It gives you a short, graphical path to a working site. Choose DevKinsta if you want a fuller WordPress bundle with mail testing, database management and logs; wp-env if you contribute to WordPress core or Gutenberg; DDEV if your team needs repeatable, version-controlled Docker environments; and XAMPP if you specifically want hands-on control of Apache, MySQL and PHP.
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on whether you value a friendly interface, exact stack control, WordPress-project alignment or reproducibility across a team.

Quick answer: which MAMP alternative should you use?
| Tool | Best fit | Main reason to choose it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local | Most WordPress site owners, designers and freelancers | Fast graphical setup and a short path to a running WordPress site | Less direct control than a manually assembled stack |
| DevKinsta | Developers who want a bundled WordPress workspace | Installs components and database in the background; includes email inbox, database manager and logging | Its opinionated bundle may be more than a simple site needs |
| wp-env | WordPress core and Gutenberg contributors | Open source, maintained by the WordPress project and recommended for Gutenberg development | Requires command-line familiarity, Docker and Node.js |
| DDEV | Teams and developers managing several repeatable environments | Docker-based environments can be extended, version controlled, shared, started, stopped and removed | Requires comfort with a developer-oriented workflow |
| XAMPP | Learners and developers who want conventional stack control | Free, open source Apache, MySQL and PHP stack | More manual configuration and more repeated WordPress setup work |
The WordPress Developer Blog describes Local as requiring a one-time installation followed by a “short and painless path to an up-and-running WordPress installation.” The same comparison characterizes MAMP, WAMP and XAMPP as more manual because you install or configure components and repeat WordPress setup steps.
What a good MAMP replacement must provide
A local WordPress tool is useful only when its environment is close enough to the site you will eventually run online. WordPress lists PHP 7.4 or greater, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.3 or greater, and HTTPS support as server-side requirements. Before choosing an application, check the PHP and database versions used by your production host and select a local environment that can align with them. Otherwise, a theme or plugin may appear to work locally and fail after deployment.

Setup automation
Graphical applications hide web-server, PHP and database configuration behind a site-creation wizard. That is valuable when your priority is getting a test site running quickly. Conventional stacks expose more of those decisions, which can be educational but also creates more places for a port, service or version mismatch to stop you.
Version control and reproducibility
A single developer can tolerate a one-off setup. A team cannot rely on undocumented local changes. DDEV is designed around environments that can be extended, version controlled and shared. wp-env also follows a project-oriented, command-line workflow suited to contributors who need a predictable WordPress development setup. If several developers must reproduce the same bug, reproducibility matters more than the shortest first launch.
Debugging, mail and database access
WordPress work often involves password-reset messages, form notifications, scheduled tasks and database inspection. DevKinsta explicitly bundles an email inbox, database manager and logging. Those features reduce the need to assemble separate tools for common debugging tasks. Other options can still support the same work, but equivalent bundled features are not documented for them, so verify the exact workflow before standardizing on one.

Consider how you will create, stop, archive and hand off sites. A tool that makes one site easy may become awkward when you maintain several PHP versions or need each project to have its own documented configuration. DDEV’s environments can be started, stopped and removed as projects change, while graphical tools emphasize per-site convenience. For deployment, plan the handoff separately: local development should mirror production versions, but local tools do not automatically make hosting migration risk-free.
Local: the easiest general-purpose choice
Why it stands out
Local is the strongest default recommendation for someone replacing MAMP without wanting to learn Docker or manually assemble a web stack. You install the desktop application once, create a site through its interface and work with WordPress instead of configuring every underlying service. That makes it particularly suitable for designers, content teams, freelancers and developers who need several disposable sites for theme or plugin work.
The WordPress Developer Blog’s description is useful because it focuses on the actual first-run experience: after installation, the route to an up-and-running WordPress site is short and painless. By contrast, a conventional MAMP-style setup can require installing components, selecting versions, creating a database and repeating WordPress installation steps.

