For a playlist playing continuously on a Mac, the current base Mac mini with M6 is the proportionate starting point. Apple lists a hardware video decode engine, 16 GB of unified memory, and a 256 GB SSD in its base configuration—specifications consistent with straightforward video playback, though not proof of tested 24/7 performance. If by “stream” you mean broadcasting a live program to YouTube viewers, rather than playing a playlist locally, a Mac mini is only one possible setup: the available specifications do not establish the encoder, broadcast workflow, or required upload connection.
First, distinguish playlist playback from a live broadcast
A YouTube playlist can mean videos played on a Mac mini for local viewing, or a continuous live program sent from the Mac to YouTube. These are different workloads. The model recommendation below concerns straightforward playlist playback on the computer. Apple’s published specifications do not establish the encoder settings, YouTube configuration, or network requirements for a 24/7 broadcast.

| Model | Starting configuration in Apple’s 2026 specifications | Relevant connections and media features | Fit for simple playlist playback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini with M6 | 16 GB unified memory; 256 GB SSD | Hardware video decode engine, HDMI, Ethernet, Thunderbolt 4 | Proportionate starting point. The recommendation is an inference from the listed hardware video decode engine, not a hands-on 24/7 test. |
| Mac mini with M5 Pro | 24 GB unified memory; 512 GB SSD | Hardware video decode engine, HDMI, Ethernet, Thunderbolt 5 | Apple’s listed specifications do not show a practical advantage for simple playlist playback. Consider it for greater memory or storage needs, connectivity preferences, or additional production and encoding work. |

What matters in a computer that stays on
Video playback and storage
The M6 model’s hardware video decode engine is relevant to playing video, and 16 GB of unified memory with a 256 GB SSD is the base configuration Apple lists. That supports choosing the base model for a simple playback role; it does not demonstrate uninterrupted operation, a particular playlist capacity, or system lifespan. Check that the SSD has room for the videos and other files you plan to keep locally.
Network connection
The current M6 specifications include Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7. Wired Ethernet is a reasonable option when the Mac is stationary and the router and network support it, but the available specifications do not establish that Ethernet is required. For a live broadcast, the needed upload speed and stream settings depend on the chosen workflow; no specific YouTube bitrate or upload requirement is established here.
Power, temperature, and noise
Apple lists an operating-temperature range of 10°–35° C and idle sound pressure of 5 dBA at the operator position for the current Mac mini specifications. These are manufacturer specifications, not an endurance guarantee.
Apple’s power-consumption figures are for specified 2024 systems, not M6 models or measured YouTube playback: the M4 Mac mini configuration with 16 GB memory and 256 GB SSD is listed at 4 W idle and 65 W maximum; the M4 Pro configuration with 64 GB memory and 8 TB SSD is listed at 5 W idle and 140 W maximum. Apple says these wall measurements include power-supply and system losses, and describes “CPU Max” as a compute-intensive application maximizing processor use. They should not be treated as continuous playback readings or used to claim a precise annual electricity bill. See Apple’s Mac mini power-consumption and thermal-output information.
ENERGY STAR’s record for the M4 A3238 configuration lists 2.4 W long idle, 2.8 W short idle, 0.6 W sleep, and 0.1 W off. Those are standardized states for that M4 record, certified on 2025-10-16 for the United States and Canada; they are not active playback figures or an M6 certification claim. See the ENERGY STAR certification record.

Setup considerations for a local playlist
Apple’s cited specifications establish hardware and connections, but they do not prescribe a specific playlist app, sleep setting, or YouTube live setup. For local playback, choose the player and playlist source you intend to use, confirm the files play correctly, and check the Mac’s power and display-sleep behavior for your needs. Do not infer that a Mac mini will automatically broadcast a playlist to YouTube merely because it can play video.
If your goal is a public 24/7 YouTube live stream, first select a streaming workflow and confirm its requirements for video encoding, stream key handling, network upload, and recovery after interruptions. Those details are not established by the Mac mini specifications cited here.
