One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most early Survival-mode homes, use cobblestone or another accessible stone for the main shell, then add wood, glass and decorative blocks for the look you want. That mix is practical to gather and avoids making a starter house depend on flammable walls. Choose materials according to your location and purpose: a quick shelter, a comfortable base and a fortified build do not need the same palette.
How to choose house materials
Three factors matter: how readily you can gather a block, how it holds up to hazards, and how it looks. Durability includes properties such as hardness, blast resistance and flammability. The balance depends on your surroundings and whether the house is mainly a home or a defensive structure. The Minecraft Wiki’s building-material guide discusses these considerations and recommends varying texture and color for visual interest.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Gathering effort: Start with materials that are abundant nearby. Cobblestone is a practical default; save blocks that need extra processing or access to another dimension for later.
- Hazards: Stone and cobblestone are nonflammable. Wood can burn, so consider nearby fire sources and the risk of explosions when choosing your walls and details.
- Appearance: A small palette of complementary blocks usually gives a house more character than covering every surface with one material. The best colors and textures are a matter of taste.
Comparing common house materials
| Material | Why use it | Tradeoffs and useful placement |
|---|---|---|
| Cobblestone | Common, renewable and easy to gather; useful for a practical early shell. It is nonflammable and reasonably resistant to explosions. | Its rough look suits rustic or fortified builds. Add stone variants or trim for detail. Minecraft Wiki material guide; safe-home tutorial. |
| Stone | Abundant, nonflammable and relatively resistant to explosions. | Usually takes extra processing from cobblestone unless mined with Silk Touch. Choose it when you want a smoother stone appearance. Minecraft Wiki material guide. |
| Stone bricks or bricks | A more finished stone-like appearance while retaining useful defensive properties. Minecraft’s official article says bricks have the same blast resistance as other types of stone. | Collection or crafting can take more effort than a basic cobblestone shell. Use them for an upgraded exterior or selected accents. Minecraft Wiki material guide; Minecraft.net, “Block of the Week: Bricks”. |
| Wood planks | Renewable by replanting trees, easy to work into a design and available in multiple palettes. | Flammable and vulnerable to fire spread. Keep it away from lava and other likely ignition sources; use stone around fireplaces or comparable hazards. Minecraft Wiki material guide; safe-home tutorial. |
| Glass | Good for windows and a lighter-looking exterior; a construction-handbook description also names glass panes as a window material. | Use it as a design choice, not as the protective core of the house. Scholastic’s construction-handbook page. |
| Obsidian | An option when resisting explosions is the overriding goal. | Slow and difficult to gather and build with, making it excessive for an ordinary starter home. Minecraft Wiki material guide; safe-home tutorial. |
| Nether blocks | Can provide a different palette; the material guide notes that Nether wood is nonflammable. | Many options require Nether access, so they are usually poor defaults for a first house. Minecraft Wiki material guide. |
Choose a palette for your stage of survival
First night: prioritize shelter
Build a fast, enclosed shelter with what is available. A nearby hill or cave can reduce the time spent gathering and building; improve the shelter once you are safe. Minecraft Wiki shelter tutorial; safe-home tutorial.
Starter house: use accessible stone as the shell
Where you have enough material, make the main walls from cobblestone or stone. Use wood for a frame, floors or roof details when fire risk is manageable, and add windows for visibility. A restrained mix of textures and colors can make the house feel less stark without making every block a costly choice.

Established home: upgrade the finish
Once gathering is easier, consider stone bricks or bricks for a more finished exterior. Keep slower-to-collect materials as accents unless you have a specific reason to build a heavily fortified structure.
Fortified or high-risk build: prioritize resistance
Choose materials with fire and blast hazards in mind. Obsidian is an extreme choice when explosion resistance is the priority, but its acquisition and building effort make it a poor fit for most everyday homes.

When a wooden house makes sense
A full wood house is still a valid choice if its appearance is important and you accept the fire risk. Wood is renewable and flexible to design with, but keep it clear of likely ignition hazards. Where fire is a concern, use stone around the exposed risk area rather than assuming a wooden shell will provide the same protection.
Edition and property caveat
This is general Survival-mode guidance, not a block-by-block defensive specification. The Minecraft Wiki tutorials used here were crawled roughly 1.3 years before the research timestamp; numeric properties can be edition- or version-sensitive. Check the current Java or Bedrock edition if a precise value matters to your build. The bricks comparison is specifically supported by Minecraft’s official 2017 article, which says bricks share the blast resistance of other stone types.
