OBS Studio is the best first macOS app to evaluate for sending prerecorded video to YouTube Live: YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, and OBS is a widely used streaming-encoder candidate. But the available evidence does not establish it as the definitive best app for unattended, continuous playback. What makes an app suitable for 24/7 prerecorded streaming?
A normal live broadcast sends an encoder’s output to YouTube. For a prerecorded stream, the encoder must also keep the selected video or playlist playing in the intended order, with audio, for as long as the broadcast runs. Continuous operation adds another requirement: the setup must cope with interruptions rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain live.

YouTube documents encoder streaming, supported ingest settings and stream-health checks. Its guidance does not compare current macOS apps for playlist looping, unattended restarts or 24/7 reliability. Treat OBS as a sensible candidate to test, not as a verified uptime guarantee.
Why start with OBS Studio?
OBS Studio is a software encoder option to evaluate on a Mac. YouTube’s live-stream tips recognize software encoders as a way to broadcast, but do not rank OBS against other macOS applications for looping prerecorded video. The OBS Help Portal is available at obsproject.com/help; the reviewed material does not establish current macOS requirements or exactly how a selected media source behaves when a file ends.

Before relying on any particular OBS setup, check in the current version that the chosen media source or playlist repeats as you intend, audio continues, and playback resumes as expected after a file ends. These are checks to perform, not claims that a particular built-in source or playlist feature will meet every 24/7 use case.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or prepare the stream and follow its encoder setup flow. YouTube says encoder settings are detected by default; manual resolution and frame-rate settings are available with a custom stream key. Keep the stream key private and enter it only in your encoder.
- Choose an ingest protocol. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which Google describes as RTMP tunneled through SSL. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Configure and test the encoder. Match its codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current published settings below. Start a test broadcast, inspect the YouTube preview and stream health, and check both motion and audio before depending on the setup.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings as the starting point
The following are YouTube’s published recommendations, not independent benchmark results or a guarantee that a particular Mac or connection can sustain them. The bitrate figures are video ingest bitrate; they are not a complete household bandwidth estimate.

For other resolutions, frame rates or codec combinations, use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table rather than extrapolating from the 1080p30 examples. A connection that can briefly reach a target speed may still be unsuitable if it cannot sustain the upload reliably.
Keep a Mac-hosted stream running
A local encoder has direct control over the playback and broadcast setup, but it also makes the Mac and its network part of the stream path. You must decide how to handle sleep, app closure, power or network interruptions, and checking whether the broadcast is still healthy. YouTube and OBS’s cited help material do not promise unattended uptime or automatic recovery for a particular configuration.

- Verify the full playlist and its transition or repeat behavior using the exact files you plan to stream.
- Check that audio remains present throughout, including quiet sections and file changes.
- Confirm the Mac does not sleep or interrupt the encoder during a long test, and that the network remains connected.
- Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators during testing; a successful connection alone does not prove that viewers receive usable audio and video.
- Plan how you will notice and respond to an encoder crash, lost connection or YouTube ingest interruption. Test recovery rather than assuming a restart will happen unattended.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality. Its live-streaming tips also say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That does not remove the need for a stable setup when the target is continuous operation. Read YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Follow YouTube’s content rules
Using prerecorded video does not exempt a live stream from YouTube’s rules. YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; review the applicable requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance. A 24/7 loop is not, by itself, evidence that a channel or stream qualifies for monetization. Ensure you have the rights needed for the video, music and other material you broadcast.
