For a single prerecorded video that is already encoded, compare small Linux VPS plans with at least 2 vCPUs and 2–4 GB of RAM, then check the outbound-transfer allowance before choosing. Amazon Lightsail’s published IPv4 Linux/Unix example is a useful price-and-spec reference: AWS lists 2 vCPUs, 2 GB of memory, 60 GB of SSD storage, and 3 TB of transfer for $12 per month. It is not a universal cheapest option: price, allowance, and availability vary by region, and excess outbound transfer can cost extra.
If you want the stream to keep running without maintaining a server, StreamNeo is the managed alternative to compare: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, with one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps and a free first day.

A server that repeatedly sends a finished, pre-encoded file has a different resource profile from a desktop-style OBS setup or a server encoding live video. Choose the plan for the work it must do, not just for the phrase “YouTube streaming.” A 2026 Space-Node guide recommends 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM as a starting point for a static FFmpeg loop when the file is encoded locally; that is a published recommendation, not a performance benchmark.
| Workload | Published starting point or guidance | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| One pre-encoded file looped with FFmpeg | 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM, per Space-Node’s 2026 guide | Keep the video on the server or otherwise accessible, and calculate the storage and outbound transfer you need. |
| OBS scenes or browser sources | Space-Node’s 2026 guide lists 4 vCPU/8 GB RAM as a 720p starter and 6 vCPU/12 GB for 1080p with browser sources. | Do not assume the lighter static-loop baseline is enough for a desktop-style workload. |
| Live transcoding or multiple outputs | Expect a larger CPU requirement. Inservers recommends four vCores as a minimum for real-time 1080p transcoding on its India-focused service. | This is vendor advice, not a general benchmark. Test the actual encoding path on the plan you intend to use. |
For a static loop, pre-encoding the media before upload avoids making the VPS perform that encoding continuously. If you need to change resolution or bitrate on the server, budget for the additional CPU work and validate it with a real session.

Budget for outbound transfer, not just the VPS headline price
Video leaves the server continuously, so its configured bitrate can determine whether the included transfer is sufficient. Inservers estimates that one 1080p stream uses approximately 6–8 Mbps. At a constant rate for 30 days, that is about 1.94–2.59 decimal TB of data, calculated as bitrate × seconds ÷ 8. This is a calculation from the provider’s estimate, not observed usage; actual bitrate, reconnects, protocol overhead, and the host’s billing definitions can change the total.
AWS says Lightsail counts both inbound and outbound transfer toward the allowance, but charges for transfer above the allowance only when it is outbound. The allowance differs by region. A 3 TB allowance is therefore above the calculated 6–8 Mbps example, but check the terms for your chosen region and calculate using your own output bitrate. AWS describes Lightsail as offering “a low, predictable price”; that is AWS’s marketing language, not an independent assessment.

Low-cost VPS options to compare
These are published plan details and vendor claims, not independent performance tests. Prices and availability can change, so verify the provider’s current page and terms for your region before buying.
| Option | Published details | Fit and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Lightsail, Linux/Unix with IPv4 | AWS lists $12/month for 2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB SSD, and 3 TB transfer. | A useful published comparison point for a single pre-encoded loop. Check regional billing terms, allowance, taxes, and current availability. |
| Hetzner Cloud cost-optimized plans | Hetzner describes these plans for tests, development, smaller projects, and low-to-medium CPU use; EU servers include at least 20 TB of traffic. Its CX23 was marked unavailable when checked. | Do not assume the CX23 is purchasable or quote a current price without checking. Hetzner states that a server bill will not exceed its monthly price cap; that describes its billing cap, not uninterrupted service or guaranteed network performance. |
| Inservers streaming VPS, India | The India-specific page lists ₹880/month for a 2-vCore/4-GB basic plan and claims 1 Gbps unmetered transfer. It recommends that tier for one 1080p60 relay without transcoding. | These are regional product details and provider claims. The page concerns India and relaying; it does not independently establish suitability or performance for every YouTube stream. |
| Space-Node streaming VPS | Its guide describes a managed OBS VPS from €9.99/month and separately discusses a small FFmpeg VPS setup. | The guide is published by a seller. Check current plan details and terms, and distinguish its managed OBS offer from the resources needed for your own FFmpeg server. |
There is no defensible single cheapest VPS for every reader: location, taxes, IP requirements, transfer use, plan availability, and overages affect the total. The listed plans are useful comparisons, not a guarantee that any provider will deliver a particular stream quality or uptime.

