Start with Qwen 3.5 4B. NVIDIA currently places it in its recommended starting tier for RTX cards with 6–8GB of VRAM. It is the clearest fit for an 8GB card, provided you choose an appropriate quantized build, keep the context window reasonable, and leave memory for the inference runtime. Qwen 3.5 9B is listed in NVIDIA’s broader 8–16GB tier and may be worth testing, but it is not a guaranteed fit on every 8GB GPU.
The best starting choices for 8GB VRAM
“Best” depends on whether you value response quality, speed, coding ability, document question-answering, or the largest possible context. There is no controlled, dated benchmark in the available guidance that ranks these models on one standard 8GB system. The recommendations below therefore separate NVIDIA’s hardware-tier guidance from practical fit considerations.

| Model or configuration | Published memory guidance | What an 8GB owner should expect | Most suitable starting use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen 3.5 4B | NVIDIA lists it for the 6–8GB RTX tier. | Directly matched recommendation. A suitable quantized file and moderate context should leave usable headroom. | General chat, lightweight coding, and document Q&A |
| Qwen 3.5 9B | NVIDIA’s llama.cpp playbook places it in an 8–16GB tier. | Possible to test with an appropriate quantization and settings; not a promise that the complete model will fit on every 8GB card. | Higher-capability trials when you can accept tighter memory limits |
| Llama 3.1 8B in NVIDIA NIM | bf16: 16GB minimum, 33GB recommended. fp8: 8GB minimum, 16GB recommended. | Those figures apply to this NIM deployment, not to every GGUF, llama.cpp, or other quantized build. An 8GB card is at the stated fp8 minimum, with no stated margin. | Only when your chosen NIM configuration and platform meet its requirements |
The practical order is therefore simple: try Qwen 3.5 4B first, then test a carefully chosen Qwen 3.5 9B quantization if the smaller model is not sufficient. Treat an 8B model’s parameter label as a starting point for investigation, not as a VRAM specification.

Weights and precision
Parameter count describes the scale of a model, but the stored weight format determines how much memory those parameters consume. Full-precision or higher-precision weights require more VRAM. Quantization stores weights at lower precision so a model can run in less memory. NVIDIA identifies Q4_K_M and NVFP4 as useful balance points in their respective guidance, but they are backend- and model-specific formats, not interchangeable promises of identical quality or memory use.

More aggressive quantization can make a model fit when a higher-precision version does not. The trade-off is possible loss of answer quality. A model that technically loads but produces noticeably weaker code, inaccurate extraction, or less coherent answers may be a worse choice than a smaller model in a less aggressive format.
Context memory
The model’s context window is additional memory pressure. As you increase the number of tokens retained from the conversation or supplied document, the runtime must maintain a larger attention cache. A model that loads at a short context can fail, slow down, or force offloading when you select a much longer one. Set context for the work you actually do instead of selecting the largest advertised window by default.
Runtime headroom
The model file is not the entire VRAM budget. The inference backend, temporary buffers, attention cache, and other application use also need memory. NVIDIA’s recommendation to use the most powerful model that fits comfortably matters here: a configuration that consumes virtually all 8GB leaves little room for context growth or normal runtime overhead.
Qwen 3.5 4B: the sensible first installation
NVIDIA currently names Qwen 3.5 4B as its starting model for RTX systems in the 6–8GB category. That is vendor guidance, not a comparative laboratory benchmark, but it directly matches the capacity in this article.
Where it makes sense
- Everyday conversational assistance where local execution and predictable memory use matter.
- Small coding tasks, explanations, and edits that you can verify yourself.
- Document question-answering over modest amounts of text, especially when you control the context length.
How to configure it
Choose a quantized model variant supported by your inference backend, begin with a moderate context setting, and watch actual VRAM use while generating. If the model loads comfortably and your representative prompts remain accurate, increase context or precision one change at a time. Do not change several settings together; otherwise you will not know which change caused an allocation failure or quality regression.

Qwen 3.5 9B: a test candidate, not a guaranteed 8GB model
A separate NVIDIA llama.cpp playbook places Qwen 3.5 9B in an 8–16GB tier. That wider tier means an 8GB card is at the lower boundary, not that every 9B build will fit entirely in 8GB. The exact model file, quantization, context, backend buffers, operating system, and GPU all affect the result.
When to try it
- You have already tested the smaller model and need more capability for your prompts.
- You are willing to use a lower-precision build and a conservative context.
- You can accept that part of the model may need to run outside VRAM, with a corresponding performance or usability penalty, if your backend permits that arrangement.
How to judge success
Do not stop at “the file loaded.” Run the same chat, coding, and document prompts you used with the 4B model. Check whether answers remain coherent, whether the context is long enough for your documents, and whether memory errors occur after several turns. If the 9B configuration requires severe context restrictions or produces unacceptable latency, the 4B model may be the more useful choice.
Why the Llama 3.1 8B figures need careful reading
NVIDIA’s NIM system card for Llama 3.1 8B illustrates why model names cannot be converted directly into universal VRAM requirements. It lists 16GB minimum and 33GB recommended for bf16, while fp8 is listed at 8GB minimum and 16GB recommended. These numbers describe that NIM deployment. They are not requirements for every GGUF file, llama.cpp build, or other quantized implementation of the model.
An 8GB card therefore sits exactly at the published fp8 minimum for that NIM configuration, with no stated operating margin. Confirm the NIM-supported GPU, software stack, and any additional requirements before treating it as an option. If your goal is simply to run a local model on an 8GB card, the Qwen 3.5 4B recommendation has a clearer capacity match.
Choose by task, then measure quality on your own prompts
NVIDIA recommends selecting a model for the intended use case and evaluating candidates rather than assuming one universal winner. A useful test set can be small, but it should represent the work you actually do.

