One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a low-cost, low-volume stencil with relatively large surface-mount features, PET/Mylar film is a reasonable place to start—provided your cutter can make clean apertures. Kapton (polyimide) is another film option. If fine detail, consistent results, or repeated printing matter more than making the stencil yourself, choose a custom-cut stainless-steel stencil. The right material depends on your board’s smallest apertures, the cutting method, the paste volume you need, and how many prints you expect.
Which stencil material should you choose?
| Material | Best fit | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| PET/Mylar film | Inexpensive, low-volume prototypes and boards with larger SMD features. | Thin film is readily suited to DIY approaches, but the cutter and process determine whether aperture edges are clean enough. JLCPCB lists PET/Mylar among DIY options in its 2026 guide; Adafruit also suggests a laser-cut Mylar sheet as a way to start. |
| Kapton/polyimide film | DIY prototyping when a film stencil is preferred; JLCPCB associates it with heat resistance and repeated prototyping. | Do not assume a particular hobby laser or cutter will process it cleanly. Compatibility and aperture quality depend on the specific tool and settings. Adafruit names Kapton as a possible laser-cut stencil material. |
| Stainless steel | Repeated use, finer features, and more production-style paste printing. | Usually requires a precision stencil fabrication service or suitable equipment. Thickness still needs to match the board’s features and desired paste deposit. Eurocircuits describes stainless steel as its stencil material and lists available thicknesses in its stencil-making guide. |
| Vinyl | An experimental option for larger SMD features and low-volume prototyping. | JLCPCB mentions vinyl as a possible DIY material, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal grade, thickness, or performance level. |
How to match thickness and apertures to your board
Stencil thickness affects how much paste an aperture can deposit: Eurocircuits states, “With thicker stencils, more paste is printed.” Its technical page lists 70, 100, or 130 microns as thicknesses it can cut; those are that fabricator’s listed options, not a universal set of stencil sizes.

JLCPCB’s 2026 DIY guide recommends 0.10–0.15 mm (4–6 mil) as a general range for sheet stock. Treat this as the manufacturer’s guidance, not a guaranteed fit for every board. Thinner stock deposits less paste and thicker stock more, but the suitable choice also depends on aperture dimensions and shape, paste, board design, and assembly process.

Start with the smallest pad and aperture on the board rather than the largest component. Paste release depends on aperture geometry relative to foil thickness—not simply whether the stencil is Mylar, Kapton, or steel. A 2017 conference paper discusses aperture aspect and area ratios as predictors of release and reports using Mylar and Kapton films alongside a stainless-steel reference stencil: “Rapid-Prototyping Tape Stencils for the Application of Solder Paste.”

What can your cutting method produce?
Adafruit recommends a laser-cut Kapton or Mylar sheet as a way to get started and notes that PCB software can export the solder-paste (cream) layer in Gerber RS274X format. That file provides the stencil pattern, but the material and tool still have to produce usable openings.
Before committing to a sheet, verify that your specific cutter can process it without unacceptable melting, charring, distortion, or ragged aperture edges. A material that is suitable in principle may still produce poor results with a particular tool or setting. JLCPCB’s 2026 guide describes DIY film as better suited to larger SMD features and low-volume prototypes than to demanding fine-pitch work. It gives approximately 0.5 mm pitch as a practical boundary in its own guide; this is a rough rule of thumb, not a guaranteed capability or formal standard.

Decide whether DIY or a steel stencil is the better fit
Use a film stencil when the board is simple enough for your cutting process, the apertures come out clean, and the convenience of making a prototype stencil suits the expected print run. Consider custom-cut stainless steel when repeatability or finer apertures are central, or when tuning a DIY process is not worth the time and uncertainty. The relevant trade-off is not just sheet material: it includes the smallest aperture, paste volume, edge quality, dimensional stability, expected print count, fabrication cost, and time spent getting a DIY method to work.