Set up a self-managed VPS for a prerecorded loop
The exact installation commands depend on the VPS distribution and how you store the media, so use commands appropriate to the operating system you selected. The operational sequence below covers the decisions that matter without assuming a provider-specific image or inventing a tested configuration.
- Confirm YouTube access before buying around a launch date. Enable live streaming for the channel and check YouTube Studio for any current eligibility or activation requirements. New channels may need to enable live access in advance. Current continuous-stream rules and eligibility are not established by the provider guides cited here; confirm them in YouTube’s official help and live-control-room documentation before relying on a nonstop broadcast.
- Create a Linux VPS sized for the pipeline. For a static loop using a locally encoded file, use the 2-vCPU, 2–4-GB-RAM recommendation as a plan-comparison baseline, not a guarantee. Add resources if you will use OBS scenes, browser sources, live transcoding, or multiple outputs.
- Prepare and upload the recording. Encode the file before it reaches the server if you want to avoid continuous server-side encoding. Confirm that its format, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suit your intended YouTube output. Ensure the VPS storage has room for the media and any other files your setup requires.
- Create a YouTube stream and protect its key. In YouTube Studio’s live controls, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into the streaming software’s configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a repository, expose it in public logs, or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Configure FFmpeg to loop the file and send it to YouTube. Use a looped input and the stream URL/key supplied by YouTube. Keep the output bitrate stable and ensure the selected encoding settings are compatible with the file and your available CPU. The cited material does not establish one universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or FFmpeg command for every channel and video, so check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and match settings to your intended quality rather than copying arbitrary values.
- Keep the process alive and observable. Configure a process supervisor or restart policy so the job can recover after a process exit or server reboot. Keep logs useful but rotate them; ensure logs do not reveal the stream key. Add basic monitoring so you can tell when the process stops or loses its connection.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Check YouTube’s stream health and the live output, then run a test for at least an hour as recommended by the Space-Node guide. Reboot the VPS once to confirm that the stream process starts as intended, and verify that a reconnect does not leave the broadcast stopped.
Copyright, reused content, and the limits of a continuous stream
Only stream video and audio you own or are authorized to use. A loop being prerecorded does not make its music, footage, or other material free of rights restrictions. The cited setup guide recommends rights-cleared media, but it is not an authoritative statement of YouTube policy; check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content.

Do not assume that running a stream continuously will generate views, watch hours, or revenue. A nonstop broadcast is a delivery method, not a guarantee of audience or monetization. Check current YouTube rules for live streams, reused content, and eligibility before building a channel plan around a loop.
Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops when the VPS process exits: check the FFmpeg exit logs and configure a supervisor or restart policy; confirm it starts after a server reboot.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the output buffers: compare the configured bitrate with the VPS network path and your transfer assumptions; use stable settings and test the actual session. Avoid raising bitrate without checking its effect on monthly transfer.
- The server runs hot or the stream becomes unstable during encoding: verify whether the file is being transcoded rather than simply sent, then compare CPU use against the workload. Pre-encode locally or move to a plan sized for the encoding task.
- The stream fails to connect: check that the correct stream key and ingest URL are configured and that live access is enabled for the channel. If a key may have leaked, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the server configuration.
- The bill exceeds the plan price: review outbound usage against the selected region’s transfer allowance and overage policy. A constant stream can consume terabytes in a month even when the VPS uses little CPU.
- The stream does not restart after maintenance: check the process supervisor, boot configuration, and logs, then run a deliberate reboot test before relying on the setup.
