Mindustry hosting is not one product. It ranges from pressing the in-game host button to renting a managed game-server plan or administering a general-purpose virtual machine. The right choice is determined by group size, whether the server must stay online when nobody is playing, how comfortable you are with server administration, and how much control you need over maps and mods.
The official Mindustry documentation describes a dedicated server as a separate headless program rather than a normal game session. It recommends a dedicated Linux or Windows machine, Java, the server JAR and reachable network ports. That makes a dedicated server suitable for a persistent public or private world, while the in-game option is better for temporary sessions.

Hosting performance cannot be inferred from a provider’s logo, plan name or presence in a comparison article. The material available for 2026 does not include independent uptime measurements, latency tests, backup-restore tests or a verified ranking. “Best” should therefore be read as “best fit for your requirements,” not as a single universally superior company.
Choose the hosting approach that matches your group
| Approach | When it runs | Administration | Network exposure | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in LAN/Steam host | Only while the host’s game remains open | Almost none | Usually limited to the local network or the platform’s session connectivity | A few friends and short sessions | Consumes the host device’s resources and is not intended for larger groups |
| Managed Mindustry hosting | Normally continuously, subject to the plan and provider operations | The provider handles much of the machine and service setup | Provider supplies a remotely reachable server | Groups that want convenience and game-specific controls | Features, limits, locations, backups and support differ by plan; recurring charges apply |
| Self-managed VPS or cloud VM | Continuously while your VM and server process are running | You install Java, the JAR, firewall rules and updates | You configure the public endpoint and port | Administrators who want control, scripting or a public server | More troubleshooting and security responsibility; no universal hardware baseline is published in the official guide |
| Dedicated physical machine | Continuously while powered and connected | Full responsibility for the operating system and hardware | Depends on the machine’s network and router | Operators with suitable hardware and reliable internet | Electricity, hardware maintenance and home-network exposure can outweigh the savings |
Use built-in hosting for a small local session
The official wiki presents the in-game LAN/Steam option as simple hosting for a few players on a local network. It uses the host device’s CPU, memory and network connection, and the session ends when the game closes. Choose it when everyone is nearby, the world does not need to persist, and nobody needs administrative controls.
It is a poor fit for a larger group, a server that should be available overnight, or players connecting from unrelated networks. In those cases, moving to a dedicated process avoids tying server availability to one person’s open game.

Use managed hosting when convenience is the priority
A managed game-server service packages a machine, network access and Mindustry-oriented controls. Depending on the plan, a web panel may reduce the need to work at a command line, while the provider handles some operating-system and service tasks. This is the most practical route for a group that wants a persistent server but does not want to learn Java process management, firewall configuration and routine maintenance.
A 2026 iTechGuides comparison identifies several Mindustry-focused offers. That page is a commercial comparison and not an independent performance benchmark. It can help you discover candidates, but it does not prove that any listed service is fastest, most reliable or best for every group. Confirm each detail on the provider’s current plan page and ask support about anything that is not explicit.

The official guide lists cloud hosting or a dedicated provider VM as an option for a public server. A VPS gives you an ordinary Linux or Windows machine on which you choose the Java version, server release, maps, mods, startup method and access controls. You can automate restarts and backups and move the installation later, but you also own every operational task.
The official material does not publish minimum RAM, CPU or player-to-resource sizing. Do not select a machine from an invented “required” specification. Start with the smallest plan that meets the host’s documented limits, monitor actual load and upgrade if the server or operating system shows sustained resource pressure. A third-party VPS walkthrough can explain mechanics, but it is not evidence that its provider is the best choice.

