What to check before downloading any mod
1. Decide whether you are using a dedicated server
A dedicated server is a separate server process or rented instance that players join over a network. A single-player world opened to LAN and a locally hosted cooperative world can behave differently. This distinction matters most for The Idol: its creator page says dedicated servers do not work, despite listicles presenting it as a multiplayer standout. Do not assume that “multiplayer” means “works on every server type.”

2. Lock the Minecraft edition, version and loader
The supported choices in this guide are Java Edition projects. From the Fog is developed exclusively for Java Edition. The Idol’s CurseForge listings identify Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1. Existence is described as targeting Fabric or Quilt 1.20–1.20.1, and Revervox guidance identifies NeoForge 1.21.1. Those are not interchangeable environments: Forge, Fabric, Quilt and NeoForge use different mod files and loader libraries.
3. Confirm whether the project is a mod, datapack or modpack
From the Fog has a datapack component that the developer specifically recommends for servers. A modpack such as From the Fog Reimagined bundles many dependencies and configuration choices. A stand-alone mod may require a loader and libraries but no pack importer. Read the current file notes on the project’s CurseForge page or developer page immediately before installation; mod versions change frequently.
4. Make every installation identical
The server and every player need the same Minecraft version, the same loader and the same mod list. Many horror projects require the mod on both client and server. A mismatch can produce a rejected connection, missing entities, a crash during startup or a world that loads without the intended events.
Best verified choice: From the Fog
Why it works well for a group
From the Fog adds horror to a familiar survival world instead of replacing Minecraft with a separate campaign. Listicle coverage describes it as the vanilla-style option because it does not rely on custom models, while the developer, Lunar Eclipse Studios, gives the clearest multiplayer statement in this shortlist: “FTF is completely multiplayer friendly!” The same developer advises using the datapack for servers because the mod may have unexpected consequences otherwise.
That combination makes it the most defensible default for a friends’ server. You can retain normal building, exploration and progression while letting encounters interrupt ordinary play. It also avoids committing the entire group to a large modpack before you know whether everyone enjoys the tone.
Server setup approach
- Choose a Java Edition version that is currently listed as supported on the From the Fog project page.
- Install the required loader and the exact From the Fog files on the server.
- Place the project’s datapack in the world’s datapacks directory as directed by the developer.
- Install the matching client files for every player who will connect.
- Start the server, check the console for loader or datapack errors, then have one player join before inviting the full group.
- Walk through a short test world or a backup of your real world to verify that events occur and that ordinary survival mechanics still function.
Keep a world backup before adding the project to an established save. The developer’s warning about unexpected consequences is a reason to test on a copy, not evidence that the project is unsafe.

Best ready-made pack: From the Fog Reimagined
When a modpack is the better choice
From the Fog Reimagined is for groups that want a preassembled atmosphere, progression and supporting mods rather than a single horror mechanic. A pack reduces the work of choosing compatible additions, but it also increases startup time, memory use and the number of files that must remain synchronized.
Memory requirement and player planning
The pack’s creator recommends allocating a minimum of 5 GB of RAM and gives 5 GB for 10 players as a stated example. This is a creator recommendation for this pack, not a universal Minecraft requirement or a guarantee of performance. Leave memory for the operating system and other server processes; watch the server console and tick performance as the world fills with entities and explored terrain.
- Start with the creator’s 5 GB recommendation rather than assuming a small vanilla server allocation is enough.
- Add players gradually and monitor lag during exploration, combat and event-heavy scenes.
- Pre-generate or limit unexplored terrain only if the pack’s instructions support that change; removing bundled settings can break its intended balance.
- Give every player the same exported pack profile or file set. Manually adding one extra mod to a client can make the connection fail.
The Idol: compelling concept, restrictive server support
What is established
The Idol is widely recommended in 2026 listicles as a group horror pick. Its creator page says it works in multiplayer, and CurseForge file listings identify Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. The creator’s v2.0.0 notes say the mod was rewritten from scratch to fix bugs, including multiplayer incompatibility.
The dedicated-server conflict
The same creator page says dedicated servers do not work. A secondary guide also warns that multiplayer may fail on some hosting arrangements because events are client-side. The creator page is the higher-authority source for this support question, so plan around the restriction. In the supported setup, the first player to join becomes the configuration host according to the mod’s configuration information.

