NordVPN, Mullvad, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN appear in current Mac coverage; a free plan changes the shortlist further. Choose by checking macOS app fit, privacy evidence, safety features, and the limits of the reviewer’s speed tests—not by treating any ranking as a universal result.
How to choose a Mac VPN
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a provider’s servers. It can be useful when you want to reduce exposure on networks you do not trust, but it does not make you anonymous or replace security features built into your browser, websites, and devices. RTINGS notes that always-on VPN use may not be necessary for every risk profile. RTINGS’ Mac VPN guide discusses those trade-offs.

Check the Mac app, not just the service name
Confirm that the current app supports your macOS version and works as expected on your Mac. Relevant details include Apple Silicon support, menu-bar integration, and compatibility with the wider macOS ecosystem—criteria Security.org says it considers in its Mac VPN evaluations. App features can differ by distribution method, too: Tom’s Guide reports differences between NordVPN’s Mac App Store and direct-download builds, including kill-switch behavior. Check the current app listing and provider documentation for the version you plan to use.

A provider’s no-logs statement is a claim about its practices, not proof that you will be anonymous. Look for independent verification, then check what the audit actually examined and when. Security.org says it evaluates independent support for no-logs claims; RTINGS discusses trade-offs in policy and audit scope. Neither an audit nor a VPN connection guarantees complete privacy.

Compare safety features and speed evidence
Check whether the Mac app includes a kill switch, which protocols it offers, and what leak protections are available. Feature availability may differ between platforms or app builds, so a feature listed for a service should not automatically be assumed to exist in every Mac version.
Speed results are meaningful only alongside their test conditions. Macworld says it tested 12 VPN services on a MacBook Pro, checking speeds at three times of day over a 100 Mbps ethernet connection. That describes Macworld’s test setup; it does not predict the result on your Mac, connection, protocol, or chosen server. See Macworld’s methods and Mac VPN picks for its account.

When a free Mac VPN may be enough
A free plan can suit occasional use, but compare its specific limits with what you need. RTINGS distinguishes Windscribe Free and Proton VPN Free, discussing restrictions such as monthly data allowance, server choice, and feature availability. Those plans are not equivalent, and a free tier should not be assumed to include every feature of the provider’s paid app. Check the current plan page for exact limits; the reviewed material does not establish a complete current comparison of allowances.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before subscribing
Prices, renewal rates, device limits, refund terms, supported macOS versions, protocol availability, and streaming results can change and may vary by region or plan. The available reviews do not establish a complete, verified price comparison, so check the provider’s current terms before paying. For a Mac App Store install, compare the listing with the provider’s direct-download documentation if a specific feature—especially the kill switch—matters to you.