Where Local fits best
- Building a theme or plugin without touching a production site.
- Creating a client demo or staging copy quickly.
- Testing WordPress settings in a graphical interface.
- Onboarding a teammate who is comfortable with WordPress but not server administration.
What to verify before standardizing on it
Confirm that the PHP and database versions available in your Local setup can match the target host. Check how your team will share site files, database exports and configuration, because a GUI-created site is not automatically a reproducible team environment. Also decide how email, logs and database inspection will be handled if the built-in workflow does not cover your project.

DevKinsta: a bundled WordPress suite
What you get
DevKinsta installs the required components and database in the background rather than asking you to assemble them manually. Kinsta documents an email inbox, database manager and logging as part of the application, which makes it attractive for developers who want common WordPress debugging tools in one place.
DevKinsta runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, so it is the clearest choice in this group when a team needs a documented desktop tool across all three operating-system families. It does not require a Kinsta hosting plan.
When DevKinsta is preferable to Local
- You need to inspect database records regularly.
- You test emails and want a local inbox rather than sending messages externally.
- Logs are part of your normal troubleshooting routine.
- Your team includes Linux users and you want one named application documented for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Trade-offs
A bundled suite is convenient because it makes several services available together, but it can feel heavier than a minimal local site. If your only requirement is to open a basic WordPress installation and edit a theme, Local’s simpler path may be enough. If your project depends on matching a very specific production stack, inspect the available PHP and database choices rather than assuming any bundled environment is identical to production.
wp-env: the WordPress-project choice for core and Gutenberg
Why contributors use it
The WordPress Block Editor Handbook describes wp-env as open source, maintained by the WordPress project itself and recommended for Gutenberg development. That alignment matters when you are testing changes against WordPress core or the block editor rather than simply building a site with released plugins.
wp-env is a development tool, not a point-and-click replacement aimed at every beginner. Its workflow assumes command-line familiarity and requires Docker and Node.js. Those prerequisites add setup work, but they also make the environment fit naturally into a code repository and contributor workflow.

- 6-core Intel Core i5 processor
- Intel UHD Graphics 630
- 8GB 2666MHz DDR4
- Ultrafast SSD storage
- Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, one HDMI 2. 0 port, and two USB 3 ports
Choose wp-env when
- You contribute to Gutenberg or WordPress core.
- Your project already uses Node.js tooling and Docker.
- You want environment configuration to live alongside source code.
- You need to recreate a test setup repeatedly while reviewing patches.
Plan for the prerequisites
- Install a supported Docker installation and verify that it can run containers.
- Install Node.js and make sure your project’s Node-based tooling works.
- Follow the WordPress project’s wp-env setup for the repository you are contributing to.
- Start the environment, run the project’s tests or development commands, and stop it when finished.
- Keep the environment configuration with the project so another contributor can reproduce it.
If you only want to create a few client sites through a graphical wizard, wp-env is likely unnecessary complexity. Its advantage appears when WordPress source code, automated tests and repeatability are the work itself.
DDEV: repeatable environments for teams
What makes DDEV different
DDEV describes itself as an open source tool for launching local web development environments in minutes. Its Docker workflow supports PHP and Node.js, and its environments can be extended, version controlled, shared, started, stopped and removed. Those properties address the problems that arise when a team has several projects or needs to reproduce a production-like bug.
Use DDEV when reproducibility is the priority
- Several developers must use the same PHP and service configuration.
- You need project settings reviewed in version control.
- You regularly switch between client projects.
- Your team wants a documented start-and-stop workflow rather than an individually configured desktop stack.
- Node.js and PHP are both part of the development process.
DDEV compared with wp-env
Both tools fit developers who are comfortable with containers and command-line work, but their center of gravity differs. wp-env is maintained by WordPress and explicitly recommended for Gutenberg development. DDEV is a broader environment workflow intended for shareable, version-controlled projects and supports PHP and Node.js through Docker. Choose wp-env when WordPress-project alignment is the deciding factor; choose DDEV when team-wide environment management is the deciding factor.
Adoption checklist
- Install Docker and confirm that your machine can start containers reliably.
- Install DDEV and initialize a project in the directory that will hold its code.
- Record the PHP, database and Node.js choices in the project configuration.
- Commit the configuration so teammates can use the same environment.
- Start and stop the project through DDEV’s documented workflow, and remove disposable environments when they are no longer needed.
DDEV does not eliminate the need to understand WordPress deployment. It makes local configuration repeatable; you still need a deliberate process for moving code, database content, uploads and environment-specific settings to production.
XAMPP: conventional stack control
Why it remains relevant
WordPress lists XAMPP as free and open source. Automattic describes its conventional Apache, MySQL and PHP components and its fit for flexibility and control. If you want to understand how a web server, PHP runtime and database fit together, XAMPP exposes those building blocks instead of hiding them behind a WordPress-specific wizard.
Who should choose it
- Students learning the parts of a PHP application stack.
- Developers who need direct control over Apache, MySQL and PHP services.
- People maintaining legacy projects whose documentation already assumes a conventional stack.
- Anyone who values a free, open source option and accepts more setup responsibility.
The cost of control
You are responsible for configuring the components, choosing compatible versions, creating the database and repeating WordPress setup steps. That is not a flaw if learning or control is your goal, but it is slower than a WordPress-focused application for routine site creation. Record your settings as you go; otherwise, reproducing the same environment later can be difficult.

