For a Linux-hosted video playlist sent directly to YouTube Live, Liquidsoap is the clearest fit: its project homepage documents a workflow that can use a playlist as a fallback, encode with FFmpeg, and send the stream to YouTube over RTMP. If you want a browser-based media library and radio-style scheduling, AzuraCast is easier to administer—but its documented output is centered on an Icecast-KH radio frontend, so YouTube video output takes additional configuration.
These tools solve different parts of the job. A playlist manager controls what plays and when; an encoder sends audio and video to YouTube; and a Linux host, network connection, media files, and YouTube live session all have to keep working for a continuous broadcast.

Which Linux option fits your YouTube stream?
| Option | Best fit | Playlist and scheduling workflow | YouTube path | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | People who want an always-on YouTube stream without keeping a Linux computer running | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and start the stream. It loops from the cloud. | Cloud service for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube; it is not a Linux playlist manager. | Less hands-on control over a self-hosted Linux pipeline. One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the first day is free with no card. |
| Liquidsoap | Linux operators comfortable writing and maintaining configuration who need a configurable video-to-YouTube pipeline | Scripted playlists, directories, scheduled sources, fallbacks, mixing, and transitions. | The official project homepage demonstrates a playlist fallback, FFmpeg encoding, and RTMP output to YouTube Live. | No graphical playlist interface; scripts are written by hand. |
| AzuraCast | Operators who want browser-based station and media administration, especially for radio-style streaming | Web media manager with general rotation, recurring playlists, scheduled time blocks, and date ranges. | Its documented stack is AutoDJ plus an Icecast-KH radio frontend; YouTube video output requires extra configuration or another encoder workflow. | Friendlier playlist administration, but not documented as a one-click YouTube video playlist service. |
The software comparison is about documented workflows, not measured reliability or encoding speed. No independent benchmark establishes that one of these tools streams with better uptime or performance.
Liquidsoap: the direct route from a Linux playlist to YouTube
What it does
Liquidsoap is a configurable streaming engine rather than a graphical playlist manager. The project homepage demonstrates combining a live OBS video input with a playlist fallback, encoding through FFmpeg, and sending the result to YouTube Live over RTMP. That makes it the most direct documented choice here when the destination is YouTube video and you are comfortable working in configuration files.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Plan the pipeline
- Prepare the media. Organize the video clips you want to play and decide what should happen if the main playlist or a live input is unavailable. A fallback only helps if its source is also accessible and usable.
- Define the playlist and sources in Liquidsoap. Configure the playlist, any live OBS input, and the fallback behavior in the script. Liquidsoap’s flexibility comes with a scripting and maintenance burden; it does not provide the same point-and-click playlist workflow as AzuraCast.
- Choose the video and audio encoding path. The documented example uses FFmpeg encoding. Select settings appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current encoder requirements, then verify the output before relying on it for a long broadcast.
- Configure YouTube Live as the RTMP destination. Use the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live-stream setup in your encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script repository, or expose it in logs. The Liquidsoap example uses a placeholder key, not a usable credential.
- Connect and check YouTube Live Control Room. Start the encoder and confirm YouTube receives the stream. Scheduling an event in YouTube Studio is separate from starting the encoder: the scheduled event announces an upcoming stream, but the encoder still has to connect and send content.
- Monitor and test recovery. Test the playlist, fallback, host, network, and YouTube session before treating the setup as continuous. Neither a script nor a playlist manager guarantees uninterrupted service.
When Liquidsoap is the right choice
Choose it when direct YouTube video output and custom source/fallback logic matter more than a graphical interface. If you want to administer a radio station through a browser and YouTube is not the required output, AzuraCast is a more natural fit.
AzuraCast: easier station scheduling, with a YouTube caveat
Set up a radio-style library and schedule
- Add media to the library. Upload the audio or video files you intend to use. AzuraCast’s media guidance says files must be assigned to at least one playlist to be played automatically; unassigned files will not enter playback on their own.
- Create and assign playlists. Use the web interface to manage rotation and playlist scheduling, including recurring playlists, scheduled time blocks, and date ranges.
- Set up AutoDJ for station playback. AzuraCast’s AutoDJ is built on Liquidsoap and supports continuous station operation. Its documented normal output is a web-radio stack with an Icecast-KH frontend.
- Plan the YouTube video output separately. The reviewed AzuraCast documentation does not present YouTube Live as a ready-made destination for video playlists. Expect to add Liquidsoap configuration or use another encoder workflow, and separately configure YouTube’s stream URL and key.
When AzuraCast is the right choice
Choose it for browser-based media and schedule management, particularly when the goal is an internet-radio station. If the main requirement is a video playlist sent directly to YouTube Live, its station interface does not remove the need to design and maintain the video-to-YouTube path.

What a 24/7 YouTube setup still depends on
- A host that stays available: self-hosting means maintaining the Linux machine or VPS, its storage, and the software running the stream.
- A stable network and working encoder: a playlist manager cannot prevent a network outage, encoder failure, or host restart from interrupting delivery.
- Valid media and a fallback: check that playlist files are readable and that a fallback source is configured for the failures it is meant to cover.
- A live YouTube connection: keep the stream key private and verify the incoming feed in Live Control Room. An event scheduled in Studio does not itself start the encoder.
- Separate archive planning: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream will produce a complete archive; arrange separate recordings if preserving the full long-running broadcast matters.
- Rights and platform-policy checks: having a file in a playlist does not establish permission to stream it. Confirm you have the necessary rights for every video and its audio, and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules before broadcasting.
Costs and operational trade-offs
Liquidsoap and AzuraCast are self-hosted software choices, so the software comparison is only part of the operating cost. A Linux VPS may be relevant; compare compute suitable for encoding, storage, bandwidth or transfer limits, backup arrangements, and restart or recovery options. No provider pricing or performance comparison is established here.

Remote storage is optional, but a second copy of important media can help with recovery. Keep a separate backup of station media rather than treating the live library as its own backup.
