What you may be looking for in an AION 2 alternative
NCSOFT’s official AION 2 pages promote exploration, flight, underwater exploration, classes, and dungeons. Those features point to several different reasons someone might try the game—and several different ways another MMORPG could be a better fit. The recommendations below match specific preferences rather than claiming to reproduce AION 2’s combat or overall design.

For a low-friction start, consider how much you want to explore before paying, whether you prefer fixed classes or flexible weapon combinations, and whether PvP or a story-led PvE path is important. The official game pages describe the features below; they do not establish independent comparative judgments of quality.
Guild Wars 2: try this first for exploration and optional large-scale PvP
Guild Wars 2’s official site describes fast-paced action combat, character customization, regular events, open-world bosses, multiplayer instances, World versus World (WvW) mega-battles, and PvP arenas. It is the strongest fit here if the draw of AION 2 was moving through a world, taking part in public activities, and having large-scale PvP available without making it the only way to play.
#1 Best Overall
- Aion Classic currency
- For use in the in-game shop
- Can be used for Daeva Pass to get exclusive daily, weekly, and seasonal quests and rewards
- Can be used for in-game packs and character boosts
The core game is free to play and includes access to the level cap. A paid bundle offers the first two expansions. That gives you a way to try its world and combat before deciding whether to buy additional content; it does not make Guild Wars 2 mechanically equivalent to AION 2.
Throne and Liberty: choose it for weapon-defined builds and organized battles
Throne and Liberty’s official gameplay page describes a system in which weapons, rather than a fixed class choice, define your combat role. You can combine any two weapons and take part in both PvE and PvP, including 24-versus-24 battlegrounds and guild contests.
Rank #2
- Aion Classic currency
- For use in the in-game shop
- Can be used for Daeva Pass to get exclusive daily, weekly, and seasonal quests and rewards
- Can be used for in-game packs and character boosts
Consider it if experimenting with weapon combinations and fighting as part of an organized group matters more to you than finding a close match for AION 2’s advertised exploration features. Its shared fantasy-MMO setting and group combat are broad points of overlap, not evidence of the same combat system.
Recommended Free Tools
Final Fantasy XIV: choose it for story-led PvE and an extended free trial
Final Fantasy XIV’s official free-trial page offers progression through level 80 with no playtime limit, and characters can transfer to the full game. That makes the trial a substantial way to find out whether its story-led PvE structure suits you.

The trial is not a useful test for a PvP-first player: PvP is unavailable, and the trial also restricts chat, trading, and market access. Its length is valuable for experiencing the story and PvE, but those limits shape what you can evaluate before moving to the full game.
Choose by the experience you want
| Game | Best fit | What the official source describes | Try-before-paying notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guild Wars 2 | Exploration, action combat, customization, and optional large-scale PvP | Events, open-world bosses, multiplayer instances, WvW mega-battles, and PvP arenas | Free core game includes max-level access; a paid bundle provides the first two expansions. Official site. |
| Throne and Liberty | Weapon combinations and organized battles | Any two weapons can be combined; PvE, PvP, 24v24 battlegrounds, and guild contests | Trial terms are not stated on the cited official gameplay page. Official gameplay page. |
| Final Fantasy XIV | Story-led progression and PvE | Free-trial progression through level 80 with no playtime limit | Trial excludes PvP and restricts chat, trading, and market access; characters can transfer to the full game. Official free-trial page. |
Which one should you try?
- Start with Guild Wars 2 if you want to explore a different world and test action combat with a free core game, while keeping large-scale PvP optional.
- Start with Throne and Liberty if the main thing you want to compare is how weapon choices shape your build, especially in organized PvP.
- Start with Final Fantasy XIV if you are open to a more story-led PvE experience and want a long trial, rather than a PvP-focused test.
A player asking for something with similar combat and dungeons may find those features alone do not settle the choice: the three games differ in build structure, exploration emphasis, PvP access, and onboarding. Pick the feature that matters most to you, then judge the alternative on its own terms.