In practical terms, The Idol can be worth trying for a small group using the multiplayer mode the creator supports, but it is a poor choice when your requirement is a conventional always-on dedicated server. Test the exact v2 release and host type in an empty world before committing a shared save; the rewrite means older reports may no longer describe current behavior, while the dedicated-server warning still has to be respected until the creator changes it.
Secondary options for specific horror styles
Revervox: voice-based paranoia
Revervox is aimed at groups using voice chat: the threat imitates players’ voices, so the scare depends on people talking naturally and noticing that a familiar voice is in the wrong place. Secondary server guidance identifies version 2.0 for NeoForge 1.21.1 and says both the server and clients need the mod. Because those details come from secondary coverage rather than a verified primary project page, check the current file page, loader and voice-chat dependencies before installation.

For the best experience, agree on a voice channel, establish a way to verify a suspicious instruction, and tell players that deception is part of the game. Do not use real-world emergency phrases or impersonation that could cause someone to leave a dangerous physical situation.
Existence: shared hallucination horror
Existence focuses on psychological horror in which players experience shared hallucinations. Secondary server instructions target Fabric or Quilt 1.20–1.20.1 and call for installation on both clients and the server. This is a good fit for groups that prefer uncertainty—whether a room, sound or sight is real—over a visible monster chase. Verify the current loader files before starting because the version range is taken from list coverage.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Vanilla But Wrong
Vanilla But Wrong is described in listicles as a psychological-events project for Fabric 1.21.x. No current server procedure or authoritative compatibility details are established here, so use it only after a private test with matching client and server files.
Other modpacks and co-op combinations
DREAD, Horror Craft, Creepy, In Silence for Minecraft and Multiplayer Mimic Horror are named as horror modpacks in listicles, but their current versions and server compatibility have not been verified. Zombie Awareness Reborn with Vic’s Point Blank is a more action-oriented co-op shooting combination; choose it when your group wants firearms and coordinated combat rather than slow-burn exploration. The Obsessed is described as mainly single-player and should not be your first multiplayer recommendation.
Exact installation workflow for a friends’ server
Step 1: Create a compatibility sheet
- Minecraft Java Edition version
- Loader name and loader version
- Mod or modpack release
- Required libraries and dependencies
- Whether a datapack must be installed in the server world
- Whether the project supports your host type
Write the values down before anyone installs files. This prevents the common situation in which one player silently updates a loader while everyone else remains on the previous release.
Step 2: Prepare a clean test instance
Use a new world or a copy of the production save. Install only the chosen project and its required dependencies first. Do not add performance, map or cosmetic mods until the horror project has started successfully; extra files make a crash harder to diagnose.

- Dungeon Creeper Battle new-and-nasty mobs in this all-new action-adventure, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers.
- Multiplayer Up to four players can team up and fight together in co-op mode.
- Power Up Unlock dozens of unique items and weapon enchantments for devastating special attacks.
- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
Step 3: Install the server side
- Run the installer for the selected loader and Minecraft version.
- Accept the server EULA in the generated configuration file when you are legally able to do so.
- Copy the server-required mods into the server’s mods directory.
- For From the Fog, add the recommended datapack to the specific world used by the server.
- Start once, stop cleanly, and read the log for missing dependencies or rejected file versions.
Step 4: Install matching clients
Give each player the same loader profile and mod files. For a modpack, distribute the pack profile instead of asking players to recreate it by hand. Launch once in the target profile, then connect to the test server.
Step 5: Test the horror systems
- Join with two players and verify that both can enter the world.
- Trigger or wait for the project’s ordinary events without using operator commands that bypass progression.
- Check that sounds, entities, visual effects and configuration changes appear for every player.
- Restart the server and reconnect to ensure the event state survives a normal shutdown.
Step 6: Move to the real world
Stop the server, make a dated backup, copy the tested configuration and datapacks, then start the production world. Keep the test instance until the group has completed at least one session without crashes.