Chat and writing
Use several factual questions, a multi-step instruction, and a request to revise text in a specified tone. Check instruction following, factual restraint, and whether the model maintains details over multiple turns. A fluent answer is not automatically a correct one.

Coding
Test a function from your own stack, an error explanation, and a change request that includes constraints. Compile or run generated code where appropriate. Compare not only whether the model produces code, but whether it preserves existing interfaces and catches edge cases.
Document question-answering
Use documents with known answers, including at least one question whose answer is not present. Check whether the model cites or clearly distinguishes supplied text from inference. Keep the context setting fixed while comparing models so memory changes do not disguise a quality difference.
Record the configuration
- Exact model file and quantization format
- Context length and any batch or cache settings
- GPU model and available VRAM
- Operating system, driver, and inference backend
- Whether the backend kept all layers in VRAM or offloaded some work
No reliable token-per-second ranking for these models on a named 8GB system is established here. Avoid treating a speed claim from a different GPU, driver, context, or quantization as a prediction for your machine.
Compatibility checklist before downloading a model
1. Identify the exact GPU
Capacity alone is insufficient. Record the precise GPU model and architecture, not just “8GB NVIDIA” or “8GB AMD.” Different generations can have different instruction support and driver requirements.

2. Check the driver and compute capability
Ollama’s current GPU documentation lists NVIDIA support for compute capability 5.0 or newer with driver 550 or newer. It says cards with compute capability 5.0 through 6.2 need driver 570 or newer. These requirements can change, so verify the current documentation for your exact card rather than relying on a broad brand-level assumption.
3. Verify the operating system and backend
The same model can behave differently in llama.cpp, Ollama, NIM, or another runtime. Confirm that your operating system and selected backend support the GPU. Ollama also documents supported AMD GPU families through ROCm with platform and driver conditions; AMD users should check that current matrix for the exact family instead of copying NVIDIA requirements.
4. Select the model variant, not only the model name
Write down the quantization and file format before estimating memory. “Qwen 3.5 4B” is a model family label; it does not identify one unique file size or quality level.
5. Set a realistic context
Start below the maximum advertised context, confirm stable generation, and raise it only when your workload requires it. Long-context experiments should be treated as a separate memory test.

- Update the driver and confirm hardware detection. Use the current support page for your GPU family, operating system, and backend.
- Install one inference runtime. Do not compare model memory use across different runtimes until you understand each runtime’s defaults.
- Begin with Qwen 3.5 4B. Select a documented quantized variant and a moderate context.
- Observe memory during a real generation. Loading alone does not reveal the cache and temporary allocations used after several turns.
- Run a fixed prompt set. Include chat, coding, and document questions that reflect your work.
- Change one variable at a time. Try a different quantization or context only after recording the baseline.
- Test Qwen 3.5 9B only if needed. Treat the 8–16GB tier as a boundary to investigate, not a guarantee.
- Keep the configuration that is both accurate and stable. A smaller model with adequate context is often more useful than a larger model that repeatedly runs out of memory.
Common failure modes and fixes
The model will not load
The selected precision, quantization, context, or runtime buffers may exceed available VRAM. Move to a smaller or more aggressively quantized variant, lower context, and close other GPU applications. If the backend supports offloading, confirm where the layers are running and whether the resulting performance is acceptable.
Best Value
It loads, then fails during a long prompt
This usually indicates context-related memory growth rather than a weight-size problem. Reduce context, shorten the document, or process it in smaller sections. Do not conclude that a model fits merely because a short greeting succeeded.
Answers became noticeably worse after quantization
Lower precision can reduce quality. Compare the same prompts with a less aggressive quantization of the smaller model before moving to a larger model that leaves no headroom.
The GPU is unsupported or generation stays on the CPU
Recheck the exact GPU, compute capability, driver, operating system, and backend. A nominally compatible brand does not guarantee support for every generation. Follow the runtime’s current hardware matrix and inspect its startup information to verify acceleration.
Performance varies between guides
Token speed depends on GPU architecture, driver, quantization, context, batch settings, backend, and whether any layers are offloaded. Without a controlled benchmark on the same system, use those figures only as anecdotal context, not as a buying or model-selection rule.
Decision guide
| Your priority | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Most dependable fit on an 8GB RTX card | Qwen 3.5 4B | It is NVIDIA’s directly matched 6–8GB starting recommendation. |
| More capability and willingness to tune | Qwen 3.5 9B in a suitable quantization | It appears in NVIDIA’s 8–16GB tier, but the 8GB boundary requires testing. |
| NIM-specific deployment | Llama 3.1 8B only after checking the NIM requirements | The published fp8 minimum is 8GB, while bf16 requires 16GB minimum; these figures are NIM-specific. |
| Long documents | The model that leaves context headroom | Context memory can determine practical fit even when the weights load. |
| Best results for a particular job | The candidate that wins your fixed prompt test | Model quality is task-dependent, and no universal 8GB benchmark winner is established. |
Bottom line
For most owners of an 8GB graphics card, Qwen 3.5 4B is the safest first choice because it is the only option here directly matched to NVIDIA’s 6–8GB recommendation. Try Qwen 3.5 9B when you can tune quantization and context and are prepared for an uncertain fit. Whichever model you choose, verify the exact hardware and driver, reserve memory for context and runtime overhead, and select the configuration that performs well on your own prompts rather than the one with the largest parameter count.