How to compare managed Mindustry plans
Compare the complete service rather than the headline slot count or introductory price. Record the answers in writing before checkout; plan pages and terms can change.
| Decision area | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mindustry compatibility | Which Mindustry release is supported today? Can you select a specific version, update on your schedule and roll back if an update breaks a map or mod? | A server and clients must be compatible. Automatic updates can interrupt a group that wants to remain on a known release. |
| Setup and control | Is there a panel for starting, stopping and restarting the process? Can you edit configuration files, upload maps and manage mods without opening a support ticket? | Convenience is the main reason to pay for managed hosting. Hidden restrictions can recreate the administration burden you meant to avoid. |
| Player limits | Is the limit a hard technical cap, a recommended number or simply a marketing label? Are extra players billed separately? | Your expected group size should fit the actual plan terms, not just the product name. |
| Location and access | Where is the server region? Can you choose a location near most players? What address and port do players use? | Geographic distance affects responsiveness. A nearby region is generally preferable, but no source here supplies measured latency for any provider. |
| Backups | Are backups automatic, how many copies are retained, where are they stored, and can you download them? What is the exact restoration procedure and expected recovery time? | A backup that cannot be restored when a map or configuration is damaged is not a complete recovery plan. |
| Support | Which channels are included, when are they staffed, and do they support Mindustry configuration or only the underlying machine? | Specialist help can save time during version, mod or networking problems. |
| Security and protection | Is traffic filtering or attack protection included? Who patches the operating system? Can you restrict panel access and issue separate administrator credentials? | A public server is an internet-facing service. Responsibility must be clear before you expose it. |
| Billing and cancellation | What is the recurring price after any introductory period? Which billing interval applies? Are taxes, setup fees, storage or additional backups extra? What are refund and cancellation rules? | The total term, not a temporary headline rate, determines the real cost. |
Do not mark a provider as including a feature unless its current documentation states it. The available comparison material does not validate every provider against all of these criteria.
Set up a dedicated Mindustry server yourself
The following workflow follows the official server guide. It applies to a dedicated Linux or Windows machine, including a cloud VM. Exact package-manager commands vary by operating system, so use the distribution’s supported method to install Java rather than copying an unrelated command.
- Choose and secure the machine. Use a dedicated computer or VM that can remain powered on. For a public server, a cloud VM or dedicated provider machine avoids casually exposing your home public IP. Create an administrator account for the server rather than sharing your normal personal credentials.
- Install Java. Install a Java runtime supported by the Mindustry server release you intend to run. Confirm that the
javacommand works from the machine’s terminal or command prompt. - Download the desired server release. Obtain the server JAR from the official Mindustry release channel and place it in a dedicated directory. Keep the file name and release noted so you can reproduce or roll back the installation.
- Launch the headless program. From that directory, run
java -jar [server].jar, replacing[server].jarwith the actual JAR filename. Keep the process running in the session or service method appropriate to your operating system. - Host a map. At the server console, use
host <mapname> [mode]. Replace<mapname>with the map identifier and optionally provide the game mode. The server must be running before this command can create the hosted session. - Allow the game port through the machine firewall. The official Windows instructions call for allowing port
6567for both TCP and UDP in Windows Firewall. On Linux or another platform, create equivalent inbound rules in the host firewall for TCP and UDP 6567, while leaving unrelated ports closed. - Test locally first. Connect from a client on the same network or VM environment before troubleshooting the public internet path. Check that the selected map loads and that administrator commands behave as expected.
- Document the installation. Record the Mindustry release, Java version, map and mod files, firewall changes, administrator credentials location and backup location. This short inventory makes upgrades and recovery far safer.
Let players connect from another network
A server process can be running correctly and still be unreachable from outside its network. Cross-network play requires a reachable address and a path through firewalls and, for a home connection, the router.