The server rejects a player immediately
Compare the Minecraft version, loader and complete mod list character for character. A client-only visual mod can still cause a mismatch if the server expects a different file set. Remove unverified additions and retry with the clean test profile.
The world loads, but no horror events occur
Check whether the project requires a datapack on the server, whether the event is gated by time or progression, and whether the server configuration is being read from the world you actually opened. From the Fog’s developer specifically directs server owners to use its datapack.
Only one player sees the event
This can indicate client-side event logic or unsupported server architecture. The warning around The Idol is especially relevant: secondary coverage reports client-side events on some hosting setups, while the creator says dedicated servers do not work. Reproduce the issue in the supported host type before changing settings.
The server crashes during startup
Read the first missing dependency or version error rather than the final cascade of messages. Confirm that Forge, Fabric, Quilt or NeoForge matches the project. Roll back the last added file, start the clean test world, and restore the production backup only after the loader reaches the main menu and the server finishes booting.

Players experience severe lag
Check memory use, entity counts and newly generated terrain. For From the Fog Reimagined, begin with the creator’s 5 GB minimum recommendation and increase resources only when monitoring shows the server needs it. More RAM cannot correct an incompatible loader or a broken mod combination.
How to make a co-op horror session work
Set expectations before the first night
Tell players whether the goal is survival, investigation, role-play or simply jump scares. Agree on difficulty, keep-inventory rules and whether anyone may use spectator mode. Horror is less effective when one player spoils every encounter with commands or an external map.
Use distance deliberately
Many scares depend on separation. Split into pairs, assign different rooms to search, or establish a rendezvous point rather than having all players move as one group. Keep voice chat available for projects such as Revervox, but avoid talking over quiet audio cues.
Protect the shared save
Back up before installing, updating or removing a horror project. Do not remove a mod that has added entities or blocks from a live world without checking its instructions; the result can be missing content or a damaged save. Preserve the exact file set used for each backup so you can reopen it if an update changes behavior.
Respect player boundaries
Psychological horror and voice imitation can be intense. Let players opt out of voice-based deception, flashing effects or surprise audio, and provide a clear way to pause the session. A frightening mod is successful only when everyone can stop safely.

Choosing by group size and play style
| Your situation | Most suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two to four players on a normal Java server | From the Fog | Clear developer statement of multiplayer support and a defined server datapack path |
| A larger group wanting an all-in-one experience | From the Fog Reimagined | Curated pack, provided you can meet the creator’s 5 GB minimum recommendation and manage synchronized clients |
| A small group without a dedicated server | The Idol | Creator says multiplayer works, but avoid the unsupported dedicated-server scenario |
| Friends who rely on proximity or team voice chat | Revervox | Voice imitation is central to its appeal; verify NeoForge 1.21.1 support first |
| Players who prefer ambiguity over combat | Existence | Shared-hallucination premise, with Fabric/Quilt 1.20–1.20.1 guidance to verify |
| Players who want guns and coordinated fights | Zombie Awareness Reborn with Vic’s Point Blank | Its described focus is co-op shooting horror rather than a purely supernatural stalker |
What is not known from current support information
No reliable adoption, download or player-count statistics are established for these projects, so popularity claims in listicles should be treated as editorial opinion. Current Modrinth availability, official Mojang server policy specific to horror mods and hosting-provider comparisons are outside the confirmed details here. File pages and creator instructions can change; recheck them on the day you install, especially for version numbers and loader support.
Final recommendation
For most friends, start with From the Fog on Java Edition, install its server datapack and test it on a copied world. Choose From the Fog Reimagined when you want a larger curated pack and can budget the creator’s stated memory recommendation. Consider The Idol only when your host matches the creator’s supported multiplayer arrangement; do not select it for a dedicated server on the assumption that a listicle’s “multiplayer” label overrides the creator’s warning. Treat Revervox, Existence and the other listicle-only projects as style-specific experiments that require a fresh compatibility check.