How to choose in common situations
“I want the easiest way to run WordPress locally.”
Start with Local. Its graphical workflow minimizes server administration and is the closest match to that requirement.
“I need Windows, Mac and Linux support.”
DevKinsta is the option in this comparison explicitly documented for Windows, Mac and Linux. Confirm current system requirements before deployment across a managed fleet.
“I work on Gutenberg or WordPress core.”
Use wp-env. The Block Editor Handbook calls it the recommended tool for Gutenberg development, and its open-source, WordPress-maintained status fits project contribution work.
“Our team keeps getting ‘works on my machine’ problems.”
Evaluate DDEV first. Its stated strengths—version-controlled, shareable and extendable Docker environments—directly address that problem.
“I want to learn what the stack is doing.”
Choose XAMPP and accept the extra configuration. Working directly with Apache, MySQL and PHP teaches concepts that a graphical WordPress application intentionally hides.

Migration and production-parity checklist
Whichever alternative you pick, use this checklist before trusting local test results:
- Record the production PHP version and select the same major and minor version locally where the tool allows it.
- Record whether production uses MySQL or MariaDB and match the documented minimums: MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.3, with PHP 7.4 or greater.
- Enable or test HTTPS locally when a plugin, cookie or API integration depends on it.
- Use a database copy that reflects the structure and relevant content of production, while removing credentials and sensitive personal data.
- Test email behavior in a safe local inbox or other non-production workflow; do not send test messages to real customers accidentally.
- Document uploads, scheduled tasks, environment variables and external API keys that cannot be reproduced locally.
- Before deployment, test the same theme and plugin changes against a staging environment that matches production more closely than a developer laptop.
Common failure modes and fixes
The site works locally but fails after deployment
Check PHP and database versions first. A local tool that silently uses a different runtime can hide compatibility problems. Compare HTTPS behavior, enabled services and environment-specific configuration next.
A teammate cannot reproduce the bug
Move from undocumented desktop settings to a project configuration that can be shared and version controlled. DDEV is designed for this need; wp-env is similarly appropriate when the work belongs to a WordPress project repository.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Email tests are confusing
Use a local inbox or another captured-mail workflow and document it for everyone. DevKinsta includes an email inbox, which can simplify this requirement.
The setup feels too complicated
Reduce the scope. If you are building an ordinary site rather than contributing to core or managing a team platform, start with Local or DevKinsta instead of adopting Docker and command-line tooling prematurely.
Database changes are hard to inspect
Choose a workflow with a database manager or add a documented database inspection tool. DevKinsta includes a database manager; the other options require you to verify and standardize your preferred approach.
Bottom line
Pick Local for the simplest general WordPress experience, DevKinsta for a bundled suite with mail, database and logging utilities, wp-env for Gutenberg and WordPress core work, DDEV for reproducible team environments, and XAMPP for free, hands-on Apache, MySQL and PHP control. Match PHP, database and HTTPS behavior to production before treating any local result as conclusive.
