There is no single best Linux malware scanner. For a home desktop, a free on-demand scanner such as ClamAV is usually enough for checking downloads and files you pass to Windows or macOS users. For a business endpoint or a file server, you want a centrally managed product, and the commercial options worth comparing are ESET Endpoint Antivirus for Linux, Bitdefender GravityZone, Avast Business Antivirus for Linux and Sophos Intercept X for Server. The evidence reviewed does not establish that every home Linux desktop needs paid antivirus.
Readers often ask “best antivirus for Mint?” or whether anything other than ClamAV is worth using. The answer depends on what you are protecting, so this guide sorts the options by use case.

Pick by use case first
| Your situation | What fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Personal desktop, occasional download or USB scans | ClamAV (on demand) | Free, open source, command-line scanner with a signature updater |
| Desktop or server that receives shared files or mail | ClamAV with its daemon, optionally ClamOnAcc | Designed for mail-gateway scanning; supports on-access scanning on modern Linux |
| Managed business endpoints | ESET Endpoint Antivirus for Linux, or Bitdefender GravityZone | Central management, on-access and scheduled scanning |
| Samba or NFS file server | Avast Business Antivirus for Linux (File Server Shield), or ClamAV on a budget | Scans files written to monitored mount points |
| Servers needing behavioral analysis | Sophos Intercept X for Server | Behavioral features, quote-based pricing |
A scanner does not replace system updates, installing software from trusted repositories, backups or sound administration. It adds a check on files; it does not fix a badly maintained system.

Cisco’s ClamAV documentation describes it as an open-source (GPLv2) anti-virus toolkit. It ships a multi-threaded daemon, a command-line scanner, an updater and a shared-library engine. The project is blunt about its scope: “ClamAV is not a traditional anti-virus or endpoint security suite.”

What it does well
- It was designed especially for email scanning on mail gateways.
- It scans archives and compressed formats, office formats, Windows PE executables, and ELF and Mach-O binaries.
- ClamOnAcc, the Linux on-access client for the ClamD daemon, can scan files as they are accessed and optionally block access until the scan finishes.
Limits to know
- The project says it cannot guarantee coverage of every evolving file format or every packing and obfuscation variant.
- It has no central management console, so it suits single machines or setups you script yourself.
Distribution support
Cisco’s list of regularly tested platforms currently includes Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04, Debian 13 and 12, AlmaLinux 10 and 9, Fedora 42 and 41, Alpine 3.22 and openSUSE Leap 15. Architectures and exceptions are on the documentation page. Mint users on an Ubuntu-based release will usually install it from the distribution’s packages. Check that list against your release, because it changes.
ESET Endpoint Antivirus for Linux
ESET’s 13.0 online help documents both on-demand and on-access scanning. On-demand scans can be started from a terminal, from ESET PROTECT or ESET PROTECT On-Prem, or scheduled with a tool such as cron. On-access scanning runs when file-system objects are accessed. That mix of local control and central console makes it a natural choice for organizations already using ESET elsewhere. Check ESET’s system requirements for your exact distribution and version.

Avoid the legacy desktop product
ESET states that “ESET NOD32 ANTIVIRUS FOR LINUX DESKTOP is no longer in limited support and currently receives no support since 3rd August 2022.” The page still appears online, but the product is unsupported. ESET directs business users to Endpoint Antivirus for Linux, or to ESET PROTECT Entry. Don’t install NOD32 for Linux Desktop from old download links.

Security.org’s Linux antivirus comparison, last updated May 19, 2026, says it tested nine products on an Ubuntu machine for about two weeks each. It credits Brett Cruz and Gene Petrino, and claims more than 1,500 research hours. Those figures are the publisher’s own claims, not an independent audit. Its results come from one reviewer’s setup and shouldn’t be read as detection rates for all malware. I found no directly comparable independent detection-rate data across these products.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose
- Define the environment. A personal laptop that occasionally scans downloads is a different job from protecting business endpoints or a server that accepts uploads.
- Check distro and version support in the vendor’s current requirements before buying.
- Decide between on-demand and on-access. On-demand is enough for spot checks. On-access suits shared folders and servers, but adds load.
- Decide whether you need central management. Several machines usually justify ESET PROTECT, GravityZone or similar. One machine does not.
- Check the administration style. Bitdefender’s Linux agent and Avast’s product are command-line driven, which is fine for admins but awkward if you expect a desktop app.
- Compare total yearly cost at your device count, not the entry price.
For a home desktop, ClamAV’s answer to “is it enough?” is generally yes for file checking, provided you understand it is a scanner toolkit rather than a full endpoint suite. If you manage other people’s machines or a shared server, step up to a managed product.
