to Zojirushi’s product listing accessed in 2026. |
| Aroma ARC-5200SB | Aroma’s guide, updated December 19, 2025, lists 12 functions, including Quick Rice, Multigrain, Risotto, Soup, Cake, Eggs, Slow Cook, Reheat, and Sauté-then-Simmer. | 20 cups cooked. This is cooked output, not uncooked-rice capacity. |
| Instant Pot multicookers | Functions vary by model. Selected models include pressure cook, slow cook, sauté, steam, rice, multigrain, soup/broth, cake, yogurt, and keep warm; some variants add air frying and related modes. | Check the exact model’s menu rather than applying features across the range. |
| Instant Pot 20-cup grain/rice cooker | Instant Pot describes it as supporting rice, grains, slow-cooked dishes, sautéed meals, steaming, and keep warm. | Instant Pot’s listing calls out 20-cup capacity; verify the capacity basis for the exact product before comparing it with other cookers. |
| SharkNinja PossibleCooker Pro Plus | SharkNinja lists slow cook, sear/sauté, steam, keep warm, sous vide, braise, bake, rice/pasta, and proof functions. | Do not transfer features or cleaning guidance from other models in the wider PossibleCooker range. |
These examples illustrate different approaches, not a controlled head-to-head ranking. A rice-focused unit may suit someone who wants dependable programs for a range of grains, while a broader multicooker can make sense when it replaces functions otherwise handled by other appliances.

How to choose capacity without confusing the numbers
Capacity labels are not always comparable. A figure may refer to uncooked rice or cooked output; the Aroma ARC-5200SB, for example, is described as a 20-cup-cooked model. Zojirushi lists the NS-LAQ05 as a three-cup uncooked-rice model. Compare products on the same basis, and choose for typical meals rather than occasional maximum batches.
- Estimate how many portions you usually cook at once.
- Check whether the stated capacity is uncooked rice or cooked output.
- Consider whether you regularly batch-cook grains or prepare meals for guests.
- Allow for the cooker’s countertop footprint as well as its bowl size.
What to expect from cooking times and results
Manufacturer menu descriptions explain what a cooker is designed to do; they are not independent proof that every mode performs equally well. Timing can differ by recipe, grain, batch size, and selected program. In TechRadar’s hands-on review of the PossibleCooker MC1101UK, a brown-rice test took 75 minutes, compared with the recipe booklet’s approximate 50–60-minute estimate, and the reviewer reported a good result. That is one reviewer’s test, not a guaranteed time for every batch or cooker.

- EASY-OPENING HINGED LID: The hinged lid on the multi-function cooker makes it easy to open, fill and serve and seals to lock in moisture for consistently fluffy rice.
- SIMPLE PRESET PROGRAM OPTIONS: Select an option on the control panel and press the button for perfectly cooked rice, grains or hot cereal. The rice cooker automatically switches to warm after cooking and keeps food warm for up to 12 hours.
- ONE-POT MEAL VERSATILITY: With the included steam basket, this rice cooker steamer can steam vegetables, shrimp, eggs, seafood and more while your rice or grains cook below.
For a broader multicooker, look for independent testing of the exact model and the specific foods you expect to prepare. Tom’s Guide reports laboratory testing of several Instant Pot multicookers and notes both a learning curve and control-label trade-offs alongside performance observations. Read those findings as model-specific rather than universal.

Frequent use depends on more than the menu. Look for controls you can read and understand, and check which parts detach for cleaning and what the manufacturer says about dishwasher use. A steaming basket is useful only if steaming is part of your routine; Zojirushi notes that one is included with some models, not all. Confirm accessory compatibility by exact model code before buying a basket or replacement inner pot.

Confirm the exact model and regional fit
Product names and features can differ between markets. Zojirushi’s cited NS-TSQ10/18 listing specifies 220–230V, so those specifications should not be assumed to describe a North American model. Before purchasing, verify the full model code, local voltage, warranty, availability, dimensions, and included accessories for your region.

Instant Pot says its CarbReduce function can reduce carbohydrates and sugar by up to 40% compared with traditional rice-cooking methods. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently established health result here. Treat it as a product claim and do not infer a particular health benefit from the figure alone.

A practical shortlisting checklist
- List the meals you make: identify the rice types, grains, and non-rice dishes you expect the cooker to handle.
- Match the menu: compare the exact model’s documented settings with that list instead of choosing by preset count.
- Compare capacity consistently: establish whether each figure means uncooked rice or cooked output, then match it to usual portions.
- Check independent observations: look for testing of the exact model and food, while treating reported timings as test-specific.
- Inspect daily-use details: assess controls, cleaning instructions, accessories, dimensions, voltage, and local warranty.