- Use a stable host address. For a cloud VM, use the public address supplied by the provider. For home hosting, identify the router’s public IP and reserve a stable private address for the host machine if your router supports it.
- Forward the port on a home router. Create a port-forwarding rule that sends external TCP and UDP traffic on port
6567to the host machine’s private address and the same port. The exact labels differ by router manufacturer. - Allow the port on the host firewall. Router forwarding does not override Windows or Linux firewall rules. Both layers must permit TCP and UDP 6567.
- Share only the necessary connection details. Give trusted players the host’s public IP or provider address and the Mindustry port. Do not publish a home address in a public forum or expose administrative credentials.
- Test from outside the home network. A player using a mobile connection or another network can test the real internet path. Testing from inside the same router may succeed even when external forwarding is wrong.
The official FAQ describes port forwarding and sharing the host IP as the way to play across networks. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work even with a correct router rule; in that case, a cloud VM or managed service avoids the home-network limitation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and operational safeguards
- Keep the public surface small. Open only the Mindustry port required for play. Restrict remote administration to a secured management path and never reuse a personal password.
- Protect the public IP. The official wiki cautions against casually hosting from home and presents cloud hosting or a dedicated provider VM as an alternative for public servers. A public address can reveal the approximate network location and attract unwanted traffic.
- Back up worlds and configuration. Copy maps, configuration files and mod files to storage separate from the running server. A provider’s snapshot is useful, but retain a download you control when the service allows it.
- Schedule maintenance. Announce restarts, test a new Mindustry release on a copy and keep the previous JAR until players have confirmed that maps and mods still work.
- Control permissions. Give operator privileges only to people who need them. Keep a written list of administrators and remove access when someone leaves the group.
- Watch actual behavior. Note disconnects, server-console errors, CPU or memory pressure and player reports. There is no published universal resource formula in the official documentation, so measured behavior is more useful than a guessed specification.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The server starts, but nobody can join
First confirm that the server is listening on the expected machine and that players are using the correct address. Then check both host-firewall rules and, for home hosting, the router’s TCP and UDP 6567 forwarding. Test from a genuinely different network. A local test alone does not prove that the public route works.
Local players connect, remote players cannot
This pattern usually indicates a router, carrier-grade NAT or public-address issue rather than a Mindustry map problem. Recheck the private destination address in the forwarding rule, confirm that the router’s public IP has not changed and ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are blocked. Moving the server to a cloud VM or managed host is the practical alternative when you cannot receive inbound traffic at home.
Players receive a version or mod mismatch
Verify the server JAR release, client release, map and mod files. If a managed host updated automatically, ask whether version pinning or rollback is available. On a self-managed VM, retain the previous JAR and configuration so you can return to the last known-compatible state.

The process stops when you close the terminal
The dedicated JAR must run as a persistent process or service on the machine. Use the operating system’s supported service or session-management method, configure an intentional restart policy and test it after a reboot. A normal in-game host will always end when the game closes; that behavior is expected, not a crash.
A map or configuration was damaged
Stop making changes, preserve the current files for diagnosis and restore the newest known-good backup. Check whether the provider’s backup can restore individual files or only an entire machine snapshot. If you have no tested backup, recovery may be impossible, which is why restoration testing belongs in the purchase decision.
How much should Mindustry hosting cost?
The supplied evidence does not establish a current price that can be responsibly quoted for a specific host. Prices, regions, supported releases and plan limits are volatile. Compare the recurring amount after any promotion and include storage, extra backups, additional players, taxes and setup fees when they apply.
For a small local session, the built-in host has no hosting subscription, but the host device and internet connection remain in use. Managed hosting converts administration time into a recurring bill. A self-managed VM may have a lower sticker price while transferring patching, security, backup and troubleshooting work to you. A “cheap” plan is not economical if it lacks the location, recovery process or controls your group needs.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose built-in hosting if the group is small, local, sessions are temporary and everyone accepts that the world disappears from the network when the host exits.
- Choose managed hosting if continuous availability matters and you prefer a game-specific panel and support over operating-system administration.
- Choose a VPS or cloud VM if you can install Java, operate the JAR, configure TCP/UDP 6567, maintain updates and manage backups, and you need control over files or automation.
- Avoid public home hosting when router access, carrier-grade NAT or IP privacy is a concern; use a cloud machine or managed service instead.
- Before paying, verify the current Mindustry version, player limit, region, map/mod controls, backup and restoration process, support scope, security protections, renewal price and cancellation terms.
What to verify before you press “buy”
Open the provider’s current documentation on the day you subscribe. Confirm that the advertised release is still supported, that the server location is suitable for your players and that the plan permits the maps, mods and administrative access you intend to use. Ask support to explain backup retention and restoration rather than assuming a “backup” label means a downloadable, tested copy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Finally, plan an exit. Keep your world and configuration files in a format you can download, know how to cancel renewal and identify where you could move the server if the provider changes its terms. This portability matters more than a temporary discount when a community world may run for months or years.
