Confirm that OBS can use a working hardware encoder on the exact system, then test its cooling, network connection, and stability with your own video and stream settings before leaving it unattended.
What makes a mini PC suitable for an OBS loop?
A single prerecorded video with a simple scene is a lighter workload than several high-resolution sources, browser overlays, filters, capture devices, or simultaneous local recording. The hardware you need depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS cautions that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” OBS System Requirements

For a shortlist, consider an Intel N100-class mini PC with 16 GB RAM, an SSD, wired Ethernet, and cooling intended for sustained operation. This is a starting point, not a tested model recommendation: processor specifications do not establish a mini PC’s cooling, BIOS, ports, noise, wall power, or 24/7 reliability. Intel’s N100 product page describes the processor, not the behavior of every computer built around it.

OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because it moves encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware. Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) is supported on compatible Intel HD Graphics, but its availability in OBS can depend on the operating system, graphics driver, and adapter configuration. Check that OBS actually offers and can use the encoder on the device you plan to buy; do not infer compatibility from the processor label alone. OBS Hardware Encoding

Assess the whole system, not just the processor
- Cooling and stability: Look for a design suitable for sustained load and test it for the intended run length.
- Playback plus encoding: Verify the system can decode the actual video while encoding the stream and running any scene sources, overlays, or filters.
- Network: Prefer wired Ethernet where practical and evaluate the reliability and upload capacity of the actual connection.
- Memory, storage, and ports: Check that the RAM and SSD meet your workload and that there are enough ports for any audio or capture peripherals.
- Power and noise: Compare measured wall power during idle, playback, and live encoding. A processor power rating is not a measurement of the complete computer’s consumption.
- Unattended use: Consider warranty and support, noise, and how the machine behaves after a restart or temporary network interruption.
Set OBS and YouTube’s live-encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to YouTube’s servers. The H.264 bitrate recommendations below are platform guidance, not a guarantee of picture quality or sufficient upload capacity for your connection. YouTube encoder settings
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a resolution and frame rate your source video and system can sustain. Set the bitrate to the applicable YouTube recommendation as a starting point, then confirm your connection can carry the stream steadily. YouTube recommends leaving roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate. A speed test alone does not prove the full stream will remain stable, so test the complete setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube streaming tips

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Build and test the loop before leaving it unattended
- Prepare the source and scene. Use the actual video you intend to loop, add it to a simple OBS scene, and include only the sources, overlays, filters, and audio you genuinely need.
- Configure the output. In OBS, select an encoder that is available and working on the mini PC. Set H.264, CBR, the chosen resolution and frame rate, the relevant bitrate from YouTube’s table, and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds).
- Connect the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, set up the live stream and use its encoder connection details in OBS. Keep the stream key private. Prefer the RTMPS server option when configuring the connection if it is available for your setup.
- Check bandwidth and preview. Confirm that the available upload bandwidth leaves YouTube’s recommended headroom, start a test transmission, and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the setup.
- Run a representative endurance test. Use your intended file, OBS scene, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, network, and planned run duration. Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, thermal problems, audio/video issues, and whether the stream recovers after an interruption.
- Check archive expectations. YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not establish the same promise for longer sessions. Plan separately if you need a dependable archive of a longer broadcast. YouTube encoder setup help
How to choose between specific mini PCs
There is not enough evidence here to rank named devices: no controlled comparison establishes their sustained performance, wall power, or continuous-stream endurance. Compare candidate models against the same workload rather than treating “N100” as a guarantee. A practical search phrase is “Intel N100 mini PC 16GB RAM SSD”; it identifies a category to investigate, not a certification that every result is suitable.
- Does OBS expose a working hardware encoder with the candidate’s current operating system and graphics driver?
- Can it play the loop and encode at your intended settings with your real scene sources?
- Does it remain stable and adequately cooled for your planned run length?
- Does its Ethernet connection and your internet upload path stay reliable during a complete test?
- What is its measured wall power during idle, playback, and live encoding, and what are its noise, support, warranty, and restart characteristics?
Troubleshooting common problems
OBS does not show a hardware encoder
Confirm the mini PC’s graphics adapter and operating system support the encoder, update or reinstall the appropriate graphics driver, and check OBS’s encoder options again. QSV availability can depend on driver and adapter configuration. If it still does not appear, do not assume the device can use hardware encoding just because its CPU is Intel; reassess the configuration and test any alternative encoder against the workload.

OBS reports encoding overload or the stream drops frames
Check whether the encoder is actually using hardware acceleration, then reduce the load by testing a lower resolution or frame rate, simplifying the scene, or removing unnecessary filters and browser sources. Verify that the video can play smoothly at the same time. If changing settings, rerun a full test at the new configuration rather than assuming it solved the issue.
YouTube reports unstable bandwidth or poor stream health
Check the upload connection under the same conditions as the planned broadcast, use wired Ethernet where possible, and ensure the bitrate leaves approximately 20% bandwidth headroom. Inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and preview during a test. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output demand and test again.

The stream stops after a long run or the mini PC becomes unstable
Look for thermal problems, dropped frames, system sleep or restart behavior, driver issues, and network interruptions. Test the intended run duration on the actual machine and confirm how the stream behaves after a connection loss; a short successful preview does not establish unattended reliability.

A long broadcast is missing from the archive
YouTube’s cited setup guidance guarantees automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not for longer sessions. Do not rely on a longer live session as your only copy of important content.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube loop rather than running OBS on a physical computer, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-to-live service.
